BACKGROUND: Peptidylarginine deiminase type 4 (PAD4/PADI4) post-translationally converts peptidylarginine to citrulline. Recent studies suggest that PADI4 represses expression of p53-regulated genes via citrullination of histones at gene promoters.
METHODS: Expression of PADI4 was investigated in various tumors and non-tumor tissues (n = 1673) as well as in A549, SKOV3 and U937 tumor cell lines by immunohistochemistry, real-time PCR, and western blot. Levels of PADI4 and citrullinated antithrombin (cAT) were investigated in the blood of patients with various tumors by ELISA (n = 1121).

PURPOSE: To evaluate the treatment outcome for enchondromas of the proximal phalanx with pathological fracture.
METHODS: Between June 2008 and October 2012, we treated 9 patients with solitary proximal phalanx enchondromas and pathologic fractures by curetting the tumor, filling the void with a block of autogenous bone chip, and applying a low-profile miniplate. Postoperative follow-up included clinical assessment, pain evaluation, and radiographs.

Bone tumors are relatively rare in the foot and ankle region. Many of them present as cystic lesions on plain films. Due to the relative rarity of these lesions and the complex anatomy of the foot and ankle region, identification of such lesions is often delayed or they get misdiagnosed and mismanaged. This review discusses the most common cystic tumors of the foot and ankle including their radiographic features and principles of management.

Cartilaginous tumours of the extremities are commonly seen in radiographs. Enchondroma is the most frequently encountered tumour. Since the vast majority of enchondromas are asymptomatic, they are typically discovered as incidental findings or along with a pathologic fracture. The authors propose a pictorial review to illustrate the imaging features of cartilaginous bone lesions of the hand and their specificities, and discuss the main differential diagnoses.

PURPOSE: Enchondroma of the hand with a pathologic fracture is generally treated by tumor curettage and bone grafting after the fracture has healed. However, delayed surgery postpones definitive diagnosis and prolongs the period of disability. We have treated pathologic fractures in a single stage through a modified lateral surgical approach with curettage of the tumor and stabilization using injectable calcium sulfate cement. Six cases are reported in which a fibrosarcoma or malignant fibrous histiocytoma developed in relation to an enchondroma in a long bone. Four of the tumours were fibrosarcomata, and two were malignant fibrous histiocytomata. We have applied computer programs originally developed for craniofacial surgical planning and evaluation to complex musculoskeletal problems. These computer programs reformat ordinary CT scans into black and white images of the three-dimensional osseous surfaces found in the scanned volume. BACKGROUND: Osteochondroma (OC) is the most common benign bone tumor, yet hand involvement is uncommon and extraosseous presentations are rarer still. The hypothenar compartment is an exceptionally unusual site, and lack of corticomedullary continuity can mimic soft-tissue and parosteal lesions.
