A Qualitative Assessment of an Electronic Health Record-Embedded Intervention to Increase In-Hospital Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Initiation.

BACKGROUND: In-hospital initiation of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) remains low despite their effectiveness to reduce opioid-related mortality. We implemented an in-hospital OUD intervention across 12 hospitals to increase OUD treatment provision. OBJECTIVE: Understand factors impacting adoption and implementation of a non-interruptive electronic health record-embedded intervention which provided OUD treatment guidance. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted focus groups and key informant interviews involving hospital-based physicians and advanced practice professionals (APPs), n

Welfare as a dynamic process: fast and slow adaptation in dairy cows following relocation to an enriched enclosure.

The positive welfare movement focuses on promoting rewarding experiences that enhance animals' quality of life beyond simply preventing negative states. Importantly, welfare is dynamic, and positive experiences can emerge on different timescales without necessarily translating into sustained improvements in overall well-being. Here, we introduce a time-aware, multidimensional approach to quantify how welfare-related measures evolve following relocation to an enriched, socially housed setting. We hypothesised that cows would show hedonic-treadmill-like habituation, in which an initial response

Effect of Legacy-Making on Anticipatory Grief and Coping Among Mothers of Children with Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: One of the complex and challenging parental experiences when facing a child's cancer is anticipatory grief. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of legacy-making on anticipatory grief and coping strategies among mothers of children with cancer. METHODS: This parallel-group randomized clinical trial was conducted among 70 mothers of hospitalized children with cancer. Participants were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. The intervention group participated in a structured legacy-making program consisting of five sessions, each lasting 60 to 90 minutes. Antici

Sport-based interventions for post-disaster mental health and psychosocial recovery: a multi-level systematic review and meta-analysis within the MHPSS framework.

Disasters and humanitarian crises affect both individual mental health and broader psychosocial functioning, but these outcome domains are not interchangeable. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined structured sport-, exercise-, play-, yoga/body-awareness-, physical-education-, and sport-for-protection-based interventions within a mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) framework. Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published from January 1, 2000, through November 1, 2025. Eligible populations wer

Patient and family-centered concerns in pediatric cardiac surgery: a Middle Eastern perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease affects approximately 1% of live births worldwide and remains among the most significant contributors to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of them require surgical or percutaneous interventions at some stage. Patient care involves critical situations including clinical, psychological, social, regional, and cultural practices. Family and patients go through stressful experiences. Through this review, we aim to highlight issues faced by the patients or their families during management of complex cardiac conditions and hope that medical pers

A prediction model for virologic failure in adolescents living with HIV in Uganda: Findings from the Suubi+Adherence study.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) have low viral suppression levels, with 1 in 3 ALHIV experiencing virologic failure, calling for more efforts to reverse these trends. We developed and validated a model that predicts the risk of virologic failure (VF) among ALHIV. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We used baseline data from 702 ALHIV enrolled in the Suubi + Adherence cluster-randomized clinical trial. Participants were aged 10-16 years, living with HIV and aware of their HIV status, and are living with a family. We developed a risk-prediction model for VF (viral lo

Quantifying intersectional stigma in HIV prevention contexts: adaptation and validation of a scale among female sex workers in Namibia.

BACKGROUND: Key populations disproportionately affected by HIV face stigma and discrimination related to their multiple, converging marginalized identities. Engaging these populations in HIV prevention services requires understanding intersectional stigma and its effects and addressing it through targeted programs. New approaches are needed to quantify intersectional stigma as a determinant of HIV and HIV prevention engagement among key populations, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where this is understudied. We applied an intersectional approach in adapting existing stigma measures with fe

Transitions to polysubstance use: Prospective cohort study of adolescents in Australia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adolescent polysubstance use has been associated with adverse social and health outcomes. Our aim was to measure rates and transitions to polysubstance use during adolescence and identify factors associated with initiation and discontinuation of polysubstance use. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. Multistate Markov modelling was used to estimate rates and identify correlates of transitions between substance use states. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Adolescent-parent dyads (n = 1927; adolescents in grade 7, age ≈13 years) were recruited from Australian schools during 2010/11

Contextual effects of community capacity as a predictor for adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use: A multi-level analysis.

Adolescent substance use is a major public health issue that can result in enduring physical, psychological, and social consequences. This study seeks to examine the relationship between community capacity for prevention and the 4-week prevalence rate of substance use, including tobacco, alcohol, other drugs, and binge-drinking, among students in Germany ranging from grades 5 to 11. This study employed a cross-sectional design and used baseline data from 28 communities participating in the CTC-EFF study. The sample consisted of 7210 students who were surveyed about their substance use behavior

Early life exposure to chronic unpredictable stress induces anxiety-like behaviors and increases the excitability of cerebellar neurons in zebrafish.

Anxiety is a common emotional disorder in children. To understand its underlying mechanisms, chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) has been established as a stress model in zebrafish. By using the tall tank test, the stress response reliability could be improved in adult fish which has not been confirmed in larvae. In addition, the increasing evidences have shown that cerebellum plays important roles in anxiety. Whether CUS will affect cerebellar neuronal activity remains unknown. We found that CUS exposure to larvae (from 10 to 17 days post fertilization) induced anxiety-like behaviors and socia

Determinants of mental health among youths and adolescents in the digital era: Roles of cyber and traditional bullying, violence, loneliness, and environment factors.

INTRODUCTION: Although the pathogenesis of depressive disorders is not fully elucidated, untreated adolescent depression can lead to serious sequelae such as impaired academic performance and social functioning, substance use disorders, poor self-esteem, and increased risk for suicidal ideation and attempts. Literature on adolescent mental health in Vietnam is limited, despite increased international awareness of this critical issue. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associations of depressive symptoms in Vietnamese adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional, self-administered s

Resilience among Cisgender and Transgender Women in Street-Based Sex Work in Baltimore, Maryland.

INTRODUCTION: Resilience represents adaptability and empowerment and can buffer against the consequences of traumatic events. Cisgender and transgender women in street-based sex work are at high risk for trauma, yet data on their resilience are sparse. A clearer understanding of resilience and its correlates is useful for informing sex worker-centered interventions. METHODS: Using the Connor-Davidson 10-item Resilience Scale (range, 0-40), we describe resilience among 165 cisgender and 42 transgender street-based women sex workers in Baltimore, Maryland. Longitudinal cohort data were used to

The Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire: the Italian version.

BACKGROUND: Resilience focuses on strength under stress, in the context of adversity. Walsh's theoretical model identifies relational processes that allow families to tackle and overcome critical situations, dividing them into three domains of family function. The aim of this study was to assess resilience in families of patients with a chronic disease by adapting and validating the Italian version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (Walsh-IT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: An Italian adult sample of 421 participants (patients and relatives) was collected with the aim to assess the reliabil

Towards a National Pediatric Musculoskeletal Trauma Outcomes Registry: the Pediatric Orthopaedic Trauma Outcomes Research Group (POTORG) experience.

This study is a pilot effort towards the broader implementation of a national pediatric musculoskeletal trauma outcomes registry. The primary goal of this project is to explore the feasibility of a web-based data acquisition and management platform and to identify catalysts and obstacles to multi-center collaboration. A prospective cohort of children presenting to the Pediatric Emergency Departments with ankle, femur, supracondylar humerus, tibial spine, or open fractures at five clinical centers between October 2001 and March 2003 comprised the study population. Patients were enrolled via the

Predictors of myocardial infarction over a span of 30 years in Roseto, Pennsylvania.

Predictors of myocardial infarction with or without survival were sought in a 30-year study of Roseto, Pennsylvania, a nearly exclusively Italian community of approximately 1,600, compared to the immediately adjacent town of Bangor with a population of approximately 5,000. At the start of the study the death rate from myocardial infarction among men in Roseto was less than half that in Bangor despite an equal prevalence of the usual risk factors, mainly smoking and diet. The communities were followed prospectively for 30 years during a striking social change in Roseto toward less family and co

Psychological Determinants of Conflict with the Law and Susceptibility to Rehabilitation in Relation to the Presence of Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Many prison-sentenced individuals exhibit symptoms of mental dysfunctions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The presence of co-occurring mental disorders further complicates their rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts. Given these challenges, understanding the role of specific disorders, such as ADHD, is critical for developing targeted interventions tailored to the needs of incarcerated individuals and improving their outcomes. This research aimed to clarify the relationships among hyperactivity, criminal behavior, and psychological f

Peer-learning and support among health policy and systems research actors in West Africa: a social network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health policy and systems research (HPSR) is vital for strengthening health systems, yet its development in West Africa remains constrained by limited capacity. To strengthen capacity, the West African Network of Emerging Leaders in Health Policy and Systems (WANEL) was created to foster peer learning and cross-country collaboration among early- and mid-career HPSR actors. This study used Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine WANEL's structure and functioning, with the aim of understanding how well the network supports its capacity and HPSR field-building goals. METHODS: A cros
