Previous research has shown that anxious adults provide more threat interpretations of ambiguous stimuli than other clinic and nonclinic persons. We were interested in investigating if the same bias occurs in anxious children and how family processes impact on these children's interpretations of ambiguity. Anxious, oppositional, and nonclinical children and their parents were asked separately to interpret and provide plans of action to ambiguous scenarios. OBJECTIVE: Current psychiatric diagnostic systems do not regard puerperal psychosis as a separate entity. However, there is continuing debate about the validity and clinical utility of this concept. This paper aims to investigate the prognostic importance of a number of clinical features in a sample of patients with puerperal psychosis.
METHOD: A retrospective case note study was conducted on 42 consecutive admissions to a mother-baby unit in a psychiatric hospital. Data were collected on a range of variables, and diagnoses made according to DSM-III-R and RDC criteria for puerperal psychosis.

Childhood family structure has been shown to play an important role in shaping a child's life course development, especially in industrialised societies. One hypothesis which could explain such findings is that parental investment is likely to be diluted in families without both natural parents. A significant portion of the health care dollar has been spent on neonatal intensive care since the early 1970s when technologic developments permitted salvage of very small premature infants. The wisdom of allocating so much for so few has been challenged, especially if the result is an increase in the number of severely mentally and motorically disabled children. Studies from around the world of the secular trends in mortality and morbidity for very and extremely low-birthweight babies uniformly indicate that there have been dramatic decreases in mortality and morbidity in the past 20 years.
