Background and Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrheae threatens the effectiveness of empirical gonorrhoea treatment. Although global surveillance evidence is increasingly available, resistance data are not consistently reported separately for men with urethral or urogenital infection. This review evaluated antibiotic-specific resistance in N. gonorrhoeae isolates from this clinically defined population and examined the geographic and reporting limitations of the available evidence. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and relevant WHO GASP

BACKGROUND: The emerging resistance to the extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae together with increasing incidence of gonorrhoea cases in many countries have been global public health concerns. However, in recent years the levels of ESC resistance have decreased in several regions worldwide. We describe the European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (Euro-GASP) data from 2013, and compare them to corresponding data from 2009-2012.
METHODS: During 2013, N. gonorrhoeae isolates from 21 participating countries were examined. Antimicrobial susceptibility

OBJECTIVES: In the mid-1990s, fluoroquinolones were introduced in Indonesia for the management of gonorrhea and are now part of the national recommended treatment guidelines. We recently documented introduction of ciprofloxacin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains in female sex workers (FSWs) in Timika, Indonesia, 5 years after treating gonococcal cervicitis with ciprofloxacin and periodically monitoring antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates. To assess the importance of this observation, we determined antimicrobial susceptibilities and strain types of N. gonorrhoeae isolates from FSWs se

The urease accessory protein encoded by ureE from Klebsiella aerogenes is proposed to deliver Ni(II) to the urease apoprotein during enzyme activation. Native UreE possesses a histidine-rich region at its carboxyl terminus that binds several equivalents of Ni(2+); however, a truncated form of this protein (H144*UreE) binds only 2 Ni(2+) per dimer and is functionally active (Brayman, T. G., and Hausinger, R. P. (1996) J. Bacteriol. 178, 5410-5416). The urease activation kinetics were studied in vivo by monitoring the development of urease activity upon adding Ni(2+) to spectinomycin-treated Esc

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the molecular epidemiology of isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from Saskatchewan, Canada, using Neisseria gonorrhoeae multi antigen sequence typing (NG-MAST), and to assess associations between antimicrobial susceptibility (AMS) and specific strain types (STs).
METHODS: 320 consecutive gonococcal isolates, collected between 2003 and 2008, were typed by NG-MAST. STs were grouped if one of their alleles was common and the other differed by ≤1% in DNA sequence. AMS was determined by agar dilution (CLSI) to seven antibiotics.
RESULTS: N gonorrhoeae isolates were resol

In veterinary medicine, the obligate intracellular bacteria Chlamydia (C.) abortus, Chlamydia caviae, and Chlamydia pecorum are known to cause ovine enzootic abortion, conjunctivitis in guinea pigs, and ocular/urogenital disease in koalas, respectively. Studying the biology of these bacteria has been challenging due to a dearth of genetic tools. This study aimed to establish stable transformation systems for C. abortus, C. pecorum, and C. caviae by introducing shuttle vectors carrying green fluorescent proteins. With the aim to select the most suitable green fluorescent protein for the trackin

The composition of the bacterial flora in the calf nasopharynx might influence the risk of bovine respiratory disease (BRD). The aims of the present study were, firstly, to investigate the prevalence of bacteria potentially involved in BRD in the nasopharynx of veal calves and to identify associated risk factors for their presence, and, secondly, to provide data on antimicrobial resistance levels in these bacteria. Deep nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from veal calves on 12 Swiss farms over a period of one year by non-random, but systematic sampling for isolation of Pasteurellaceae and Myc

The Gram-negative bacterium Cupriavidus gilardii is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen found in many environments. However, little is known about this species or its antibiotic resistance mechanisms. We used biochemical tests, antibiotic susceptibility experiments, and whole-genome sequencing to characterize an environmental C. gilardii isolate. Like clinical isolates, this isolate was resistant to meropenem, gentamicin, and other antibiotics. Resistance to these antibiotics appeared to be related to the large number of intrinsic antibiotic resistance genes found in this isolate. As dete

The use of prophylactic antibiotics in veterinary surgery reduces the occurrence of postoperative complications. In order to limit the development of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and to maximize therapy efficacy, antibiotics should be used prudently and efficiently. A survey was sent to Wallonian rural veterinarians in order to assess the use of antibiotics before, during and after bovine elective caesarean section, the most common surgical procedure in Belgian rural practice. Results were analysed in the light of the current guidelines formulated by the Belgian Centre of Expertise on

The growing interest in multidrug-resistant (MDR) Citrobacter species stems from their epidemiological significance and their potential to harbor antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with mobile genetic elements playing a central role in their dissemination. Wastewater treatment plants play an important role in the formation of such MDR strains due to the high rate of horizontal gene transfer in these environments. In this study, we isolated the MDR strain KOS1-1 of Citrobacter portucalensis from wastewater, sequenced its genome, and characterized its ARG content and plasmid profile. This strai

BACKGROUND: The increasing importation of frozen poultry into Togo raises concerns about the microbiological safety and antimicrobial resistance of associated pathogens. Despite the public health risks posed by resistant foodborne bacteria, data on resistance profiles, resistance genes, and virulence factors in imported frozen chickens in Togo remain limited. This study aims to address this gap by characterizing these factors in pathogenic strains isolated from imported poultry.
METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective study was undertaken to assess the microbiological quality and resistance pr

UNLABELLED: Mobile genetic elements play a pivotal role in the adaptation of bacterial populations, allowing them to rapidly cope with hostile conditions, including the presence of antimicrobial compounds. IncA/C conjugative plasmids (ACPs) are efficient vehicles for dissemination of multidrug resistance genes in a broad range of pathogenic species of Enterobacteriaceae ACPs have sporadically been reported in Vibrio cholerae, the infectious agent of the diarrheal disease cholera. The regulatory network that controls ACP mobility ultimately depends on the transcriptional activation of multiple

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Failure of uncomplicated gonococcal infections acquired in the Far East to respond to doses of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been identified in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In the Republic of the Philippines, 54.3% of strains exhibited decreased susceptibility to fluoroquinolones; 12% of strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin. This study was undertaken to compare the antimicrobial susceptibilities of gonococcal isolates in Bangkok, Thailand, with those in the Republic of the Ph

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance in staphylococci, often associated with treatment failure, is increasingly reported in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate patterns and predictors of antimicrobial resistance among Staphylococcus spp. isolates from canine samples submitted to the bacteriology laboratory at the University of Pretoria academic veterinary hospital between 2007 and 2012. Retrospective data of 334 Staphylococcus isolates were used to calculate the proportion of samples resistant to 15 antimicrobial agents. The Cochran-Armitage trend test was used to inv

INTRODUCTION: The effective dual antibiotics ceftriaxone (CRO) and azithromycin (AZM) have successfully treated Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) infection, however, the CRO- and AZM-resistant strains have been sporadically detected globally and in Thailand. Furthermore, there are no currently antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the GC isolates obtained from soldiers reported in Thailand. Hence, this is the first study to describe the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of GC isolates obtained from predominately soldiers who seeking care at Military Camp Hospitals, in Thailand from 2014 to 202

Salmonella spp. pose a global threat as a leading cause of foodborne illnesses, particularly prevalent in the European Union (EU), where it remains the second cause of foodborne outbreaks. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella spp. has become a critical concern, complicating treatment strategies and escalating the risk of severe infections. The study focuses on large and small ruminants, identifying a prevalence of Salmonella spp. in slaughterhouses and revealing varied AMR rates across antimicrobial families throughout a meta-analysis. Also, comparison with AMR in huma
