Cryopreservation induced changes in avian sperm: Molecular and biochemical perspectives.

Cryopreservation is a pivotal tool for avian semen preservation but imposes detrimental effects on sperm viability and fertility. This review explores the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying cryopreservation-induced injuries in avian sperm, particularly in chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. Avian sperm exhibit a unique composition, including high polyunsaturated fatty acids, diverse proteins, and limited seminal plasma, rendering them vulnerable to oxidative stress and membrane damage during freezing and thawing. Cryopreservation leads to oxidative imbalance, lipid peroxidation,

Pancreatitis in wild zinc-poisoned waterfowl.

Four waterfowl were collected in the Tri-State Mining District (Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, USA), an area known to be contaminated with lead, cadmium and zinc (Zn). They were part of a larger group of 20 waterfowl collected to determine the exposure of birds to metal contamination at the site. The four waterfowl (three Branta canadensis, one Anas platyrhynchos) had mild to severe degenerative abnormalities of the exocrine pancreas, as well as tissue (pancreas, liver) concentrations of Zn that were considered toxic. The mildest condition was characterized by generalized atrophy of exocrine c

Identification of 2'-5'-Oligoadenylate Synthetase-Like Gene in Goose: Gene Structure, Expression Patterns, and Antiviral Activity Against Newcastle Disease Virus.

2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-like (OASL) is a kind of antiviral protein induced by interferons (IFNs), which plays an important role in the IFNs-mediated antiviral signaling pathway. In this study, we cloned and identified OASL in the Chinese goose for the first time. Goose 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-like (goOASL), including an ORF of 1527bp, encoding a protein of 508 amino acids. GoOASL protein contains 3 conserved motifs: nucleotidyltransferase (NTase) domain, 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS) domain, and 2 ubiquitin-like (UBL) repeats. The tissue distribution profile of goOASL i

Glucose-induced enhanced anti-oxidant activity inhibits apoptosis in goose fatty liver.

The development of mammalian nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is associated with oxidative stress, reduced mitochondrial function, and increased apoptosis in hepatocytes; however, the expressions of mitochondria-related genes are elevated in goose fatty liver, suggesting that there may be a unique protective mechanism in goose fatty liver. The aim of the study was to investigate this protective mechanism in terms of anti-oxidant capacity. Our data showed no substantial differences in the mRNA expression levels of the apoptosis-related genes including B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), BCL2-associated

Perspectives on Endogenous Opioids in Birds.

The present review summarizes the state of knowledge of endogenous opioids in birds. Endogenous opioid peptides acts in a neuromodulatory, hormonal and paracrine manner to mediate analgesic and other physiological functions. These peptides act through specific G-protein coupled receptors. Opioid receptors consist of a family of four closely-related proteins. The three types of opioid receptors are the mu (MOR or μ), delta (DOR or δ), and kappa (KOR or κ) opioid receptor proteins. The role of the fourth member of the opioid receptor family, the nociceptin or orphanin FQ receptor (ORL), is not c

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. Isolates from Clinical Cases of Waterfowl in Hungary Between 2022 and 2023.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating concern in both human and veterinary medicine, particularly in the poultry sector, where antibiotic usage is substantial. Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus aureus are important pathogens in waterfowl, causing systemic infections. However, there is a significant lack of data regarding their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in waterfowl populations. This study aims to address this gap by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of isolates from Hungarian waterfowl farms and evaluating resistance patterns in clin

Characterizing a newly identified avian herpesvirus-specific gene SORF3 in DPV and its roles in potential pathogenicity.

Duck plague virus (DPV) is a highly pathogenic avian herpesvirus that affects ducks, geese, and other anseriform poultry. The primary pathological changes observed in infected animals are mucosal, serosal, and systemic hemorrhages accompanied by exceptionally high fatality rates. While most DPV genes are conserved among herpesviruses, a small subset of genes, including the SORF3 gene, is unique to avian herpesviruses. To date, reports on the function and characteristics of the SORF3 gene are limited. In this study, the use of a polyclonal antibody against SORF3 demonstrated that this open read

Evaluation of immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a CpG-adjuvanted DNA vaccine against Tembusu virus.

Tembusu virus (TMUV) is a contagious pathogen of waterfowl including ducks and geese, which causes symptoms of high fever, loss of appetite and reduced egg production. The development of an effective vaccine is important for the prevention and control of the disease. We evaluated a DNA vaccine based on a recombinant pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) protein, using CpG oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) as an adjuvanted, and tested it for protection efficacy. BHK21 cells were transfected with the recombinant plasmid pVAX1-prM/E-CpG, and the antigenicity of the expressed protein was detected using an

Isolation, identification, and pathogenicity of a goose astrovirus 1 strain from goslings in Jiangsu province, China.

Goose astrovirus (GAstV) poses a large threat to the goose industry in China, with two genotypes: goose astrovirus genotype 1 (GAstV-1) and GAstV-2. GAstV-2 causes gout in goslings; however, understanding of GAstV-1 is limited. In this study, the GAstV-1 strain JY202323, was isolated from dead goslings, and its complete genome sequence was obtained using next-generation sequencing. Its whole genome was 7252 nucleotides in length, and its structure was similar to GAstV-1. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that GAstV-1 could be divided into two subgroups. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete genom

Bone lesions and intestinal barrier disruption caused by the isolated novel goose parvovirus infection in ducks.

Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) is attributed to Novel Goose Parvovirus (NGPV), which has inflicted significant economic losses on farming in China. Despite its significant impact, limited research has been conducted on the pathogenesis of this disease. The SD strain, a parvovirus variant isolated from ducks in Shandong province, was identified and characterized in our study. Phylogenetic analysis and sequence comparisons confirmed the classification of the SD strain as a member of NGPV. Based on this information, we established an animal model of SBDS by inoculating Cherry Valley duck

MapMyFlu: visualizing spatio-temporal relationships between related influenza sequences.

Understanding the molecular dynamics of viral spreading is crucial for anticipating the epidemiological implications of disease outbreaks. In the case of influenza, reassortments or point mutations affect the adaption to new hosts or resistance to anti-viral drugs and can determine whether a new strain will result in a pandemic infection or a less severe progression. To this end, tools integrating molecular information with epidemiological parameters are important to understand how molecular characteristics reflect in the infection dynamics. We present a new web tool, MapMyFlu, which allows to

Analysis of HA5 Hemagglutinins from Influenza A Viruses for Mass-Charge Patterns to Understand Antigenic Drift Related to Immune Escape.

Influenza A viruses remain a persistent global health threat due to their ability to mutate and evade host immune defences, a process largely driven by changes in hemagglutinin (HA). HA is a glycoprotein present on the surface of influenza virions and plays a critical role in viral entry into host cells by binding to cellular receptors. In this study, 23 HA5 protein sequences from various influenza viral strains collected from wild birds, seagulls, ducks, geese, and chickens, as well as from humans in mainland China during the period from 2023 to 2024, were analyzed for mass-charge patterns by
