The tick fauna in Istanbul, Turkey, from 2013 to 2017 and identification of their pathogens by multiplex PCR: an epidemiological study.

Ticks may carry several pathogens as vectors and their pathogen load may vary due to differences in geography, climate and vegetation. In this study, we collected ticks from 39 districts of Istanbul (Turkey) between May and October, from 2013 to 2017, and identified them under stereo-microscope. In addition, we investigated the pathogens that the ticks carry (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia sp. and Babesia sp.) by using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. We collected a total of 875 ticks from the ground and from various animals and kept the

Genetic variability of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in Russia and Central Asia.

Hyalomma marginatum ticks (449 pools, 4787 ticks in total) collected in European Russia and Dermacentor niveus ticks (100 pools, 1100 ticks in total) collected in Kazakhstan were screened by ELISA for the presence of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Virus antigen was found in 10.2 and 3.0 % of the pools, respectively. RT-PCR was used to recover partial sequences of the CCHFV small (S) genome segment from seven pools of antigen-positive H. marginatum ticks, one pool of D. niveus ticks, four CCFH cases and four laboratory virus strains. Additionally, the entire S genome segments o

Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato in Siberian chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) introduced in suburban forests in France.

Numerous vertebrate reservoirs have been described for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (sl), which includes the etiological agents of Lyme Borreliosis (LB). The Siberian chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus) is a rodent originating from Asia, where it is suspected to be a B. burgdorferi reservoir. It has been intentionally released into the wild in Europe since the 1970s, but has not yet been subject to any study regarding its association with the LB agent. In this paper we studied Siberian chipmunk infestation with the LB vector (Ixodes ricinus) and infection prevalence by LB spirochetes in a suburban

Rickettsia parkeri genetic diversity from three different hard tick species (family: Ixodidae).

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia parkeri sensu stricto, a causative agent of spotted fever rickettsiosis, is spread via the bite of infected ticks within the Amblyomma maculatum complex group. In the United States of America (USA), Am. maculatum Koch, 1844 is the primary vector for R. parkeri; however, Amblyomma americanum (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821) have demonstrated potential to transmit R. parkeri under laboratory conditions. In this study, we investigate the genetic differences between R. parkeri detected in Am. maculatum, the primary enzootic vector, and potential second

[The protection of vertebrate animals from experimental tick-borne encephalitis with active and passive immunization against tick antigens].

The active and passive immunization of laboratory animals against Ixodes antigens has been experimentally shown to lead to the development of their resistance to homologous Arthropoda species and a change in the intensity of the circulation of tick-borne encephalitis virus between carriers and their hosts. The immunization of vertebrates with Ixodes antigens may supposedly lead to a decrease in the number of bloodsucking arthropods-carriers of the causative agents of infectious diseases-and protect animals from infections whose causative agents are transmitted by Ixodes ticks.

MULTI-COUNTY TICK SURVEY (ACARI: IXODIDAE) IN MISSOURI USA, 2019 AND 2021.

Ongoing surveillance of tick populations is critical for informing the health of humans, livestock, and companion animals. From 2004 to 2019 in the USA and its territories, the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System data show a 2.1-fold increase in all reportable notifiable tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in humans. Eight tick-borne zoonotic pathogens and 1 syndrome were described for the first time in the USA between 2004 and 2024. In Missouri, 33 counties were surveyed over a 2-year period (2019 and 2021). More than 3,811 ticks were collected during the study: 89.0% Amblyomma americanum,

Tick (Acari: Ixodidae) and tick-borne pathogen prevalence in two suburban counties in Central North Carolina.

North Carolina reports high incidences of spotted fever group rickettsiosis (SFGR) and ehrlichiosis, with cases concentrated in the more urban and suburban central area of the state. To define the spatial distribution of ticks and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in this region, tick surveillance was conducted via (1) drag sampling and (2) passive canine surveillance. Drag sampling was conducted in 18 suburban green spaces (eg, parks, sports fields) in Chatham and Orange counties between June and August 2022. During the same timeframe, animal shelters and veterinary clinics in these coun

Molecular Study of Theileria annulata and Anaplasma spp. in Ixodid Ticks from Southern Regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Ixodid ticks are vectors of pathogens that cause dangerous infectious and parasitic diseases in animals, leading to reduced productivity and, in some cases, mass mortality. In Kazakhstan, information on tick fauna and their epizootological role in the transmission of hemoparasites is limited. This study aimed to determine the species composition of ixodid ticks parasitizing cattle in the Almaty, Zhambyl, and Turkistan oblasts, and to assess their potential role in the transmission of Theileria and Anaplasma spp. A total of 3121 ixodid ticks were collected from cattle, belonging to the genera H

Detection of Amblyomma maculatum and Rickettsia parkeri in prairies of Central Missouri.

The destruction and decline of prairie habitats due to landscape repurposing have profoundly impacted the diversity of plant, animal, and insect life. In the Central United States, the reconstruction of prairie habitats from farmland is a widely applied strategy to raise diversity and recreate a healthy, complex ecosystem. In Central Missouri, we examine the consequences of reconstruction efforts on the prevalence of zoonotic diseases and their associated pathogens by performing tick-flagging at two prairie sites. In doing so, we have observed large populations of Dog ticks, Dermacentor variab

Review of ticks attacking domestic dogs and cats, and their epidemiological role in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens in Poland.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Progressive climate change plays a major role in the expansion of tick populations, as well as the transmission of tick-borne disease pathogens (TBPs) to humans and animals throughout the world. Zoonoses are a growing environmental problem of great importance for public health. In Poland, domestic dogs and cats are mainly infested by Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes crenulatus, Ixodes hexagonus, Ixodes rugicollis and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks from the Ixodidae family. Other tick species, such as I. apronophorus and Haemaphysalis concinna, recorded sporadically on domestic

Detection of Rickettsia spp. in Animals and Ticks in Midwestern Brazil, Where Human Cases of Rickettsiosis Were Reported.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is the most important tick-borne diseases affecting humans in Brazil. Cases of BSF have recently been reported in the Goiás state, midwestern Brazil. All cases have been confirmed by reference laboratories by seroconversion to Rickettsia rickettsii antigens. Because serological cross-reactions among different rickettsial species that belong to the spotted fever group (SFG) are common, the agent responsible for BSF cases in Goiás remains unknown. From March 2020 to April 2022, ticks and plasma were collected from dogs, horses and capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeri
