Model for assessment of carious lesion remineralization, and remineralization by a novel toothpaste.

This study is of a novel toothpaste which induced remineralization of carious lesions in specific pathogen-free Osborne-Mendel rats. Randomly distributed weanlings in 7 groups (n = 10) each were initially induced to develop carious lesions as a result of a severe dietary and bacteriological challenge. Thus, all were inoculated with S. mutans 10449S, ate diet 2000CS (containing 56% cornstarch) ad libitum, and, upon weaning and for 10 additional days, drank demineralized water supplemented to 10% (w/v) with sucrose (SW) ad libitum. During these 10 days, 6 of the 7 groups of rats were topically t

On topical application of fluorides and its inhibiting effect on caries.

The observations of interest made in this investigation may be summarized as follows: 1. Conventional fluoride application by mouthrinsing with neutral NaF solution (0.025% daily for three weeks or three months; or 0.05% solution daily; or 0.2% solution weekly for three weeks) is found to result in only moderate and insignificant uptake of F in facial enamel surfaces. The gain is in the order of a hundred ppm within 10 to 15 microns' depth (as determined by an acid etching technique) and a few hundred ppm at 0.02 to 0.05 microns (according to pilot ion probe analysis). 2. Painting, at one week

Comparative oral health status of two pre-Hispanic archaeological sites in Costa Rica.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Dental and periodontal indicators provide key biocultural information for reconstructing diet, health, and cultural practices in ancient populations. This study compares oral health profiles from two pre-Hispanic Costa Rican sites located in distinct ecological settings: Palo Blanco (600-1,200 AD, Tempisque lowlands) and Rodríguez (800-1,550 AD, Central Highlands). METHODS: Macroscopic dental data were recorded for 11 individuals (seven from Palo Blanco site and four from Rodríguez site). Variables assessed included dental caries, calculus, antemortem tooth loss (AMTL), pe

3D surface defect map for assessing buccolingual profile of single tooth gaps following alveolar ridge preservation.

AIM: A new, non-invasive approach suggests using single intraoral optical scanning to analyze the ridge profile of single-tooth gaps following alveolar ridge preservation in the absence of a baseline scan. This method involves creating a three-dimensional (3D) surface map to identify and assess contour changes and ridge profiles based on the adjacent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was designed as a cross-sectional pilot analysis on a convenience sample of patients undergoing alveolar ridge preservation. Intraoral optical scans were taken on 23 patients, capturing data from 30

Objective assessment of the contribution of dental esthetics and facial attractiveness in men via eye tracking.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, greater emphasis has been placed on smile esthetics in dentistry. Eye tracking has been used to objectively evaluate attention to the dentition (mouth) in female models with different levels of dental esthetics quantified by the aesthetic component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This has not been accomplished in men. Our objective was to determine the visual attention to the mouth in men with different levels of dental esthetics (IOTN levels) and background facial attractiveness, for both male and female raters, using eye tracking. METHODS: Facial i

[Neuropsychiatric symptoms revealing pseudohypoparathyroidism with Fahr's syndrome].

UNLABELLED: Fahr's syndrome is characterized by the presence of intracerebral, bilateral and symmetrical non-arteriosclerotic calcifications, located in the central grey nuclei. One of its main etiologies is pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP), due to a resistance to the action of parathormone (PTH) with essentially hypocalcaemia and a normal or a high rate of PTH. CASE REPORT: Mr B.A. is a 36-year-old man, admitted to hospital because of refractory psychotic symptoms associated with alcohol abuse and fits of convulsion, for diagnostic and therapeutic update. Mr B.A. had presented convulsions sinc

The development and pathologic processes that influence maxillary sinus pneumatization.

The maxillary sinus is universally described as a pyramidal-shaped cavity in the maxilla. Hypoplasia, which can occur unilaterally or bilaterally, is graded by the authors by the degree of failure of descent below the nasal floor in achieving its position adjacent to the posterior dentition in the adult. Unlike early studies using plain X-rays, which considered pneumatization into the zygomatic recess and dental alveolus as criteria, the authors have adopted the above-cited parameters based on computed tomography (CT) imaging, which reveals that even when smaller the sinus retains a pyramidal

Accessing and restoring root caries: a case report.

Adequate access to root caries can be problematic. The inability to view, isolate, and access the entire lesion may result in residual caries, poor adaptation of the restoration, and defective margins. Minor periodontal procedures, ranging from a mini-flap involving only one tooth, to conventional flap surgery can provide increased visibility and access to these troublesome areas. Through utilization of this technique, excellent preparations and restorations can be achieved. Restorative materials with a high potential for fluoride release as well as uptake should be highly considered in cases

Scalloped dental implants: a retrospective analysis of radiographic and clinical outcomes of 17 NobelPerfect implants in 6 patients.

BACKGROUND: The scalloped dental implant (NobelPerfect, Nobel Biocare, Yorba Linda, CA, USA) is designed to biologically guide and facilitate interproximal bone remodeling during healing and to maintain bone height and papillae during functional loading. The design features of the scalloped implant include hard and soft tissue apposition areas, which are parallel to each other and mirror the cementoenamel junction. The hard tissue surface area is intended for osseointegration. The soft tissue surface area is meant to support the connective tissue zone and to provide a space for the subgingival

A mixed-bacteria ecological approach to understanding the role of the oral bacteria in dental caries causation: an alternative to Streptococcus mutans and the specific-plaque hypothesis.

For more than 100 years, investigators have tried to identify the bacteria responsible for dental caries formation and to determine whether their role is one of specificity. Frequent association of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Streptococcus mutans with caries activity gave credence to their being specific cariogens. However, dental caries occurrence in their absence, and the presence of other bacteria able to produce substantial amounts of acid from fermentable carbohydrate, provided arguments for non-specificity. In the 1940s, Stephan found that the mixed bacteria in dental plaque produced a
