Biofilm forming capacity and antibiotic susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. with the icaA/icaD/bap genotype isolated from ocular surface of patients with diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Bacterial biofilm is an exopolysaccharide matrix that is produced by bacteria while they adhere on abiotic or biotic surfaces. The bacteria living in this matrix are more resistant to antibiotics than planctonic bacteria. The biofilm formation property of the bacteria is determined by genes; and this is related to virulence of the microorganism. In ophthalmology, biofilms form especially on abiotic surfaces such as silicon tubes, contact lenses, intraocular lenses etc. AIM: Our aim was to investigate genotypic and phenotypic structures of biofilms that are produced by Staphyloco

Diversity of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi strains collected from india using variable number tandem repeat (VNTR)-PCR analysis.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is endemic in India, and a seasonal increase of cases is observed annually. In spite of effective therapies and the availability of vaccines, morbidity is widespread owing to the circulation of multiple genetic variants, frequent migration of asymptomatic carriers, unhygienic food practices and the emergence of multidrug resistance and thus continues to be a major public health problem in developing countries, particularly in India. Classical methods of strain typing such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, ribotyping, random amplification of polymorphic DNA and ampl

Characteristics of pathogens causing urinary tract infections in hospitals in North America: results from the SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program, 1997.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common and involves pathogens with changing susceptibility patterns. The SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program evaluates international pathogen incidence patterns to detect and manage the emergence of resistant strains. We describe the antimicrobial resistance patterns among 1617 pathogens recovered from UTIs during the third-quarter of 1997 in North America (United States and Canada), as part of this worldwide program. The isolates were tested against more than 50 antimicrobial agents (20 reported) by reference broth microdilution methods, and selected iso

Dogs are carriers of Clostridioides difficile lineages associated with human community-acquired infections.

There is an increasing concern about the role of animals as reservoirs of Clostridioides difficile. In this study, we investigated prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic potential of C. difficile in dogs. Two-hundred and twenty-five dog faecal deposits were collected from trashcans in nine public gardens. C. difficile was isolated using selective plating and enrichment culture, identified by MALDI-TOF, tested for susceptibility to seven antibiotics by E-test, and sequenced on an Illumina NextSeq platform. Genome sequences were analysed to determine multilocus sequence types and resi

Effect of fluoroquinolone resistance mutation Thr-82→Ile on Clostridioides difficile fitness.

OBJECTIVES: Fluoroquinolone resistance is common among epidemic Clostridioides difficile PCR ribotype (RT) 027 and may have contributed to outbreaks of C. difficile infection (CDI). We investigated the impact of fluoroquinolone mutations on the bacterial fitness (BF) of C. difficile RT027 isolates. METHODS: The BF of seven RT027 mutants with reduced susceptibility to moxifloxacin (moxifloxacin MIC 4-32 mg/L) was compared with their susceptible (moxifloxacin MIC 1-2 mg/L) progenitor strains in competitive batch culture (CBC), cell cytotoxicity and maximal growth rate assays. Barriers to implementing infection prevention and control guidelines during crises: experiences of health care professionals.

BACKGROUND: Communicable disease crises can endanger the health care system and often require special guidelines. Understanding reasons for nonadherence to crisis guidelines is needed to improve crisis management. We identified and measured barriers and conditions for optimal adherence as perceived by 4 categories of health care professionals. METHODS: In-depth interviews were performed (n = 26) to develop a questionnaire for a cross-sectional survey of microbiologists (100% response), infection preventionists (74% response), public health physicians (96% response), and public health nurses (

Evaluation of a multivalent Pasteurella haemolytica vaccine in bighorn sheep: protection from experimental challenge.

The efficacy of a multivalent Pasteurella haemolytica vaccine (A1, A2, T10) in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) was examined. Fifteen captive bighorns were divided equally into three treatment groups based on vaccination status: control (no vaccination), one dose 10 days prior to challenge, or one or two doses 57 wk prior to challenge. At challenge, each bighorn received about 6.2 x 10(7) colony forming units of P. haemolytica (biotype T, serotype 10, biogroup 4-CDS; ribotype ECO; "Alamosa Canyon" strain) suspension sp

Heart failure-induced microbial dysbiosis contributes to colonic tumour formation in mice.

AIMS: Heart failure (HF) and cancer are the leading causes of death worldwide. Epidemiological studies revealed that HF patients are prone to develop cancer. Preclinical studies provided some insights into this connection, but the exact mechanisms remain elusive. In colorectal cancer (CRC), gut microbial dysbiosis is linked to cancer progression and recent studies have shown that HF patients display microbial dysbiosis. This current study focussed on the effects of HF-induced microbial dysbiosis on colonic tumour formation. METHODS AND RESULTS: C57BL/6J mice were subjected to myocardial infar

Increased serum resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases.

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between serum resistance, O serotypes, and the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Klebsiella pneumoniae. Ninety ESBL-producing and 178 non-ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae isolates gathered in five European countries were O serotyped and tested for sensitivity to the serum's bactericidal effect. The frequency of serum-resistant isolates was higher among ESBL-producing strains (30%; 27/90 isolates) than among non-ESBL-producing strains (17.9%; 32/178 isolates) (P = 0.037; odds ratio [OR] = 1.96; 95% confi

Induced Sputum Microbial Diversity and Function Changes in Patients with Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease by Metagenomic Sequencing: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: The underlying pathogenesis of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is closely related to airway microbiota dysregulation. Currently, there is a lack of systematic elaboration based on deep metagenomic sequencing regarding the species-level and functional characteristics of the microbiota during AECOPD, as well as its correlation with clinical phenotypes of the host. This study aims to systematically analyze the taxonomic composition and functional profile changes of the microbiota in induced sputum samples from COPD patients during the stable and acute

Gut bacteria associated with an atherogenic TMAO-dietary pattern and choline-rich foods among aging women.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Choline can be metabolized by gut bacteria with a choline utilization gene, CutC, as identified through genome sequencing studies. This metabolism produces trimethylamine, the precursor to the atherosclerotic metabolite trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). Bacterial species involved in trimethylamine production in free-living humans have been under-investigated. We previously developed the TMAO dietary pattern (TMAO-DP), which is predictive of plasma TMAO and choline. We evaluated associations between the TMAO-DP, dietary choline, and choline-rich foods (fish, red meat, eggs) wi

The seventh pandemic of cholera in Europe revisited by microbial genomics.

In 1970, the seventh pandemic of cholera (7 P) reached both Africa and Europe. Between 1970 and 2011, several European countries reported cholera outbreaks of a few to more than 2,000 cases. We report here a whole-genome analysis of 1,324 7 P V. cholerae El Tor (7 PET) isolates, including 172 from autochthonous sporadic or outbreak cholera cases occurring between 1970 and 2011 in Europe, providing insight into the spatial and temporal spread of this pathogen across Europe. In this work, we show that the 7 PET lineage was introduced at least eight times into two main regions: Eastern and Southe

Microbiota according to gastric topography in patients with low or high risk of gastric cancer in Nariño, Colombia.

Introduction: Inflammation in the gastric antrum caused by Helicobacter pylori increases the risk of duodenal ulcer while inflammation in the body generates atrophic gastritis and increased risk of gastric cancer. These inflammatory responses according to gastric topography could be explained by the composition of the gastric microbiota associated with H. pylori. Objective: To identify and compare the microbiota of the gastric antrum and body of individuals from two populations, one with high risk and one with low risk of gastric cancer from Nariño, Colombia. Materials and methods: Biopsies of

Molecular and phylogenetic status of Fasciola sp., of cattle in Qena, Upper Egypt.

The species of liver fluke of the genus Fasciola (phylum platyhelminthes, order Digenea, Family Fasciolidae) are obligatory parasites that inhabit the large biliary ducts of herbivore animals as well as man. Reports on the species of Fasciola present in the Nile Delta, Egypt, appear controversial. In the current study a precise identification of Fasciola isolates from cattle in Qena province, Upper Egypt was done based on examination of the second Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS2) and the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI).
