Adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) and Pb(II) by starch biochar co-modified with plant extract and chitosan.

To investigate the adsorption mechanisms of heavy metal ions by starch (S)-based materials, S biochar (SB) was prepared by anaerobic calcination of S at 400 °C for 2 h. Plant extract (E) and chitosan (C) were subsequently used for single and combined modifications of SB, yielding E-modified SB (E-SB) and E/C co-modified SB (E/C-SB), respectively. The morphological features of E-SB and E/C-SB were characterized using multiple analytical techniques. Thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption were evaluated through batch experiments, examining the effects of temperature,

Exogenous Eugenol Alleviates Salt Stress in Tobacco Seedlings by Regulating the Antioxidant System and Hormone Signaling.

Salt stress seriously affects crop growth, leading to a decline in crop quality and yield. Application of exogenous substances to improve the salt tolerance of crops and promote their growth under salt stress has become a widespread and effective means. Eugenol is a small molecule of plant origin with medicinal properties such as antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. In this study, tobacco seedlings were placed in Hoagland's solution containing NaCl in the presence or absence of eugenol, and physiological indices related to stress tolerance were measured along with transcriptom

Molecular regulation by H2S of antioxidant and glucose metabolism in cold-sensitive Capsicum.

BACKGROUND: Cold is an important environmental limiting factor affecting plant yield and quality. Capsicum (chili pepper), a tropical and subtropical vegetable crop, is extremely sensitive to cold. Although H2S is an important signaling regulator in the responses of plant growth and development to abiotic stress, few studies have examined its effects on cold-sensitive capsicum varieties. Through biotechnology methods to enhance the cold resistance of peppers, to provide some reference for pepper breeding, investigated molecular regulation by H2S of responses to cold stress in cold-sensitive ca

Retracted: Influence of volume replacement with different HES-solutions on microcirculatory blood flow in cardiac surgery.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A variety of hydroxyethyl starch HES preparations with different molecular weight average (Mw) and molar substitution (MS) is available for volume replacement during acute normovolemic haemodilution (ANH). Particularly with regard to microcirculation, the ideal solution for volume therapy has not been found. The influence of four different HES preparations on macro- and microcirculation was investigated in 40 patients scheduled for elective aorto-coronary bypass grafting and undergoing ANH (preoperative withdrawn blood: 10 ml.kg-1): 1) 6% HES with Mw of 450,000 dalton and MS of 0.7; 2) 6% HES

[Colloidal hypertonic solutions in cardiac surgery].

The ideal solution for volume therapy is still under discussion. In cardiac surgery, hemodynamic efficacy as well as the influence of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are of major interest when administering volume. Hypertonic sodium (HS) solutions which have been advocated for resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock may also be of benefit in cardiac surgery patients. Hypertonic saline solution (7.5%) prepared in 6% hydroxyethyl starch solution (HS-HES) were infused in patients undergoing aortocoronary bypass grafting to double reduced baseline pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP < 4 mmHg). Physiological-Biochemical Characteristics and Omics Landscape of Drought Tolerance in Chlorella sp. from the Taklamakan Desert of China.

Microalgae endemic to desert ecosystems possess exceptional stress-resistance traits; however, the physiological and molecular drought-adaptation mechanisms of desert-dwelling Chlorella remain largely uncharacterized. Herein, we combined physiological-biochemical assays, ultrastructural observation, transcriptomics and metabolomics to dissect drought responses in Taklamakan-desert-origin Chlorella sp. under polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000)-simulated mild (10%), moderate (20%), and severe (30%) drought stress, with mechanistic focus on moderate-drought conditions. Moderate drought repressed

ABA-cytokinin crosstalk regulate drought tolerance in Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa through the phenylpropanoid pathway: insights from physiological and multi-omics integration.

Drought stress is a major constraint in jujube production. Although abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin exert opposing effects on plant growth, recent findings revealed that their combined application enhanced drought tolerance in jujube; however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this study, three exogenous treatments were applied to sour jujube seedlings under drought stress: 5 mg L-1 ABA, a cytokinin mixture of 50 mg L-1 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 100 mg L-1 kinetin (KT), and a combined ABA and cytokinins solution. Research Progress in Chitin/Chitosan-Based Biomass Adhesives: Extraction Processes, Composite and Chemical Modification.

Traditional fossil-based adhesives, hindered by issues such as formaldehyde emission, dependence on fossil resources, and poor biodegradability, struggle to meet the global demand for low-carbon green development. Biomass-based adhesives have thus emerged as a core alternative. Among them, chitin/chitosan derived from biomass waste such as shrimp and crab shells demonstrates significant potential in the adhesive field due to its renewability, controllable structure, biocompatibility, and inherent antibacterial properties. However, mainstream biomass adhesives like soy protein and starch adhesi

Chitosan-coated and sodium phytate-crosslinked porous starch microspheres for oral delivery of celastrol in colitis therapy.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis (UC), imposes a growing clinical burden worldwide. Celastrol (Cel), a potent anti-inflammatory triterpenoid, holds considerable promise for UC treatment but is severely constrained by its poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability. Porous starch (PS) offers an attractive drug reservoir for oral delivery yet suffers from low drug loading capacity and structural instability. To address these limitations, we constructed a C-Sp-PS/Cel microsphere delivery system by modifying enzymatic hydrolyzed PS via sodium phytate (Sp) cr

Engineering frog-skin-inspired wrinkled self-lubricative liquid-like interfaces on biodegradable plastics.

HYPOTHESIS: Colloid and interface science increasingly seeks strategies to control liquid-solid interactions through surface engineering and lubricant confinement. Biomimetic surfaces with designed lubricant-confined patterns and ultra-low adhesion to sticky fluids have garnered increased attention due to their broad applicability across numerous engineering fields. Although technologies for manufacturing silicone-based coatings are well established, the fabrication of fluorine-free slippery coatings that offer robust oil-storing capability without complex micro-texturing remains challenging.

Mutation of TaNRAMP5 impacts cadmium transport in wheat.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution significantly impacts the normal growth, development, and food safety of wheat. Employing modern molecular biology techniques represents an effective strategy for cultivating low-Cd wheat. Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein 5 (NRAMP5) is a critical heavy metal transporter, however, its function in wheat, particularly in response to Cd stress, remains largely unexplored. Here, we employed the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to generate TaNRAMP5 knockout lines (KO). Cd content in wheat was detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

The hepatic-targeted, resveratrol loaded nanoparticles for relief of high fat diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the early stage of many metabolic syndromes. The intervention of NAFLD can prevent its further development into severe metabolic syndromes. Given the inefficiency and side effects of chemical drugs for treating NAFLD, the hepatic-targeted nanocarriers loaded with bioactive compounds may offer a more effective and acceptable strategy for eliminating NAFLD. Here we developed hepatic-targeted oxidized starch-lysozyme (OSL) nanocarriers to specifically deliver resveratrol (Res) to liver tissue in order to maximize its therapeutic efficiency. The hepatic

Multi-residue method for the detection of veterinary drugs in distillers grains by liquid chromatography-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry.

Distillers Grain (DG) is an important by-product of ethanol production. The ethanol production process uses only the starch portion of the plant and all the remaining nutrients, protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins remain in DGs, a valuable feed material for livestock. The use of antimicrobial drugs is helpful to limit harmful bacterial growth during the early part of the fermentation process. This can lead to the possible presence of contaminants in the by-products that are used in the food and feed industries, resulting in a major concern for the development of bacterial resistance in both h

Colonic health: fermentation and short chain fatty acids.

Interest has been recently rekindled in short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with the emergence of prebiotics and probiotics aimed at improving colonic and systemic health. Dietary carbohydrates, specifically resistant starches and dietary fiber, are substrates for fermentation that produce SCFAs, primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate, as end products. The rate and amount of SCFA production depends on the species and amounts of microflora present in the colon, the substrate source and gut transit time. SCFAs are readily absorbed. Butyrate is the major energy source for colonocytes. Propionate

Assessment of fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated cardiac surgical patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate assessment of preload responsiveness is an important goal of the clinician to avoid deleterious volume replacement associated with increased morbidity and mortality in mechanically ventilated patients. This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of simultaneously assessed stroke volume variation and pulse pressure variation using an improved algorithm for pulse contour analysis (PiCCO plus, V 5.2.2), compared to the respiratory changes in transoesophageal echo-derived aortic blood velocity (deltaVpeak), intrathoracic blood volume index, central venous pr

Hydroxyethyl starch produces attenuation of circulatory shock and cerebral ischemia during heatstroke.

We hypothesized that hydroxyethyl starch (HES), which maintains colloid osmotic pressure and potentially "seals" capillary leaks, would ameliorate circulatory shock and cerebral ischemia during heatstroke in a rat model. Animals under urethane anesthesia were exposed to high ambient temperature (Ta) of 42 degrees C until mean arterial pressure and local cerebral blood flow in the striatum began to decrease from peak level, which was arbitrarily defined as the onset of heatstroke. Control rats were exposed to 24 degrees C. In rats treated with 1 mL/kg, 11 mL/kg, or 22 mL/kg of normal saline (NS

Comparative genomic and phenotypic analysis of potential beneficial properties of Bifidobacterium adolescentis.

Certain strains of Bifidobacterium adolescentis inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract have been shown to possess properties that are purported to improve host health. However, given the genetic and phenotypic diversity that has been reported among B. adolescentis strains, it is unclear if and to what extent these traits are conserved across the species. Accordingly, we examined potentially beneficial properties using a combination of genomic and in vitro approaches. Phylogeny inferred from core genomes of 148 B. adolescentis isolates revealed five major lineages. At the functional genomic leve
