Vinylbenzyl Chloride/Styrene-Grafted SBS Copolymers via TEMPO-Mediated Polymerization for the Fabrication of Anion Exchange Membranes for Water Electrolysis.

In this work, a commercial SBS was functionalized with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-N-oxyl stable radical (TEMPO) via free-radical activation initiated with benzoyl peroxide (BPO). The obtained macroinitiator was used to graft both vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and styrene/VBC random copolymer chains from SBS to create g-VBC-x and g-VBC-x-co-Sty-z graft copolymers, respectively. The controlled nature of the polymerization as well as the use of a solvent allowed us to reduce the extent of the formation of the unwanted, non-grafted (co)polymer, thereby facilitating the graft copolymer's purific

Allergic reaction and metal hypersensitivity after shoulder joint replacement.

PURPOSE: Metal ion release may cause local and systemic effects and induce hypersensitivity reactions. The aim of our study is first to determine if implant-related hypersensitivity correlates to patient symptoms or not; second, to assess the rate of hypersensitivity and allergies in shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: Forty patients with shoulder replacements performed between 2015 and 2017 were studied with minimum 2-year follow-up; no patient had prior metal implants. Each patient underwent radiographic and clinical evaluation using the Constant-Murley Score (CMS), 22 metal and cement haptens

Acne in the first three decades of life: An update of a disorder with profound implications for all decades of life.

Acne vulgaris is a chronic, inflammatory, skin condition that involves the pilosebaceous follicles and is influenced by a variety of factors including genetics, androgen-stimulation of sebaceous glands with abnormal keratinization, colonization with Cutibacterium acnes (previously called Propionibacterium acnes), and pathological immune response to inflammation. Acne can occur at all ages and this discussion focuses on the first three decades of life. Conditions that are part of the differential diagnosis and/or are co-morbid with acne vulgaris are also considered. Acne in the first year of li

Evaluating the Effects of Oral and Topical Simvastatin in the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris: A Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common dermatologic disorder which results in psychological consequences. Inflammatory responses play an important role in the development of inflammatory acne lesions. Recently, many studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects of statins; thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of oral and topical Simvastatin as adjunct therapy in the treatment of acne vulgaris. METHODS: A total of 76 patients with moderate to very severe acne vulgaris, all receiving oral azithromycin (250 mg, 3 times a week, orally) and topical benzoyl peroxide gel (5%

Addressing Free Radical Oxidation in Acne Vulgaris.

OBJECTIVE: Comparatively little attention has been paid to the role of free radical oxidation in acne vulgaris. Here, using the traditional abnormalities cited for acne, the authors address the role of free radical oxidation throughout the pathogenesis by detailing the chemistry that may contribute to clinical changes. To probe the effects of free radical oxidation and test an antioxidant, they conducted a preliminary study of topically applied vitamin E. METHODS: Seventeen patients with mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris were evaluated over an eight-week period in two private dermatology practic

Clindamycin phosphate 1.2% / tretinoin 0.025%: a novel fixed-dose combination treatment for acne vulgaris.

The Global Alliance to Improve Outcomes in Acne Group recommends retinoid-based combination therapy as first-line therapy and the preferred treatment approach for almost all acne patients except those with the most severe disease. Clindamycin 1% (as clindamycin phosphate 1.2%)/tretinoin 0.025% (Clin-RA) is a new fixed-dose retinoid-based combination therapy. The aqueous-based gel formulation of Clin-RA was designed to minimize skin irritation and optimize adherence with the therapy. It contains both solubilized and crystalline tretinoin which allows the retinoid to be slowly released onto the

Development and characterization of a novel antiacne niosomal gel of rosmarinic acid.

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potential of rosemarinic acid (ROA), a naturally occurring ester of caffeic acid has been well reported. Antibacterial effect of ROA is attributed to nucleoid damage with an increase in spatial division and condensation of genetic material. ROA has been found dynamic against many human pathogenic bacterial strains but its inhibitory prospective has never been established against skin inflammations caused by Propionibacterium acne. The skin surface in acne prone areas is colonized with Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes which contribute to

Efficacy and tolerability of fixed-combination acne treatment in adolescents.

Acne is common among adolescents and can be difficult to manage. Providing an effective treatment method that offers an early onset of action and a favorable tolerability profile may lead to improved adherence, increased satisfaction, and improved clinical outcomes in this patient population. A post hoc analysis was conducted of 1755 adolescents (age range, 12 to < 18 years) with moderate to severe acne who had been enrolled in 2 double-blind, multicenter studies and were randomized to receive either clindamycin phosphate (CP) 1.2%-benzoyl peroxide (BPO) 2.5% gel, CP 1.2%, BPO 2.5%, or vehicle

The hamster cheek pouch carcinogenesis model.

The Syrian golden hamster cheek pouch carcinogenesis model is probably the best-known animal system that closely compares to events involved in the development of premalignant and malignant human oral cancers. Furthermore, it is one of the most well-characterized models for squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). However, stages of carcinogenesis (initiation, promotion, and progression) have not been well-defined in this system. Basic understanding of the mechanism(s) of carcinogenesis in this organ is instrumental for the development of new strategies for chemoprevention and early chemointervention.

Acne is prevalent but use of its treatments is infrequent among adolescents from the general population.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the use of acne treatments among teenagers in the community. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of use of acne treatments in a general population sample of adolescents and to investigate factors associated with its use. METHODS: During official school examinations, 594 adolescents (14-18 years old) were examined for acne on the face and body using a validated scoring system. In addition, they were interviewed about current and prior treatment use by showing them packages of available (non-)prescription treatments of acne in Belgium. RESULTS: Despite the h

In vivo porphyrin production by P. acnes in untreated acne patients and its modulation by acne treatment.

Propionibacterium acnes is often discussed as a contributing pathogenic factor in the aetiology of acne lesions. The aim of this study was to test which porphyrin patterns are synthesized by P. acnes in vivo in untreated acne patients and during standard acne regimens. These photosensitive compounds are potential targets for photo-dynamic therapy of acne and need to be better characterized in the skin. Using high-performance liquid chromatography coproporphyrin III was the main porphyrin identified in all patients. Coproporphyrin I and protoporphyrin were found at considerably lower concentrat

Acne Vulgaris: Integrating Pathophysiology with Conventional, Herbal, and Nanocarrier-Based Therapeutic Strategies.

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, affecting 9.4% of the population globally, and is one of the most prevalent dermatoses globally. It is most common in adolescents but can continue through adulthood, causing physical and emotional health deterioration. Acne is a multifactorial process involving genetic factors, hormonal factors, sebum production, hyperkeratinization of the follicular lumen, colonization by Cutibacterium acnes bacteria and inflammation [Ma2.1]. Inflammation is now recognised as a critical process from microcomedone formation to the devel
