Associations between sleep duration, insomnia, depression, anxiety and registry-based school grades: A longitudinal study among high-school students.

This study explored the prospective associations between sleep patterns, mental health and registry-based school grades among older adolescents. In the spring of 2019, 1st year high-school students in Western Norway were invited to a survey assessing habitual sleep duration, insomnia, depression and anxiety. Sleep patterns, depression and anxiety were assessed using the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire, the Bergen Insomnia Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. Students consenting to data linkage with the county school authorities were re-invited 2 ye

Genetic correlation and mendelian randomization reveal the impact of sleep traits on urolithiasis risk.

Urolithiasis is a common and recurrent condition in the urological spectrum. Despite various proposed mechanisms, the causal relationship between sleep traits and the risk of urolithiasis remains unclear. We used publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen to perform a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and genetic correlation analysis, evaluating the causal relationship and genetic correlation between sleep traits (chronotype, getting up in the morning, sleep duration, nap during the day, and insomnia) and urolithiasis (ca

Mendelian randomization analyses of 23 known and suspected risk factors and biomarkers for breast cancer overall and by molecular subtypes.

Many risk factors have been identified for breast cancer. The potential causality for some of them remains uncertain, and few studies have comprehensively investigated these associations by molecular subtypes. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate potential causal associations of 23 known and suspected risk factors and biomarkers with breast cancer risk overall and by molecular subtypes using data from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. The inverse-variance weighted method was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for assoc

Association of Poor Sleep Burden in Middle Age and Older Adults With Risk for Delirium During Hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a distressing neurocognitive disorder recently linked to sleep disturbances. However, the longitudinal relationship between sleep and delirium remains unclear. This study assessed the associations of poor sleep burden, and its trajectory, with delirium risk during hospitalization. METHODS: About 321 818 participants from the UK Biobank (mean age 58 ± 8 years [SD]; range 37-74 years) reported (2006-2010) sleep traits (sleep duration, excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia-type complaints, napping, and chronotype-a closely related circadian measure for sleep timing), agg

Association of sleep behaviour and pattern with the risk of glaucoma: a prospective cohort study in the UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVES: Given the role of intraocular pressure in glaucoma, the patient's sleeping pattern might contribute to the development and progression of glaucoma. We performed a study to understand the association between sleep behaviours and glaucoma. DESIGN: Our study was a prospective cohort study. SETTING: This was a prospective cohort study in the UK Biobank. Self-reported data on five sleep behaviours were collected using a questionnaire at baseline. We identified four sleep patterns based on a cluster analysis of the sleep behaviours. PARTICIPANTS: In the UK Biobank, 409 053 participant

Change in circadian preference predicts sustained treatment outcomes in patients with unipolar depression and evening preference.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Eveningness is associated with worse outcomes in depression. It remained unclear if eveningness could be altered with chronobiological therapy and whether such a change would predict long-term outcomes of depression. METHODS: Data from a randomized controlled trial of 5-week adjunctive bright light therapy with a gradual advance protocol conducted in 91 adult patients with nonseasonal unipolar depression and eveningness (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, score ≤ 41) was examined. "Change of eveningness" was defined by Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire score over 41

Salivary Dim-Light Melatonin Onset is Associated with Functional Decline, Respiratory Symptom Emergence, and Survival in Early Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep-wake and circadian disturbances are increasingly recognized in people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (plwALS), but endogenous circadian phase timing and its prognostic significance in early disease remain unclear. We assessed whether salivary dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO), an objective marker of central circadian phase, is altered in early plwALS and whether it provides prognostic information. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal observational study, plwALS within 18 months of symptom onset underwent home-based salivary melatonin sampling under dim-light co

Chrononutrition and cardiometabolic health: circadian timing as a dimension of precision nutrition.

Cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), remain major global health challenges despite widespread adoption of evidence-based dietary guidelines. Traditional nutrition recommendations have largely focused on dietary composition and energy intake, with limited consideration of the timing of food consumption. Growing evidence indicates that metabolic processes are strongly regulated by circadian rhythms, suggesting that when food is consumed may be a critical but underappreciated determinant of cardiometabolic he

The relationship between healthy sleep patterns and the risk of scoliosis: a large prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Currently, prospective evidence on how sleep habits specifically affect scoliosis is nearly nonexistent. We therefore sought to clarify the association between comprehensive sleep behavior patterns and the incidence of this disease. METHODS: This study conducted a prospective cohort study based on the UK Biobank (UKB), including 408,870 participants who did not have scoliosis at baseline. We have constructed a comprehensive sleep scoring system that integrates the following five key indicators: sleep chronotype, sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, and daytime sleepiness. To evaluat

Learning Dance Sequences From Passive and Interactive Videos at Different Times of Day.

This study examined how passive versus interactive videos affect the learning of dance sequences at different times of day. Twenty-four undergraduate physical education students (novices) were recruited through purposive sampling and equally divided into two groups matched on chronotype: one group viewed passive videos, while the other used interactive videos featuring play, pause, forward, and replay functions. Participants completed four sessions-two acquisition sessions, one in the morning (08:00-09:00) and one in the late afternoon (16:00-17:00) on separate days, and two retention sessions

Shift work is associated with selective brain volume loss: a longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Global work patterns are changing, with more individuals engaged in shift work and remaining in the workforce later in life. Shift work is linked to disrupted sleep, impaired cognition, and greater risk of metabolic and neurodegenerative disease; effects that are amplified by aging. However, the neural correlates of shift work remain poorly characterized, leaving a critical gap in understanding how occupational schedules may shape the aging brain. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the relationship between shift work on brain structure in healthy adults, and how brain structure c

The Complex Interplay between Sleep and Neurodegenerative Diseases: An Epidemiological View.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders and neurodegeneration (NDG) are mutually related but the nature of this relationship is unclear. We aimed to better understand the relationship between sleep and neurodegenerative disease by performing a critical review of epidemiological studies that investigated the association of sleep disorders and the subsequent development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), or general dementia. METHODS: We searched for all case-control or prospective cohort studies published in PubMed until August 8 2024 evaluating a series of sleep features and subsequent

Causal Effects of Sleep Traits on Angina Pectoris: Mediation by Cardiovascular Risk Factors.

PURPOSE: Angina pectoris (AP) is a major factor in heightened risk of cardiac arrest and has been previously linked to sleep patterns. It remains unclear if sleep traits play a role in the onset of AP. Our study aims to declare the causality of sleep traits on AP by Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. METHODS: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of sleep traits (sleep duration, insomnia, nap during day, chronotype, getting up in morning, narcolepsy, snoring) were obtained from the UK Biobank. The AP datasets came from an analysis containing samples from the UK biobank, FinnGen, and B

Association between behavioral jet lag with subjective and objective circadian rhythm among Chinese young adults.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral jet lags (social and eating jet lag), the difference in sleep and eating time between weekdays and weekends, are ubiquitous in modern society. However, evidence on the effects of behavioral jet lags on circadian rhythm is limited. METHODS: Social jet lag was assessed using wrist-worn accelerometers. Eating jet lag was measured through Tencent online form with the method of ecological momentary assessment. Total jet lag was calculated as social jet lag plus eating jet lag. Participants were divided into 3 behavioral jet lag patterns: low (both social and eating jet lag <

Sleep characteristics and intervertebral disc degeneration risk: an observational and Mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders are considered a risk factor for aging and skeletal degeneration, but their impact on intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess associations between sleep characteristics and IDD, and to identify potential causal relationships. METHODS: Exposure factors included six unhealthy sleep characteristics: insomnia, short sleep duration (< 7 h), long sleep duration (≥ 9 h), evening chronotype, daytime sleepiness, and snoring. The primary outcomes included cervical disc degeneration (CDD) and lumbar disc degeneration (LDD).

Sleep health dimensions and shift work as longitudinal predictors of cognitive performance in the UK Biobank cohort.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The long-term effects of sleep health and shift work on cognitive performance are unclear. In addition, research has been limited by small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. We conducted one of the largest examinations of the longitudinal influence of sleep health dimensions and shift work on cognitive performance in people of middle and old age using data from the UK Biobank. The hypothesis was that poor sleep health and shift work would predict lower cognitive performance. METHODS: Self-reported sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, insomnia symptoms, chronotype, and

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep behaviors, and incident type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with incident type 2 diabetes; however, the extent to which NAFLD may confer its risk remains uncertain, especially in Europeans. Emerging evidence suggests that sleep behaviors are linked to NAFLD and diabetes. We aimed to measure whether sleep behaviors modified the association between NAFLD and incident type 2 diabetes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 365 339 participants without type 2 diabetes at baseline in UK Biobank data. Five sleep behaviors, including sleep duration, insomnia, snoring, chrono

Understanding the Associations of Prenatal Androgen Exposure on Sleep Physiology, Circadian Proteins, Anthropometric Parameters, Hormonal Factors, Quality of Life, and Sex Among Healthy Young Adults: Protocol for an International, Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: The ratio of the second finger length to the fourth finger length (2D:4D ratio) is considered to be negatively correlated with prenatal androgen exposure (PAE) and positively correlated with prenatal estrogen. Coincidentally, various brain regions are sensitive to PAE, and their functions in adults may be influenced by the prenatal actions of sex hormones. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the relationship between PAE (indicated by the 2D:4D ratio) and various physiological (sex hormone levels and sleep-wake parameters), psychological (mental health), and sexual parameters in h
