Photodynamic therapy as adjunct to non-surgical periodontal treatment in patients on periodontal maintenance: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Recent preclinical and clinical data have suggested the potential benefit of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of periodontitis. However, currently, there are very limited data from controlled clinical trials evaluating the effect of PDT in the treatment of periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of the adjunctive use of PDT in non-surgical periodontal treatment in patients receiving supportive periodontal therapy. Twenty-four patients receiving regularly supportive periodontal therapy were randomly treated with either subg

The association between history of appendectomy and gut microbiota composition: a follow-up cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The appendix is thought to act as a regulatory immune organ and gut microbiota reservoir. Although appendectomy is linked to health risks, its impact on the gut microbiota remains understudied. METHODS: This study is conceived as a cross-sectional retrospective follow-up study. Three comparisons were performed on gut microbiota data using self-reported metadata retrieved from a European laboratory's extensive database. First, subjects with (wA) and without (noA) appendectomy during stool sampling were compared. Second, healthy individuals were selected based on specific criteria

Microbiome-informed study of the mechanistic basis of methane inhibition by Asparagopsis taxiformis in dairy cattle.

UNLABELLED: Copious amounts of methane, a major constituent of greenhouse gases currently driving climate change, are emitted by livestock, and efficient methods that curb such emissions are urgently needed to reduce global warming. When fed to cows, the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis (AT) can reduce enteric methane emissions by up to 80%, but the achieved results can vary widely. Livestock produce methane as a byproduct of methanogenesis, which occurs during the breakdown of feed by microbes in the rumen. The ruminant microbiome is a diverse ecosystem comprising bacteria, protozoa, fungi

Effects of dietary supplementation of bacteriophage cocktail on health status of weanling pigs in a non-sanitary environment.

BACKGROUND: The study evaluated the effects of bacteriophage cocktail (BP) and ZnO administered during weaning time for piglets exposed to a non-sanitary environment. The bacteriophages were designed to eliminate Escherichia coli (K88, K99 and F41), Salmonella (typhimurium and enteritidis), and Clostridium perfreingens (types A and C). Forty 21-day-old crossbreed piglets were assigned to four treatments, including the PC (sanitary environment), NC (non-sanitary environment), BP (NC plus 108 pfu/kg BP), and ZO (NC plus 2,500 mg/kg ZnO). Piglets in the NC, BP and ZO were kept in a non-sanitary e

Determining the protective effects of Yin-Chen-Hao Tang against acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and LC/MS-based metabolomics.

Yin-Chen-Hao Tang (YCHT), consisting of Artemisia annua L., Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, and Rheum Palmatum L., has been used to relieve liver diseases in China for thousands of years. Several protective mechanisms of YCHT on liver injury have been investigated based on metabolomics, but the effects of YCHT on the alterations in the gut microbiota are still unclear. In this study, an integrated approach based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) metabolic profiling was performed to assess the effects of YCHT on liver injury

Differences in microbiota profiles of simple and complicated pediatric appendicitis cases.

This study aimed to identify the differences in microbial composition between simple appendicitis (SA) and complicated appendicitis (CA) in a limited sample size using culture and microbiota analysis. Appendix tissues and rectal swabs for microbiota analysis and conventional cultures were collected from patients. 16S rRNA regions were amplified using a DNA preparation kit with primers designed to target the V3-V4 region. Sixteen (41%) of the patients were classified as CA based on the histopathological analysis, and the rest as SA. The effect size was slightly greater in rectal swab samples th

Gut mucosal microbiota and local intervertebral disc immunity: candidate circulating-cytokine-independent pathways informed by Mendelian randomization evidence.

Chronic low back pain secondary to intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the leading cause of disability across all musculoskeletal disorders worldwide. For decades, gut-disc crosstalk research has been framed almost exclusively by a systemic inflammatory paradigm, in which circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF-α, IL-1β) act as obligate mediators linking gut microbial dysbiosis to intervertebral disc degeneration. However, multi-cohort two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses have not identified significant mediation by the circulating inflammatory factors tested to da

Cichorium intybus L. polysaccharide improves growth performance and colonic barrier function in weaned piglets via the microbiota-HDCA-TGR5-Akt-NF-κB signaling axis: validation by FMT and in vitro models.

BACKGROUND: Weaning stress predisposes piglets to intestinal barrier disruption and gut dysbiosis, which contribute to post-weaning diarrhea and poor feed efficiency. Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) polysaccharide (CLP) is a fructan-rich prebiotic candidate; however, how CLP reshapes the microbiota-metabolite network to protect the colon remains unclear. METHODS: In Exp. 1, 96 weaned piglets [Duroc × (Landrace × Yorkshire), 28 days old, 8.03 ± 0.2 kg] were fed a basal diet (CON group) or a 0.5% CLP supplemented diet (CLP group). In Exp. 2, fecal microbiota from piglets were transplanted into d

Multi-omics analysis of soy isoflavone-induced responses in rumen fermentation, endocrine status and milk production in cows with varying milk yields.

BACKGROUND: Improving milk yield and feed efficiency is pivotal for climate-smart dairy systems, as rumen mediated fermentation governs energy and nitrogen utilization and thereby greenhouse-gas emission intensity. Soybean isoflavones (SIF) may modulate rumen fermentation, yet their effects on rumen function, microbiome features, host endocrine/metabolic responses, and lactation performance-particularly across cows with divergent milk-yield phenotypes-remain unclear. RESULTS: Fifty‑six lactating Holstein cows (28 high‑yield cows, HY; 28 low‑yield cows, LY) were divided into two categories by

Stability of equol production capability is associated with the diversity of the gut microbiota of the host: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Equol, a gut microbiota–derived metabolite of the soy isoflavone daidzein that acts mainly via estrogen receptor β, has been linked to several health benefits, including relief of menopausal symptoms and prevention of arteriosclerosis. However, little is known about how equol production capability changes over time and how these changes relate to the gut microbiota. METHODS: We analyzed data from 498 community-dwelling adults who participated annually in a health checkup between 2016 and 2019. Equol production was assessed each year using urinary equol and daidzein concentrations.

Gut health in broiler chickens fed a mixture of Hermetia illucens and Tenebrio molitor meals: does it have a key role in shaping bird performance?

Insect meals are promising sustainable protein sources for poultry, but comprehensive insights into their effects on gut health and growth performance are lacking. This study is the first to elucidate relationships between gut health parameters and performance in broilers fed Hermetia illucens (HI) and Tenebrio molitor (TM) meals at 5% or 10% inclusion levels, singly or in a 1:1 combination. A 37-day trial used 420 male Ross 308 chicks randomly allocated to seven treatments: control (C), HI5 (5% HI), HI10 (10% HI), TM5 (5% TM), TM10 (10% TM), MIX5 (5% MIX), and MIX10 (10% MIX). Composite fiber remodels gut microbiota and shows a trend of alleviating dyspepsia in adolescents with functional dyspepsia: a 16S rRNA pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent functional dyspepsia (FD) is highly prevalent and closely linked to intestinal microbiota imbalance. Dietary fiber exerts prebiotic effects by regulating gut microbiota, but targeted studies investigating whether composite fiber can modulate gut microbiota and alleviate dyspeptic symptoms in adolescent FD patients remain scarce. This pilot trial aimed to explore the gut microbial regulatory characteristics and symptomatic improvement trend of standardized composite fiber supplementation. METHODS: Thirty-two adolescents with FD were enrolled in a 28-day double-blind, pla

Integrative microbiome-methylome analysis links bacterial taxa to colorectal cancer histological subtypes.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) arises through distinct molecular and histological routes that may be shaped by interactions between the mucosa-associated microbiota and host epigenetic regulation. We analyzed paired tumor and adjacent non-tumor colorectal mucosa from CRC patients stratified by histological subtype (conventional vs serrated-pathway groups). Microbiota composition was profiled by Illumina sequencing, and host DNA methylation was assessed using genome-wide CpG arrays with targeted validation. Alpha diversity showed modest tumor-non-tumor differences, with variation by anatomical locatio
