Profiling Humoral Immune Response Against Pre-Erythrocytic and Erythrocytic Antigens of Malaria Parasites Among Neotropical Primates in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Human malaria due to zoonotic transmission has been recorded in the Atlantic Forest, an extra-Amazonian area in Brazil, which are a challenge for malaria control. Naturally acquired humoral immune response against pre-erythrocytic and erythrocytic antigens of Neotropical primates (NP) was evaluated here to improve the knowledge about the exposure of those animals to the malaria transmission and support the identification of the potential reservoirs of the disease in the Atlantic Forest. Blood samples of 154 monkeys from three areas of the Atlantic Forest were used to identify IgG antibodies ag

Integrated risk mapping and landscape characterisation of lymphatic filariasis and loiasis in South West Nigeria.

Nigeria has the heaviest burden of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in sub-Saharan Africa, which is caused by the parasite Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. LF is targeted for elimination and the national programme is scaling up mass drug administration (MDA) across the country to interrupt transmission. However, in some regions the co-endemicity of the filarial parasite Loa loa (loiasis) is an impediment due to the risk of severe adverse events (SAEs) associated with the drug ivermectin. To better understand factors influencing LF elimination in loiasis areas, this study

Investigating unlicensed retail drug vendors' preparedness and knowledge about malaria: An exploratory study in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Despite major efforts to increase the uptake of preventive measures and timely use of the first line antimalarial treatment artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT), Uganda continues to fall short of meeting its national malaria control targets. One of the challenges has been scaling up effective measures in rural and remote areas where the unlicensed private retail sector remains the first point of contact and a common source of treatment. The current paper discusses unlicensed vendors' (1) training related to malaria case management for children aged five and under, and (2)

Deforestation: effects on vector-borne disease.

This review addresses changes in the ecology of vectors and epidemiology of vector-borne diseases which result from deforestation. Selected examples are considered from viral and parasitic infections (arboviruses, malaria, the leishmaniases, filariases, Chagas Disease and schistosomiasis) where disease patterns have been directly or indirectly influenced by loss of natural tropical forests. A wide range of activities have resulted in deforestation. These include colonisation and settlement, transmigrant programmes, logging, agricultural activities to provide for cash crops, mining, hydropower

Changing epidemiology of yellow fever virus in Oyo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Yellow Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease endemic in tropical Africa and Latin America and is transmitted through infected mosquitoes. The earliest outbreak of yellow fever in Nigeria was reported in Lagos in 1864 with subsequent regular outbreaks reported until 1996. A large epidemic of yellow fever occurred in Oyo State in April and May 1987 following an epidemic of sylvatic yellow fever in Eastern Nigeria the previous year. For 21 years, no further confirmed cases were reported until September 2017 following which Nigeria has been responding to successive outbreaks. The

Sporadic Rift Valley Fever Outbreaks in Humans and Animals in Uganda, October 2017-January 2018.

INTRODUCTION: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis. The Uganda Ministry of Health received alerts of suspected viral haemorrhagic fever in humans from Kiruhura, Buikwe, Kiboga, and Mityana districts. Laboratory results from Uganda Virus Research Institute indicated that human cases were positive for Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) by polymerase chain reaction. We investigated to determine the scope of outbreaks, identify exposure factors, and recommend evidence-based control and prevention measures. METHODS: A suspected case was defined as a person with acute fever onset,

Do we protect ourselves against West Nile Virus? A systematic review on knowledge, attitudes, and practices and their determinants.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus. In humans, 80% of infections are asymptomatic, while approximately 20% experience influenza-like symptoms. Fewer than 1% develop the neuroinvasive form which can lead to encephalitis, meningitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and even death. The global spread of the virus to areas where it was not previously present has become a growing concern. Since the 2000 s, there have been numerous outbreaks affecting local and travelling populations worldwide. Given the lack of a vaccine, preventative measures are primarily focused on surveill

Development of a new peptide-bead coupling method for an all peptide-based Luminex multiplexing assay for detection of Plasmodium falciparum antibody responses.

Using a recombinant protein antigen for antibody testing shows a sum of antibody responses to multiple different immune epitopes existing in the protein antigen. In contrast, the antibody testing to an immunogenic peptide epitope reflects a singular antibody response to the individual peptide epitope. Therefore, using a panel of peptide epitopes provides an advantage for profiling multiple singular antibody responses with potential to estimate recent malaria exposure in human infections. However, transitioning from malaria immune epitope peptide-based ELISA to an all peptide bead-based multipl

Combined effects of hydrometeorological hazards and urbanisation on dengue risk in Brazil: a spatiotemporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Temperature and rainfall patterns are known to influence seasonal patterns of dengue transmission. However, the effect of severe drought and extremely wet conditions on the timing and intensity of dengue epidemics is poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to quantify the non-linear and delayed effects of extreme hydrometeorological hazards on dengue risk by level of urbanisation in Brazil using a spatiotemporal model. METHODS: We combined distributed lag non-linear models with a spatiotemporal Bayesian hierarchical model framework to determine the exposure-lag-response associa

Characterization and clustering of immunocompetent proteins based on ESM-2 sequence embedding and physicochemical feature fusion.

OBJECTIVE: Traditional sequence-comparison methods face challenges when classifying and identifying low-homology proteins formed by convergent evolution. In this exploratory study, we built a PCA-based unsupervised clustering workflow combining high-dimensional embeddings from the frozen pre-trained protein-language model ESM-2 and weighted-fused physicochemical features. The workflow was explored for family-level grouping, identification of putative functional conservation, and cross-species evolutionary analysis of immune-active proteins. An independent external test dataset was further used

PfHDAC1 is an essential regulator of P. falciparum asexual proliferation and host cell invasion genes with a dynamic genomic occupancy responsive to artemisinin stress.

UNLABELLED: Plasmodium falciparum, the deadly protozoan parasite responsible for malaria, has a tightly regulated gene expression profile closely linked to its intraerythrocytic development cycle. Epigenetic modifiers of the histone acetylation code have been identified as key regulators of the parasite's transcriptome but require further investigation. In this study, we map the genomic distribution of Plasmodium falciparum histone deacetylase 1 (PfHDAC1) across the erythrocytic asexual development cycle and find it has a dynamic occupancy over a wide array of developmentally relevant genes. Age-Specific Seroprevalence of Dengue IgG Antibodies Among Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults in North India: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Dengue is a major mosquito-borne viral infection in India, with substantial underestimation of the true infection burden due to asymptomatic and subclinical cases. Seroprevalence studies provide a more reliable estimate of cumulative exposure and population-level immunity. Limited data are available comparing age-specific seroprevalence across late childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood within the same population. This study aimed to determine dengue IgG seroprevalence among children, adolescents, and young adults in a tertiary care setting in North India and to assess its asso

Dual level dengue diagnosis using lightweight multilayer perceptron with XAI in fog computing environment and rule based inference.

Over the last fifty years, arboviral infections have made an unparalleled contribution to worldwide disability and morbidity. Globalization, population growth, and unplanned urbanization are the main causes. Dengue is regarded as the most significant arboviral illness among them due to its prior dominance in growth. The dengue virus is mostly transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes. The human body infected with dengue virus (DenV) will experience certain adverse impacts. To keep the disease under control, some of the preventative measures implemented by different countries need to be updated

High seroprevalence of selected vector-borne pathogens in dogs from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are illnesses caused by pathogens transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as ticks and mosquitoes. Many CVBDs, including dirofilariosis, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis, are globally distributed and may cause a variety of clinical signs in dogs. Several CVBD agents are zoonotic, making epidemiological surveillance a joint veterinary and public health effort. In this study, we determined the seropositivity of four pathogens from dogs on Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, a US Commonwealth located in the western Pacific Ocean. METHODS: Blood s

Improving ductal carcinoma in situ classification by convolutional neural network with exponential linear unit and rank-based weighted pooling.

BACKGROUND: The negative synergy between poor nutritional status and infectious diseases is doubly detrimental in pregnancy. In Sierra Leone, maternal malnutrition is amongst the highest in the world, while maternal mortality is high at 1320/100,000 live births and stunting in under-five is 37.9%, ranked 110/132 worldwide. Maternal malnutrition has been associated with preterm birth, small-for-gestational age infants, and poor maternal outcomes. Infants born prematurely or small-for-gestational age experience higher mortality and are at risk for stunting and decreased cognitive performance. Nu
