Retracted: Increased risk of stomach and esophageal malignancies in people with AIDS.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/withdrawalpolicy). This article has been retracted at the request of the Editor-in-Chief and Authors. The authors recently discovered two programming errors that affected the results in their article on the epidemiology of esophageal and stomach cancers in human immunodeficiency virus infected people. As a result of these errors, the standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were too high. The corrected SIRs are all lower than the authors reported, and the corrected SIR for stomach canc

Computed Tomography Features and Clinical Prognostic Characteristics of Hepatoid Adenocarcinoma of the Stomach.

PURPOSE: Hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the stomach (HAS) is a highly malignant and aggressive tumor. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical, computed tomography (CT), and prognostic features of HAS to increase the awareness of this entity and determine its distinguishing features from non-HAS tumors. METHODS: The CT features and clinical data of 47 patients in our hospital with pathologically documented HAS were retrospectively analyzed, and the relevant differences between pure HAS (pHAS) and mixed HAS (mHAS) were determined. In addition, 141 patients with non-HAS tumors in the

Incidence trends for twelve cancers in younger adults-a rapid review.

Many cancer referral guidelines use patient's age as a key criterium to decide who should be referred urgently. A recent rise in the incidence of colorectal cancer in younger adults has been described in high-income countries worldwide. Information on other cancers is more limited. The aim of this rapid review was to determine whether other cancers are also increasing in younger age groups, as this may have important implications for prioritising patients for investigation and referral. We searched MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science for studies describing age-related incidence trends for color

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Future Cancer Risk.

The study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence for the prevention of future cancers following bariatric surgery. A systematic literature search of the Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed databases (2007-2023), Google Scholar and grey literature was conducted. A meta-analysis was performed using the inverse variance method and random effects model. Thirty-two studies involving patients with obesity who received bariatric surgery and control patients who were managed with conventional treatment were included. The meta-analysis suggested b

MCM2 expression levels predict diagnosis and prognosis in gastric cardiac cancer.

BACKGROUND: Gastric Cardiac Cancer (GCC) has high incidence and poor prognosis requiring early screening of high-risk populations. Minichromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins are used as diagnostic-biomarkers in many cancers but not validated for GCC. We evaluate MCM protein 2 (MCM2), comparing it with the validated markers Ki67 and PCNA. METHODS: GCC and corresponding cardiac precancerous samples were immunostained with Ki67, MCM2 and PCNA antibodies. RESULTS: 90% of dysplasia samples expressed MCM2, whereas Ki67 and PCNA were expressed in 67% and 80% respectively. The sensitivity and negativ

THE GROWING EVIDENCE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OBESITY AND CANCER AND THE ROLE OF BARIATRIC SURGERY.

Obesity is recognized as a significant risk factor for various types of cancer. Although the incidence of some types of cancer across various primary sites is decreasing due to specific prevention measures (screening programs, smoking cessation), the incidence of neoplasms in the young population shows a significant increase associated with obesity. There is sufficient evidence to say that bariatric surgery has been shown to significantly lower the risk of developing obesity-associated cancers, which are linked to metabolic dysregulation, chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, and hormonal a

Laminins and TGF-beta maintain cell polarity and functionality of human gastric glandular epithelium.

The human gastric glandular epithelium produces a gastric lipase enzyme (HGL) that plays an important role in digestion of dietary triglycerides. To assess the involvement of extracellular matrix components and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) in the regulation of this enzymic function, normal gastric epithelial cells were cultured on collagen type I, Matrigel, and laminins (LN)-1 and -2 with or without TGF-beta1. Epithelial morphology and HGL expression were evaluated using microscopy techniques, enzymic assays, Western blot, Northern hybridization, and RT-PCR. A correlation was o

Synchronous occurrence of Waldenström macroglobulinemia and HER2-positive gastric adenocarcinoma with gastrointestinal stromal tumor: a rare case report.

There are very few reports of gastric cancer (GC) and gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) occurring at the same time in the literature. In particular, the collision of GIST and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2)-positive gastric carcinoma in a patient with Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) has never been reported. We report the case of an 80-year-old male who initially presented with dizziness with fatigue for more than 1 month. He underwent total gastrectomy. Pathology revealed GC (moderately to poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma), GIST (low-risk category) and low-g

Does childhood obesity foreshadow a future time-bomb of early and more aggressive cancers?

There has been a global explosion in the prevalence of childhood obesity with 20% of children worldwide now growing up with excess weight and, despite many calls for interventions to redress the costs to health and society, rates continue to rise. It has also recently been observed that there is a global trend with the incidence of early-onset cancers, diagnoses prior to age 50, increasing. We outline the different lines of evidence implicating that these two trends may be linked. Conclusive proof will only be obtained when longitudinal studies, initiated after the current surge in childhood o

Global cancer statistics 2024: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 34 cancers in 186 countries.

This article provides updated global cancer statistics for the year 2024 based on the GLOBOCAN estimates of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The authors describe national cancer incidence and mortality by world region and the Human Development Index and predict the burden in 2050 based on demographic trends. In 2024, an estimated 20.6 million new cancer cases (19.5 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and 9.8 million deaths (9.7 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) occurred worldwide, equivalent to one in five people developing cancer during their lifetime and one i

Chinese clinical practice guidelines for super minimally invasive surgery of digestive tract tumors.

The mode of organ resection and reconstruction that has been used to treat digestive tract tumors (DTTs) can cure the disease. However, it involves the surgical resection of critical structures (such as the cardia, pylorus, and anus) and gastrointestinal reconstruction, which alter the physiological anatomy of the digestive system. These changes often lead to numerous postoperative complications and severely affect the patient's quality of life (e.g., refractory gastroesophageal reflux following proximal gastrectomy, dumping syndrome after subtotal gastrectomy, loss of anal function after low

[Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: a broad clinical spectrum from incidental -discovery to acute gastrointestinal bleeding].

Three cases of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are reported as typical examples of the broad clinical spectrum in which these rare tumors can be detected. The first case describes an 82-year-old patient with a hemorrhagic shock due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding from a GIST of the stomach. GIST most frequently present with either gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain or a detectable mass on physical examination or by ultrasound imaging. Clinically asymptomatic tumor growth also occurs as demonstrated by the second case of a 44-year-old -woman with an incidental finding of GIST d

Targeting Nuclear Exporter Protein XPO1/CRM1 in Gastric Cancer.

Gastric cancer remains an unmet clinical problem in urgent need of newer and effective treatments. Here we show that the nuclear export protein, Exportin 1 (XPO1, chromosome region maintenance 1 or CRM1), is a promising molecular target in gastric cancer. We demonstrate significant overexpression of XPO1 in a cohort of histologically diverse gastric cancer patients with primary and metastatic disease. XPO1 RNA interference suppressed gastric cancer cell growth. Anti-tumor activity was observed with specific inhibitor of nuclear export (SINE) compounds (selinexor/XPOVIO), second-generation comp
