In 113 patients with orofacial and general complaints, which they assumed were caused by galvanic currents and/or metallic restorations, clinical dental and medical examinations were performed. The main objectives of our study were to estimate the impact of a mercury cell chlor-alkali (MCCA) complex in Rosignano Solvay (Tuscany, Italy) on the local environment and to assess mercury exposure of inhabitants living near the plant. To study amalgam-related toxicity in a primary target cell type, human oral fibroblasts were grown in a low-serum medium containing 1.25% fetal bovine serum and exposed to Hg2+, a corrosion product of amalgam. A 1-h exposure to various concentrations of Hg2+ resulted in a dose-dependent loss of colony forming efficiency. Removal of the low-molecular-weight thiol cysteine from the medium increased the toxicity of Hg2+ almost 50-fold in comparison with complete medium or medium without fetal bovine serum. To assess the treatment outcomes of direct pulp capping with calcium hydroxide, 248 teeth were examined 0.4-16.6 years (mean, 6.1 ± 4.4) after pulp capping. Only teeth diagnosed to be clinical healthy or with spontaneous pain were capped. The treatment outcome was assessed by interviewing for signs or symptoms responsiveness and sensibility testing with CO(2). The overall survival rate was 76.3% after 13.3 years. 84 patients with oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) were seen in the contact dermatitis clinic. All these patients had reticulate, lacy, plaque-like or erosive lichenoid changes adjacent to amalgam fillings. BACKGROUND: Osteochondral lesions of the knee are difficult to manage. Such lesions can be effectively treated with the matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) "sandwich" technique using autologous chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane in conjuction with autologous cancellous bone grafting (ABG). Few studies have examined this technique to restore the osteochondral unit.
INDICATIONS: The MACI "Sandwich" procedure is indicated when osteochondral lesions are larger than 2 cm2 in size and deeper than 8 to 10 mm, with symptoms consistent with the location of the lesion.
