Exploring Correlations between Headaches and Refractive Errors in an Optometry Clinic Sample.

BACKGROUND & AIM: The optometrist is often one of the professionals patients consult when they have headaches. The limitations inherent in previous studies on the topic limit the utilization of their findings. Therefore, the aim of conducting the present study was to explore correlations between headache and refractive errors in a clinical setting using extended classification criteria. METHODS: The study design was cross-sectional, and sample comprised (headache group = 1062; non-headache group = 1095) participants aged 10-40 years who attended an optometry practice. During case-history taki

Strabismus Surgery for Psychosocial Reasons-A Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Strabismus surgery may be undertaken for visual benefit, to improve or eliminate diplopia symptoms, or to restore or improve binocular single vision (BSV). In patients without visual symptoms or expected visual benefit, strabismus surgery may still be undertaken if the presence of strabismus causes the patient psychosocial symptoms. To evaluate strabismus surgery undertaken for psychosocial reasons, evidence of postoperative outcomes in this specific cohort is needed. METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was conducted (1946-2023) to identify evidence where postoperativ

Clinical Utility of 'Peekaboo Vision' Application for Measuring Grating Acuity in Children with Down Syndrome.

Peekaboo Vision is an iPad grating acuity app built with typically developing children in mind. Given the ease of using this app in the pediatric age group, this study determined its clinical utility in children with Down syndrome. Two groups of participants (children with Down syndrome and age-matched controls) were included. Presenting binocular grating acuity was measured using Peekaboo Vision and Teller acuity cards II in random order. Parents' feedback about their child's engagement and time taken to complete each test was documented. Thirty-seven children with Down syndrome (males = 23;

The Impact of Diplopia on Reading.

AIM: To compare the effect of induced vertical diplopia (small and large separation) on reading speed and accuracy. METHODS: The Radner Reading Chart (RRC) was used to measure reading speed (correct words per minute (wpm)) and accuracy (percentage). Accuracy was measured using two different methods: 'accuracy-omission' where only the omission of a word reduced the score, and 'accuracy-addition and omission' where any error reduced the score. Three viewing conditions were created using Fresnel prisms on plano glasses: a control condition without diplopia (6 prism dioptres (Δ) base up (BU) over

Opinions on Amblyopia Treatment in Microtropia - A Questionnaire Study of Orthoptists in Scandinavia.

BACKGROUND: Microtropia is a small angle strabismus of less than or equal to ten prism diopters. It often co-exists with anisometropia, and patients may require amblyopia treatment. Diplopia following amblyopia treatment is considered rare, but older literature can advise caution when treating amblyopia in microtropia. This study aimed to explore orthoptists' opinions on amblyopia treatment in microtropia. METHODS: Orthoptists working in Scandinavia were invited to complete an online questionnaire regarding their views on amblyopia treatment. They were presented with three different clinical
