Clinical and microbiological assessment of trachoma in the kolofata health district, far north region, cameroon.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Trachoma is a sight-threatening process triggered by the infection of the conjunctiva with Chlamydiae. Blindness associated with trachoma was reported in Sahelian areas of Cameroon. However, data on the prevalence of this neglected infection in the Far North Region are not available. The aim of this study was a) to assess clinical trachoma and b) to detect Chlamydia in the conjunctiva of trachomatous populations living in the Far North Regions of Cameroon. METHODS: A total of 2,423 randomly selected children (1-10 years) and 1,590 women over 14 from randomly selected vill

Strategies to control trachoma.

Trachoma is a significant public health problem that is endemic in 57 countries, affecting 40.6 million people and contributing to 4% of the global burden of blindness. Repeated episodes of infection from Chlamydia trachomatis lead to long-term inflammation, scarring of the tarsal conjunctiva and distortion of the upper eyelid with in-turning of eyelashes that abrade the surface of the globe. This constant abrasion, in turn, can cause irreversible corneal opacity and blindness. The Alliance for the Global Elimination of Trachoma by 2020 (GET2020) has adopted the SAFE (Surgery, Antibiotics, Fac

Progression of eye disease in "cured" leprosy patients: implications for understanding the pathophysiology of ocular disease and for addressing eyecare needs.

BACKGROUND: Ocular damage in leprosy is due either to nerve damage or infiltration by mycobacteria. There is currently little information about the magnitude and nature of incident ocular pathology in cured leprosy patients. This information would increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of ocular involvement in leprosy and help in developing programmes to address the eyecare needs of leprosy patients who have been released from treatment. The cumulative incidence of leprosy related ocular pathology and cataract was measured during an 11 year follow up period in cured leprosy patients

Blindness and low vision in Jimma Zone, Ethopia: results of a population-based survey.

A population-based study on the prevalence of blindness and low vision was carried out in Jimma Zone, south-western Ethiopia between November 1994 and January 1995. A total of 7423 people from a sample of 8215 (90.4%) was examined. Sixty-three (0.85%) were blind (visual acuity less than 3/60 in the better eye) and 125 people (1.7%) had low vision (less than 6/18-3/60). Cataract and aphakia (52.4%), corneal opacity and phthisis bulbi (25.4%), and glaucoma (9.5%) were the major causes of blindness. Cataract (56.8%), refractive errors (28.8%), and corneal opacity (12.8%) were the major causes of

Ipsilateral Eyelid Disorders Following Ocular Brachytherapy.

BACKGROUND: While episcleral brachytherapy is an effective treatment for uveal melanoma, its long-term complications have primarily focused on intraocular structures. Eyelid disorders following brachytherapy are rarely reported despite potential complications related to the plaque surgery. This retrospective study aimed to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors for acquired ipsilateral eyelid disorders (IEDs) after ocular brachytherapy. DESIGN: A retrospective clinical cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent episcleral brachytherapy at a single tertiary center b

Longitudinal changes in tear cytokines and antimicrobial proteins in trachomatous disease.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is a neglected tropical disease caused by ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis, where repeated infections and chronic inflammation can ultimately result in scarring, trichiasis and blindness. While scarring is thought to be mediated by a dysregulated immune response, the kinetics of cytokines and antimicrobial proteins in the tear film have not yet been characterised. METHODOLOGY: Pooled tears from a Gambian cohort and Tanzanian cohort were semi-quantitatively screened using a Proteome Profiler Array to identify cytokines differentially regulated in disease.
