Vehicles are rapidly evolving into objects of intelligent interconnection. Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications enable the interconnection between vehicles, while also leading to new electromagnetic exposure scenarios. This paper integrates a monopole array antenna into a shark-fin antenna on the car roof for V2V communications and evaluates the specific absorption rate (SAR) and temperature rise of a human body in a smart mobility communication scenario operating at 5.9 GHz. The V2V antenna is modeled and placed on a 3D vehicle model using COMSOL Multiphysics (v.6.2) to numerically estimat

High Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometers (HiKE-IMS) are usually operated at absolute pressures around 20 mbar in order to reach high reduced electric field strengths of up to 120 Td for influencing reaction kinetics in the reaction region. Such operating points significantly increase the linear range and limit chemical cross sensitivities. Furthermore, HiKE-IMS enables ionization of compounds normally not detectable in ambient pressure IMS, such as benzene, due to additional reaction pathways and fewer clustering reactions. However, operation at higher pressures promises increased sensit

A method for measurement of antiepileptic drug concentrations based on Raman spectroscopy and an optimization algorithm for mathematical models are proposed and investigated. This study uses Raman spectroscopy to measure mixed antiepileptic drugs, and an Improved Snake Optimization (ISO)-Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm is proposed. Raman spectroscopy is widely used in the identification of pharmaceutical ingredients due to its sharp peaks, no pre-treatment of samples and non-destructive detection. To analyze the spectral data precisely, a machine learning method is used in this pa

Dextrocardia is a rare congenital malformation in humans in which most of the heart mass is positioned in the right hemithorax rather than on the left. The heart itself may be normal and dextrocardia is sometimes diagnosed during non-related explorations. A few reports have documented atypical positions of the cardiac chambers in farmed teleost fish. Here, we report the casual finding of a left-right mirrored heart in an 85 cm long wild-caught spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) with several organ malformations. Macroscopic observations showed an outflow tract originating from the left side of t

OBJECTIVE: To prepare a nanobody specific to dectin 1 and verify its specificity and anti-inflammatory effects on Aspergillus fumigatus keratitis.
METHODS: The nanobody was selected from a high-quality shark-antibody library constructed with phage-display technology. The nanobody was developed in the expression systems of Escherichia coli. Indirect ELISA was used to determine the specificity of the nanobody to recombinant dectin 1 protein. The potential of the nanobody to be recognized and expressed on the surfaces of cells and corneas was detected by immunofluorescence, and its anti-inflamma

PURPOSE: An extensive literature has postulated multiple etiologies for aqueductal stenosis. No publications were found, discussing that evolutionary modifications might explain aqueductal anomalies. This study's objectives were to review the evolutionary modifications of vertebrates' tectum structures that might explain human aqueduct anomalies. Undertaking vertebrate comparative study is currently not feasible in view of limitations in obtaining vertebrate material. Thus, vertebrate material collected, injected, dissected, and radiographed in the early 1970s was analyzed, focusing on the aqu

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects 257 million people globally. Current therapies suppress HBV but viral rebound occurs on cessation of therapy; novel therapeutic strategies are urgently required. To develop a therapeutic HBV vaccine that can induce high magnitude T cells to all major HBV antigens, we have developed a novel HBV vaccine using chimpanzee adenovirus (ChAd) and modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vectors encoding multiple HBV antigens. ChAd vaccine alone generated very high magnitude HBV specific T cell responses to all HBV major antigens. The inclusion of a shark

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) form an ancient family of innate immune receptors that detect microbial structures and activate the host immune response. Most subfamilies of TLRs (including TLR3, TLR5, and TLR7) are highly conserved among vertebrate species. In contrast, TLR15, a member of the TLR1 subfamily, appears to be unique to birds and reptiles. We investigated the functional evolution of TLR15. Phylogenetic and synteny analyses revealed putative TLR15 orthologs in bird species, several reptilian species and also in a shark species, pointing to an unprecedented date of origin of TLR15 as wel

To determine whether cholera toxin B subunit and active peptide from shark liver (CTB-APSL) fusion protein plays a role in treatment of type 2 diabetic mice, the CTB-APSL gene was cloned and expressed in silkworm (Bombyx mori) baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS), then the fusion protein was orally administrated at a dose of 100 mg/kg for five weeks in diabetic mice. The results demonstrated that the oral administration of CTB-APSL fusion protein can effectively reduce the levels of both fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (GHb), promote insulin secretion and improve

The olfactory system represents an excellent model for studying different aspects of the development of the nervous system ranging from neurogenesis to mechanisms of axon growth and guidance. Important findings in this field come from comparative studies. We have analyzed key events in the development of the olfactory system of the shark Scyliorhinus canicula by combining immunohistochemical and tract-tracing methods. We describe for the first time in a cartilaginous fish an early population of pioneer HuC/D-immunoreactive (ir) neurons that seemed to delaminate from the olfactory pit epitheliu

Recent studies indicate that elasmobranch fish respond differently to metal exposure than marine teleosts. Accumulation rates can be high, which despite the fact that normal background levels for metals in the marine environment are low, is worrying due to the long life span and late fecundity of most shark. The goals of the present study were to examine differences in accumulation rates and toxicity of a range of metals at equimolar concentrations (10microM) in the Mediterranean or spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula. For this purpose, we exposed the dogfish to Ni (587microg/L), Cd (1124mi

The monoclonal antibody 5HL-5D11-D10 to antigen D10 identifies a cell lineage that is restricted to certain tissues of the human foregut. We investigated the tissue distribution of antigen D10 in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish by immunohistochemical staining. Tissue from human and each of ten other mammalian species showed staining of gastric mucous neck cells and glands of the cardia and antrum, Brunner's glands, peribiliary glands and periductal glands of the pancreas. Six of the mammalian species also expressed antigen D10 in mucosa of the larger bronchi, and five expressed i

Squalene is a high-value unsaturated triterpene extensively used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and health products. Traditional extraction methods of squalene from shark oil are environmentally unfriendly, making it imperative to explore better production approaches. Microbial engineering for squalene production has drawn much attention due to its environmentally friendly nature, sustainability, and high efficiency. However, the capacity of squalene biosynthesis is still limited by many challenges, including insufficient precursor supply, metabolic flux competition, product toxicity, and extr

The family Lernaeopodidae includes 14 genera parasitizing elasmobranchs. Fourteen species of this family have been cited from Argentina, four of which were found on chondrichthyans. Schroederichthys bivius Mller and Henle and Galeorhinus galeus (Linnaeus) from Argentina harbored parasitic copepods of the genus Lernaeopoda. The objective of this study was to identify the species using an integrative approach. The morphology was examined by Optical Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy and the molecular analysis was based on partial sequences of the COI mtDNA gene. Despite differences in t

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder thought to be caused by accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) within the brain, autonomic nerves, and the enteric nervous system (ENS). Involvement of the ENS in PD often precedes the onset of the classic motor signs of PD by many years at a time when severe constipation represents a major morbidity. Studies conducted in vitro and in vivo, have shown that squalamine, a zwitterionic amphipathic aminosterol, originally isolated from the liver of the dogfish shark, effectively displaces membrane-bound α-syn.

Recent studies have implicated beta-hemolytic streptococci as opportunistic pathogens of marine mammals, including southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), but little is known about their prevalence or pathophysiology. Herein, we focus on risk factors for sea otter infection by a single beta-hemolytic streptococcal species, Streptococcus phocae. Streptococcus phocae was first identified as a marine mammal pathogen in 1994, and the first report in southern sea otters was in 2009. Its broad host range encompasses fish, pinnipeds, cetaceans, and mustelids, with S. phocae now recognized as an

INTRODUCTION: Blood vessel glycosylation at the fetomaternal interface of four near-term specimens of tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, has been examined at days 23-26 of the 26.5 day pregnancy and compared with that of other species.
METHODS: A panel of 23 lectins was used to compare vasculature in tammar with non-mammalian (shark, skink) and eutherian species at early and late gestation (camel, horse and alpaca), and term/near-term (cat, lion, dog, mink and elephant).
RESULTS: Strikingly low levels of all the glycans tested, apart from sialic acids, were found in capillary endothelium of b

The early development of teleost paired fins is strikingly similar to that of tetrapod limb buds and is controlled by similar mechanisms. One early morphological divergence between pectoral fins and limbs is in the fate of the apical ectodermal ridge (AER), the distal epidermis that rims the bud. Whereas the AER of tetrapods regresses after specification of the skeletal progenitors, the AER of teleost fishes forms a fold that elongates. Formation of the fin fold is accompanied by the synthesis of two rows of rigid, unmineralized fibrils called actinotrichia, which keep the fold straight and gu

Acid-soluble collagen (ASC) and pepsin solubilized collagen (PSC) isolated and purified from alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) bone were studied for molecular size, amino acid profile, secondary structure, and denaturation temperature by SDS-PAGE, HPLC, circular dichroism, and viscometry. Two collagen subunits, alpha1 and alpha2 were identified by SDS-PAGE. The molecular masses for alpha1 and alpha2 chains of ASC were 124 kDa and 111 kDa, respectively. The molecular masses were 123 kDa for alpha1 and 110 kDa for alpha2 chains of the PSC preparation. The molecular masses for ([alpha1](2) a

The effect of physicochemical stress on organic anion transport across the vertebrate blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier in the presence and absence of an endogenous cytoprotectant, trimethylamine oxide (TMAO), was investigated in isolated IVth choroid plexus (CP) of spiny dogfish shark (Squalus acanthias), an animal with naturally high levels of TMAO ( approximately 70 mmol l(-1)). Active transepithelial absorption of the organic anion, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), by IVth CP mounted in Ussing chambers was measured after in vitro stress, and a marker for the cellular stress re
