Use of Ivermectin as Endoparasiticide in Tropical Cattle Herds Generates Resistance in Gastrointestinal Nematodes and the Tick Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The objective of the present study was to determine simultaneously the status of resistance against ivermectin (IVM) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini, 1888) ticks in 12 cattle farms where IVM was used for the control of GIN in the Mexican tropics. Six farms had frequent use of IVM (≥ 4 times per year) and six farms had low frequency of IVM use (1-2 times per year). The fecal egg count reduction test and the larval immersion test were used to determine the resistant status of GIN and R. microplus against IVM, respectively. The results indicated that 10

Anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in inland southern Queensland.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in ovine gastrointestinal nematodes in southern Queensland. DESIGN: An observational parasitological study using the faecal egg count reduction test. METHODS: Sheep farms (n = 20) enrolled in this study met the twin criteria of using worm testing for drench decisions and having concerns about anthelmintic efficacy. On each farm, 105 sheep were randomly allocated to one of six treatment groups or an untreated control group. Faecal samples were collected on day 0 and days 10-14 for worm egg counts and larval differentiation. Sin

Gastrointestinal nematodes and anthelmintic resistance in Danish goat herds.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in Danish goats and the presence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in 10 selected herds were investigated during April-September 2012. All Danish herds (n = 137) with 10 or more adult goats were invited to participate, and of these 27 herds met the inclusion criterion of more than 10 young kids never treated with anthelmintics. Questionnaire data on management were collected, and faecal samples from 252 kids were analysed by the McMaster technique. From all herds with a mean faecal egg count (FEC) above 300 eggs per g of faeces, pooled samples were st

Efficacy of an energy block containing Duddingtonia flagrans in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep.

The efficacy of the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans incorporated into an energy block was evaluated for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. Four naturally parasitised sheep with average nematode egg counts of 2,470 eggs per gram grazed by pairs on two similar parasite-free paddocks for 30 days. During that period, one pair of sheep (treated animals, T1) received an energy block containing chlamydospores of D. flagrans at a dose of 200,000 chlamydopores/kg bw/day, while the second pair (control animals, C1) received a fungus-free energy block. The animals in both

Efficacy of free and nanoencapsulated Eucalyptus citriodora essential oils on sheep gastrointestinal nematodes and toxicity for mice.

Herbal medicines with anthelmintic effects are alternatives for the sustainable control and prevention of disease caused by gastrointestinal parasites. The nanoencapsulation of essential oils has been proposed to enhance the absorption of their constituents and improve their efficacy. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of free and nanoencapsulated Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil (EcEO) on the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants in vitro and in vivo. Chitosan was used as a matrix for the formulation of a nanoemulsion. Chromatographic and physico-chemical a

Helminth Prevalence in European Deer with a Focus on Abomasal Nematodes and the Influence of Livestock Pasture Contact: A Meta-Analysis.

Deer are susceptible to infection with parasitic helminths, including species which are of increasing economic concern to the livestock industry due to anthelmintic drug resistance. This paper systematically collates helminth prevalence data from deer across Europe and explores patterns in relation to host and parasite species, as well as landscape factors. A livestock pasture contact index (LPCI) is developed to predict epidemiological overlap between deer and livestock, and hence to examine deer helminth fauna in the context of their surrounding environment. Fifty-eight studies comprising fa

Anthelmintic Activity, Cytotoxicity, and Phytochemical Screening of Plants Used to Treat Digestive Parasitosis of Small Ruminants in Benin (West Africa).

Medicinal plants continue to be used alone or in combination with veterinary drugs to treat animal ailments, especially in developing countries where livestock farmers often lack access to modern veterinary services and drugs. In addition, digestive parasitosis remain a major constraint for small ruminant livestock. The objective of this study was to screen the anthelmintic activity of the main plants used in the treatment of the digestive parasitosis of small ruminants in Benin. A total of 40 extracts were prepared using the successive maceration of 10 plants in four solvents of increasing po

A novel colloidal gold immunochromatography assay strip for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis japonica in domestic animals.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in China and an epidemiological survey has revealed that schistosome-infected bovines and goats are the main transmission sources for the disease. Therefore, development of a sensitive technique for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in domestic animals is necessary. METHOD: A novel colloidal gold immunochromatography assay (GICA) strip was developed for detecting Schistosoma japonicum in domestic animals. The colloidal gold was conjugated with recombinant streptococcal protein G (rSPG). As the test and control lines, the schisto

The neurons of class ALD mediate thermotaxis in the parasitic nematode, Strongyloides stercoralis.

Strongyloides stercoralis, a skin-penetrating nematode parasite of homeotherms, migrates to warmth. In nematodes, the amphids, anteriorly positioned, paired sensilla, each contain a bundle of sensory neurons. In the amphids of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a pair of neurons, each of which ends in a cluster of microvilli-like projections, are known to be the primary thermoreceptors, and have been named the finger cells (class AFD). A similar neuron pair in the amphids of the parasite Haemonchus contortus is also known to be thermosensory. Strongyloides stercoralis lacks finge

Parasite control in transhumant situations.

Transhumance is defined as 'seasonal moving of livestock to regions of different climate'. It is an integral part of livestock production in many parts of the world and takes several forms including moving of livestock from lowland to mountainous pastures or from dry to humid areas. The impact of transhumance on parasite populations of livestock and on parasite control is described, mainly using examples from Europe. The epidemiology of trichostrongylidosis of cattle, mainly caused by Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora, is characterised by prolonged survival of overwintered infective

Bafilomycin A1 is a promising therapeutic agent against T. spiralis infection by inhibiting the heme-transporting ATP6V0C/HRG-1 complex.

Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis), a zoonotic nematode that causes severe myositis and systemic morbidity, sustains chronic muscle parasitism through evolutionary adaptations; however, this globally prevalent disease lacks targeted therapies to disrupt chronic infection. Although the heme transport protein HRG-1 has been characterized as an intervention target in free-living species (e.g., Caenorhabditis elegans) and hematophagous parasites (e.g., Haemonchus contortus), the molecular machinery governing heme acquisition in the nonhematophagous parasite T. spiralis remains uncharacterized, and
