Measuring and monitoring individual cardiorespiratory fitness through a valid and accessible non-exhaustive surrogate is required. Techniques measuring haemodynamics have shown promise, and this study aimed to optimize the predictive validity of these approaches alongside developing predictive equations. In a two-study design, 8 (pilot study) and 30 (confirmation study) healthy adults completed exercise testing to assess maximal oxygen consumption ( V ̇ O 2 max ${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{2}}}{\mathrm{max}}}}$ ) and an ischaemic occlusion test on the upper thigh to assess superficial

BACKGROUND: Established equations to predict peak oxygen uptake (VO2max) in healthy subjects are not directly applicable to patient populations, including people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). PwMS, who commonly exhibit impaired cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular function, often require tailored predictive models. This study aimed at (1) testing the validity, reliability, and accuracy of four widely used formulae, developed in healthy populations, to estimate VO2max in mildly to moderately disabled women with MS, and (2) develop adjusted formulae tailored on MS features.
METHODS: Fifty-one

BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing has demonstrated clinical utility in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). However, to what extent exercise responses are independent of, or confounded by, aerobic fitness remains unclear.
PURPOSE: To characterize and compare exercise responses in ME/CFS and controls with and without matching for aerobic fitness.
METHODS: As part of the Multi-site Clinical Assessment of ME/CFS (MCAM) study, 403 participants (n = 214 ME/CFS; n = 189 controls), across six ME/CFS clinics, completed ramped cycle ergometry to volitional exhaustio

BACKGROUND: A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating, life-changing event that has profoundly deleterious effects on an individual's health and well-being. Dysregulation of neuromuscular, cardiometabolic, and endocrine organ systems following an SCI contribute to excess morbidity, mortality and a poor quality of life. As no effective treatments currently exist for SCI, the development of novel strategies to improve the functional and health status of individuals living with SCI are much needed. To address this knowledge gap, the current study will determine whether a Home-Based Multimodalit

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic effects of physical exercise depend on its intensity, duration, and type. Conventional cardiovascular rehabilitation (CCVR) programs have significant advantages, but non-conventional activities such as Nordic walking (NW) may offer additional health benefits.
AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of NW on cardiovascular performance and quality of life in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to a CCVR program.
DESIGN: This was a pseudo-randomized, prospective, single-blinded, parallel-group trial.

IMPORTANCE: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy causes limiting symptoms in patients, mediated partly through inefficient myocardial energy use. There is conflicting evidence for therapy with inhibitors of myocardial fatty acid metabolism in patients with nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of oral therapy with trimetazidine, a direct inhibitor of fatty acid β-oxidation, on exercise capacity in patients with symptomatic nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Accurate measurement of venous oxygen saturation ([Formula: see text]) is fundamental for quantifying oxygen consumption (V̇o2) and its Fick determinants. This study evaluated the validity of a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) approach using susceptometry-based oximetry (SBO) to noninvasively measure [Formula: see text] during exercise. First, [Formula: see text] was measured from an antecubital vein in 14 adults (26 ± 5 yr; 8 males) via portable blood analyzer (iSTAT) at rest and during two 5-min bouts of rhythmic handgrip exercise at 30% of maximum voluntary contraction, with temporall

The left atrium (LA) mediates cardiopulmonary interactions. During ventricular systole, the LA functions as a compliant reservoir that is coupled to the left ventricle (LV) and offloads volume from the pulmonary vasculature. We aimed to describe LA reservoir function using phasic relationships between pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) and LA volume events. We included healthy adults (7 M/6 F, 56 ± 8 yr) who were studied at rest and during semirecumbent cycle ergometry at a target of 100 beats/min heart rate. Right heart catheterization was performed to record the PAWP and two-dimensional

Background: Athletes often experience poor sleep quality due to stress, altitude exposure, travel across different time zones, and pre-competition nervousness. Coaches use daytime naps to counteract the negative effects of fragmented nighttime sleep. Napping before competitions has also been used to enhance performance in athletes without sleep problems, with mixed results in previous studies, particularly for endurance performance. Thus, we investigated the effects of napping after partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on endurance performance and wakefulness in athletes. Methods: We recruited 12 h

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a cornerstone in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), targeting skeletal muscle to improve functional performance. However, there is substantial inter-individual variability in the effect of PR on functional performance, which cannot be fully accounted for by generic phenotypic factors. We performed an unbiased integrative analysis of the skeletal muscle molecular responses to PR in COPD patients and comprehensively characterized their baseline pulmonary and physical function, body composition, blood profile, comorbidities

Introduction: The inadequate, inappropriate sinus-node tachycardia is not a rare clinical syndrome, defined as a non-paroxysmal, increased sinus-rate at rest, and/or inadequate response to physical and/or emotional stress, and palpitations. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe our experiences with the investigations of our inappropriate sinus-node tachycardia patients. Method: In the last years, 104 patients (92 women, 12 men, mean age: 31 ± 10 years) were treated with this cardiac arrhythmia entity. All patients underwent 12 leads ECG, chest X-ray, echocardiography, Holter-monitoring an

The World Health Organization recognizes obesity as a global and increasing problem for the general population. Because of their reduced physical functioning, people with spinal cord injury (SCI) face additional challenges for maintaining an appropriate whole body energy balance, and the majority with SCI are overweight or obese. SCI also reduces exercise capacity, particularly in those with higher-level injury (tetraplegia). Tetraplegia-specific caloric energy expenditure (EE) data is scarce. Therefore, we measured resting and exercise-based energy expenditure in participants with tetraplegia

BACKGROUND: Exercise capacity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is limited by both breathlessness and leg muscle fatigue. Neural respiratory drive, measured as diaphragm electromyogram (EMGdi) activity expressed as a proportion of maximum (EMGdi%max), quantifies the mechanical load on the respiratory muscles and relates closely to breathlessness. We tested the hypothesis that end-exercise EMGdi%max would be higher in patients stopping because of breathlessness than in those limited by leg fatigue.
METHODS: EMGdi, ventilation, rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), and ventilatory res

UNLABELLED: Functional electrical stimulation-induced leg cycle ergometry (FES-LCE) provides therapeutic exercise for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there exists no systematic approach to predict whether an individual has sufficient thigh muscle strength necessary for FES-LCE exercise.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning model as a predictor of thigh muscle strengths sufficient for short-duration FES-LCE exercise and compare the model's performance with other well-known statistical methods.
METHODS: Six healthy male individuals with

BACKGROUND: A prolonged electrocardiographic PR interval at rest has been considered a benign phenomenon until recently.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that measurement of the PR interval during recovery from physical exertion could improve cardiovascular mortality risk stratification because it would track the dynamic influences of homeostatic mechanisms controlling atrioventricular (AV) conduction.
METHODS: A total of 1,979 consecutive patients (1,244 men and 735 women) with clinically indicated bicycle ergometer tests enrolled in FINCAVAS (the Finnish Cardiovascular Study) were included in th
