La Crosse virus (LACV) is a mosquito-transmitted member of the Bunyaviridae family that causes severe encephalitis in children. For the LACV nonstructural protein NSs, previous overexpression studies with mammalian cells had suggested two different functions, namely induction of apoptosis and inhibition of RNA interference (RNAi). Here, we demonstrate that mosquito cells persistently infected with LACV do not undergo apoptosis and mount a specific RNAi response. Recombinant viruses that either express (rLACV) or lack (rLACVdelNSs) the NSs gene similarly persisted and were prone to the RNAi-med

Dengue is the most rapidly expanding mosquito-borne viral disease worldwide. The worst year on record was 2024, with over 100 countries reporting 14.4 million cases and over 11,000 deaths. Since then, and up to August 2026, another 7.4 million cases and over 5000 deaths have been reported. The region of the Americas was impacted the most, followed by South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. Both the spread of dengue viruses (DENV) and their primary vectors, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are driven by several factors. Globalization has accelerated vector dispersal, particularly through in

Nitric oxide (NO), a small yet highly reactive gaseous molecule, has emerged as a crucial signaling component in plant biology, mainly in mediating its defense responses against biotic stress. Apart from mammalian role of NO, it also actively involved in the broad physiological, biochemical, and immunological processes in plants. NO is synthesized through a set of multiple enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways, whereupon it rapidly accumulates upon pathogen recognition. NO is implicated in plant immunity by working in synergy with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in triggering the hypersensitive r

Bluetongue (BT) is a non-contagious, insect-transmitted disease of wild and domestic ruminants caused by bluetongue virus (BTV). Effective control of BT disease relies on vaccination against prevalent or seasonal serotypes using live attenuated or inactivated vaccines. Limitations of these vaccines offer opportunities for improvement. Transient protein production in plants has evolved as a platform that offers a unique ability to express multiple antigens and complex protein assemblies. In this study, a trivalent virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate against BT was produced in Nicotiana

The housefly, Musca domestica, is a cosmopolitan pest of livestock and poultry and is of economic, veterinary, and public health importance. Populations of M. domestica are naturally infected with M. domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV), a nonoccluded double-stranded DNA virus that inhibits egg production in infected females and is characterized by salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) symptoms. MdSGHV has been detected in housefly samples from North America, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and the southwestern Pacific. In this study, houseflies were collected from various locations and

An orbivirus, JKT-7400, isolated from Culex mosquitoes in Indonesia, replicated to a high titer and induced cytopathic effects in Aedes albopictus cell cultures. The virus produced lethal sensitivity to carbon dioxide in Culex and Aedes mosquitoes as well as in Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies but was not the agent of the hereditary sensitivity to carbon dioxide previously described for Culex quinquefasciatus. When injected intravenously in high doses, JKT-7400 virus was lethal for rabbits, apparently without replicating to a significant extent. It was not pathogenic for adult mice inoculat

In Central Europe and large parts of Asia, tick-borne-encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis caused by the spirochetal bacterium of the genus Borrelia are among the most common diseases transmitted by the bite of a tick. When in regions with overlapping TBE virus and Borrelia endemicity, a tick bite causes the victim to become ill, it is important that appropriate serological and other laboratory investigations form part of the differential diagnosis. Account must always be taken of the fact that a tick bite may be followed by a double infection with the TBE virus and Borrelia. For this reaso

BACKGROUND: Zooprophylaxis, the diversion of disease carrying insects from humans to animals, may reduce transmission of diseases such as malaria. However, as the number of animals increases, improved availability of blood meals may increase mosquito survival, thereby countering the impact of diverting feeds.
METHODS: Computer simulation was used to examine the effects of animals on the transmission of human diseases by mosquitoes. Three scenarios were modelled: (1) endemic transmission, where the animals cannot be infected, eg. malaria; (2) epidemic transmission, where the animals cannot be

Nudiviruses (family Nudiviridae) are double-stranded DNA viruses that infect various insects and crustaceans. Among them, Heliothis zea nudivirus 1 (HzNV-1) represents the rare case of a lepidopteran nudivirus inducing a sexual pathology. Studies about molecular pathological dynamics of HzNV-1 or other nudiviruses are scarce. Hence, this study aims to provide a transcriptomic profile of HzNV-1 in an ovary-derived cell line of Helicoverpa zea (HZ-AM1), during early (3, 6 and 9 h post-infection) and advanced (12 and 24 h post-infection) stages of infection. Total RNA was extracted from both viru

The mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (L.) and Ae. albopictus Skuse are the major vectors of dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya viruses worldwide. Wolbachia, an endosymbiotic bacterium present in many insects, is being utilized in novel vector control strategies to manipulate mosquito life history and vector competence to curb virus transmission. Earlier studies have found that Wolbachia is commonly detected in Ae. albopictus but rarely detected in Ae. aegypti. In this study, we used a two-step PCR assay to detect Wolbachia in wild-collected samples of Ae. aegypti. The PCR products were sequen

Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) is a persistent plant pest that is able to vector pathogenic viruses. Natural plant resistance to thrips has become a prominent breeding target in commercial crops. The main reason for this is the shift toward banning key pesticides used for controlling thrips infestations and the lack of effective alternatives. Despite this urgent need for crop plants that are resistant, or tolerant, to thrips infestation, the toolbox for studying genetic resistance to this insect is still underdeveloped. Essentially, there is a lack of robust protocols for the screening an

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus belonging to the Togaviridae family, first isolated in Tanzania in 1952. The main vectors are mosquitoes from the Aedes species. Recently, the establishment of an envelope mutation increased infectivity for A. albopictus. CHIKV has recently re-emerged causing millions of infections in countries around the Indian Ocean characterized by climate conditions favourable to high vector density. Importation of human cases to European regions with high density of suitable arthropod vectors (such as A. albopictus) may trigger autochthonous o

The presence of bacteria in the midgut of mosquitoes antagonizes infectious agents, such as Dengue and Plasmodium, acting as a negative factor in the vectorial competence of the mosquito. Therefore, knowledge of the molecular mechanisms involved in the control of midgut microbiota could help in the development of new tools to reduce transmission. We hypothesized that toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by epithelial cells control bacterial growth in the midgut of Aedes aegypti, the vector of Yellow fever and Dengue viruses. We show that ROS are continuously present in the midgut of s

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a member of the Gammaherpesvirus family, primarily infects B lymphocytes and is responsible for a number of lymphoproliferative diseases. The molecular genetics of the assembly pathway and high-resolution structural analysis of the capsid have not been determined for this lymphocryptovirus. As a first step in studying EBV capsid assembly, the baculovirus expression vector (BEV) system was used to express the capsid shell proteins BcLF1 (major capsid protein), BORF1 (triplex protein), BDLF1 (triplex protein), and BFRF3 (small capsid protein); the internal scaffold prot

Based on a review of the literature on human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8) and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and on the distribution of KS in Italy (Veneto region particularly), we hypothesize that the bite of bloodsucking arthropods is a cofactor in the seroconversion to HHV8 positivity and probably in the pathogenesis of KS. The bloodsucking arthropod releases with saliva powerful antihaemostatics and immunomodulators which may favour the replication and the establishment of the pathogen. Transmission would depend on the close contact of the child with a seropositive mother (or relatives) whose infective sal

Among over 40 mammal species threatened by the filling of a hydroelectric dam reservoir in French Guiana, three species of primates have been translocated, comprising 124 red howler monkeys, six white-faced sakis, and 95 golden-handed tamarins. Health status of the animals was evaluated by direct physical examination and by hematological, biochemical, virological, and parasitological surveys of collected blood. The physical condition of the howlers was slightly worse toward the end of the capture period, but that of sakis and tamarins remained satisfactory. Several ectoparasites (ticks, larvae

Whiteflies pose a major threat to crops worldwide, primarily because they transmit begomoviruses with which they have evolved intricate mutualistic relationships. The mutualisms are known to exacerbate whitefly invasions and drive widespread plant virus pandemics. Yet, certain plant genotypes are able to resist both the whiteflies and the viruses and a good understanding of the underlying mechanisms could help to develop more resistant varieties. Here, we show that the viruliferous whitefly Bemisia tabaci induces an early and strong release of the sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene in cultivated to

BACKGROUND: Dengue is not endemic in Australia and outbreaks occur occasionally after viraemic travellers visit parts of Queensland where dengue vectors are prevalent. Prior to 2016, Aedes aegypti was the primary vector of dengue in Australia. However, several dengue outbreaks have occurred more recently on islands in the Torres Strait region where Ae. aegypti has been displaced by Aedes albopictus following its first detection in the islands in 2005.
METHODS: In November 2024, adult female Ae. albopictus were collected during a dengue outbreak on Masig Island where Ae. aegypti is now absent

The biopesticide industry in India is undergoing rapid change, reflecting increased global trade in agricultural commodities, a changing regulatory environment and evolving consumer preferences. Currently biopesticides comprise ≈ 5% of the Indian pesticide market, with at least 15 microbial species and 970 microbial formulations registered through the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIBRC). As of 2017, over 200 products based on entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, Metarhizium anisopliae s.l., Lecanicillium lecanii and Hirsutella thompsonii) and n
