The effectiveness of using magnetic resonance imaging in syncope patients visiting an emergency department: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing acceptance of conducting minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced the Hospitals Without Walls (HWW) program in March 2020. This program granted hospitals regulatory flexibility to offer services and procedures in nontraditional locations, including ASCs. However, implementation hurdles persist. METHODS: A survey was sent to 235 surgeons regarding the use of ASCs for performing TLIF surgeries on elderly patients. Multiple-choice quest

Comparison of perioperative outcomes following open versus minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion in obese patients.

OBJECT: Minimally invasive (MI) transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) has proven to be effective in the treatment of spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc disease (DDD). Compared with the traditional open TLIF, the MI procedure has been associated with less blood loss, less postoperative pain, and a shorter hospital stay. However, it is uncertain whether the advantages of an MI TLIF also apply specifically to obese patients. This study was dedicated to evaluating whether obese patients reap the perioperative benefits similar to those seen in patients with normal body mass index (BMI)

Association of catechol-O-methyltransferase genetic variants with outcome in patients undergoing surgical treatment for lumbar degenerative disc disease.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Surgical treatment for lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) has been associated with highly variable results in terms of postoperative pain relief and functional improvement. Many experts believe that DDD should be considered a chronic pain disorder as opposed to a degenerative disease. Genetic variation of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been associated with variation in human pain sensitivity and response to analgesics in previous studies. PURPOSE: To determine whether genetic variation of COMT is associated with clinical outcome after surgical treatme

Risk Factors for Symptomatic Contralateral Foraminal Stenosis After Unilateral Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion.

OBJECTIVE: The most common cause of contralateral symptoms after unilateral transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is contralateral foraminal stenosis (FS). This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the cause of and risk factors for contralateral FS after unilateral TLIF with a single cage. METHODS: Patients with degenerative lumbar spinal disorders who underwent unilateral TLIF at L4-5 were divided into 2 groups: those without contralateral radicular symptoms after surgery (group A; n = 340) and those with contralateral radicular symptoms after surgery (group B; n = 16). Temporal Evolution of Disc in Young Patients with Low Back Pain and Stress Reaction in Lumbar Vertebrae.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although stress-induced bony changes often resolve with conservative treatment, the long-term effects of such mechanical stresses on intervertebral discs have not been studied. We aimed to assess the differences in the temporal evolution of disc in segments of the lumbar spine with and without signs of increased mechanical stresses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using MR imaging performed >6 months apart, 2 radiologists evaluated lumbar intervertebral discs for degenerative changes affecting the annulus fibrosus, the nucleus pulposus, and the endplates in 42 patients (22 male

Volumetric change in interbody bone graft after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF): a prospective study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to quantify the change in the volume of the interbody bone graft after the PLIF and monitor the change over time for subsequent analysis. METHODS: The 114 cases were selected as the subjects of this study. The observation period was for 5 years following the surgery. The volume of the bone graft in the interbody space was calculated by summing up the cross-sectional area of the bone graft on each axial image multiplied by the height (2 mm) (the volume of the two cages was excluded). The volume ratio (%) = (bone graft volume)/(total volume of the interbody

[Plain radiographs of the spine: static and relationships between spine and pelvis].

Man, with his erect posture, evolves in a world subject to the laws of gravity. His spine reflects these constraints. The morphology and static of human spine and biomechanical relationships between spine and pelvis are in direct relation with bipedia. Owing to this position the pelvis widened and straightened, characteristic sagittal spinal curves appeared and the perispinal muscles were deeply reorganized. Each pelvis is characterized by an important anatomical landmark: the pelvic incidence that reflects the sagittal morphology of the pelvis. Based on this anatomical characteristic, a chain

Rate of fusion using novel synthetic bone graft mixed with cellular allograft product in lumbar fusions.

BACKGROUND: Over 400,000 spine fusions are performed in the United States annually with 75% involving the lumbar region. It is the indicated treatment of many chronic orthopedic conditions that fail conservative management. There are numerous surgical approaches; however, common to all is the removal of the intervertebral disc and the insertion of a bone graft which promotes arthrodesis. Iliac crest autografts are regarded as the "gold standard" bone graft material for lumbar fusions; however, they come with a significant complication rate. Recently developed biologic mixtures, such as the one
