PURPOSE: Non-obstructive urinary retention (NOUR) is the inability to empty the bladder with no physical obstruction to urine flow. It can occur as a result of neurological disorders or be idiopathic. In younger women, it may be caused by Fowler's syndrome (FS), a rare disorder in which the urethral sphincter fails to relax to allow urine to pass normally. This study covers both idiopathic NOUR and FS. Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) has been introduced as an effective option for patients with NOUR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients (aged 17 to 61 years) suffering from refractory NOUR wh

PURPOSE: Urinary control after definitive repair of a cloacal anomaly is difficult to achieve. The present report aims to describe the clinical course of urinary control, and the need for the management of bladder dysfunction after reconstruction.
METHODS: The present consecutive series consisted of 11 girls who underwent definitive repair of cloacal anomalies over a period of 11 years. Eight patients were associated with hydrocolpos. Radiological examination included a plain X-ray radiograph of the lumbosacral spine and a voiding cystourethrography with or without a urodynamic study.

PURPOSE: Increased time after spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with a migration to bladder managements with higher morbidity such as indwelling catheter (IDC). Still, it is unclear how this affects bladder-related quality of life (QoL). We hypothesized that time from injury (TFI) would be associated with changes in bladder management, symptoms and satisfaction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of time-related changes in patient-reported bladder management, symptoms and satisfaction using the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group SCI Registry. Outcomes included Neurogenic Blad

AIM: In certain cases, a patient's anxiety, fear, or misconceptions can represent significant obstacles to the learning of Clean Intermittent Self Catheterization (CISC), and little is known about these psychological barriers. The aim of the present study is thus to construct and validate an "Intermittent Catheterization Acceptance Test (I-CAT)" to evaluate the psychological acceptance of CISC.
METHODS: A study was carried out in nine neuro-rehabilitation and urology departments in French university hospitals. Fifty-five items were identified, following a comprehensive review of the literatur

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether a poor response and adverse events (voiding dysfunction and urinary tract infection) were predictable for first time botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injections in a patient cohort of refractory idiopathic overactive bladder with detrusor overactivity.
METHODS: Patients who received BTX-A injections for the first time between the dates of March 2004-August 2017 were analyzed in this single center study. Urogenital Distress Inventory short form (UDI-6) questionnaires were collected both preinjection and postinjection prospectively. A poor response was defined as a decr

BACKGROUND: Intermittent catheterisation is the standard treatment for incomplete bladder emptying in spinal cord injuries (SCI), but urinary tract infections (UTI) remain a common and costly complication. Hydrophilic-coated catheters have been shown to decrease infection rates; however, they are more expensive compared to uncoated catheters. The aim was to model the cost-effectiveness of hydrophilic-coated catheters (HCIC) compared to uncoated catheters in New Zealand (NZ) patients with traumatic SCI who intermittently catheterise.
METHODS: A probabilistic economic Markov model adapted to NZ

PURPOSE: We created and validated the new pencil and paper test, which allows assessment of the ability of patients with a neurological disorder to practice clean intermittent self-catheterization.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed a simple test including common gestures mimicking the usual maneuvers needed during clean intermittent self-catheterization, and involving the same cognitive and physical resources needed for this technique. We evaluated the test in 118 patients with a neurological condition. Instruments needed to perform the pencil and paper test are limited to a sheet of paper

AIMS: Integrating regular intermittent catheterization (IC) into daily life is essential for good medical outcomes in patients with neurogenic bladders. The goal is to identify long-term IC-related barriers, or difficulties in Korean patients with spinal dysraphism and their parents.
METHODS: The data were prospectively collected using questionnaires from spinal dysraphism patients from two sources: an online community, and those visiting the outpatient clinic of Seoul National university hospital. The questions included were barriers in general and school life, respectively. Also, an open qu

The importance of prevention in late hematogenous infection is well understood but, because responsibility lies with general practitioners and other specialists, the orthopedic surgeon is usually not much interested. In both our and other countries, discussions are taking place on whether and to what extent antibiotic prevention should be carried out. Antibiotic prophylaxis of hematogenous infection is not indicated for all patients with joint arthroplasty, but only for a limited, defined group of patients at high risk. In these, however, the present state of knowledge suggests that prevention

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) in the United States is the most common bacterial infection, and urine cultures often make up the largest portion of workload for a hospital-based microbiology laboratory. Appropriately managing the factors affecting the preanalytic phase of urine culture contributes significantly to the generation of meaningful culture results that ultimately affect patient diagnosis and management. Urine culture contamination can be reduced with proper techniques for urine collection, preservation, storage, and transport, the major factors affecting the preanalytic p

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) is a chronic condition that can adversely impact child and family health related quality of life (HRQOL). Surprisingly, to date, the impact of this condition on the QOL of children with PUV has not been studied. Thus, our aim is to evaluate this important aspect of care using validated questionnaires in our institutional PUV clinic.
METHODS: From December 2022 to January 2024, the PedsQL Inventory and associated family impact module was distributed in our PUV clinic. Higher scores reflect better HRQoL and less impact on family. Children >8 years o

BACKGROUND: Urinary drainage for posterior urethral valves can be achieved with valve ablation (VA) or diversion by vesicostomy (VES) or cutaneous ureterostomy (CU). The effect of these interventions on long-term bladder function remains debated, and voiding symptomatology after VES or CU reversal has been poorly characterized.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and scope of physician treatment patterns as a surrogate for retention or incontinence symptomatology among PUV patients undergoing primary VA or diversion by VES/CU and determine rates of progression
