Oral microbiome contribution in colorectal carcinogenesis: polymicrobial interactions and virulence determinants.

The contribution of the microbiome to sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) has traditionally been interpreted through the detection of individual tumor-enriched taxa or isolated virulence factors. However, accumulating evidence indicates that CRC-associated microorganisms often act as structured polymicrobial consortia rather than as independent agents. This review proposes an expanded ecological framework for understanding the role of oral taxa in colorectal carcinogenesis. Oral bacteria, including genera Fusobacterium, Parvimonas, Peptostreptococcus, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, Streptococcus, and

Caries influences the composition of oral microorganisms in male children with ASD.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder, with growing evidence suggesting that certain oral microorganisms may worsen ASD symptoms. Caries is closely linked to the nervous system and influences the composition of oral microorganisms. Therefore, when studying the oral microbial composition in ASD, the effects of caries must be excluded to accurately identify potential oral causative agents of ASD. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 30 children diagnosed with ASD and 34 typically developing (TD) control children, both with and without

Mixed vaginal infection status in women infected with Trichomonas vaginalis: comparison of microscopy method and metagenomic sequencing analysis.

Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infection is a common non-viral sexually transmitted infection, often combined with mixed vaginal infections. These mixed infections worsen inflammation, disrupt vaginal microbiota, and affect treatment. Currently, TV and its mixed infections are mainly diagnosed by wet mount microscopy, which has low sensitivity and cannot identify complex microbes well. This study compared microscopy with metagenomic sequencing to explore vaginal microbiota changes and improve diagnosis of TV-related mixed infections. We enrolled 30 participants: 20 TV-infected patients (diagnosed

Target next-generation sequencing for the accurate diagnosis of Parvimonas micra lung abscess: a case series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Parvimonas micra (P. micra) has been identified as a pathogen capable of causing lung abscesses; however, its identification poses challenges due to the specialized culture conditions for anaerobic bacterial isolation. Only a few cases of lung abscesses caused by P. micra infection have been reported. Therefore, we describe the clinical characteristics of lung abscesses due to P. micra based on our case series. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on eight patients who were diagnosed with lung abscesses attributed to P. micra. Detection of P. micra was accomplished thro

Persistent enrichment of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella in oral and nasal communities during long-term starvation.

BACKGROUND: The human oral and nasal cavities can act as reservoirs for opportunistic pathogens capable of causing acute infection. These microbes asymptomatically colonize the human oral and nasal cavities which facilitates transmission within human populations via the environment, and they routinely possess clinically significant antibiotic resistance genes. Among these opportunistic pathogens, the Klebsiella genus stands out as a notable example, with its members frequently linked to nosocomial infections and multidrug resistance. As with many colonizing opportunistic pathogens, the essenti

The duodenal mucosa associated microbiome, visceral sensory function, immune activation and psychological comorbidities in functional gastrointestinal disorders with and without self-reported non-celiac wheat sensitivity.

Frequently, patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) report intolerance of wheat products. We compared gastrointestinal symptoms, sensory function, psychiatric comorbidities, gut-homing immune cells, and duodenal mucosa-associated microbiome (d-MAM) in FGID patients and controls with and without self-reported wheat sensitivity (SR-NCWS). We recruited 40 FGID patients and 20 controls referred by GPs for treatment. Gastrointestinal/extraintestinal symptoms, visceral sensory function, psychological comorbidities, and SR-NCWS were assessed in a standardized approach. Peripheral

Tongue Coating Bacteria as a Potential Stable Biomarker for Gastric Cancer Independent of Lifestyle.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers, and the noninvasive diagnostic methods for monitoring GC are still lacking. Growing evidence shows that human microbiota has potential value for identifying digestive diseases. AIMS: The present study aimed to explore the association of the tongue coating microbiota with the serum metabolic features and inflammatory cytokines in GC patients and seek a potential, noninvasive biomarker for diagnosing GC. METHODS: The tongue coating microbiota was profiled by 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes sequencing technology in the original popu

Prevalence of different types of vaginitis in Pap-smear samples from the Women's Clinic of Firouzabadi Hospital in Tehran 2019 to 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Vaginitis is one of the most common causes of referrals to gynecologists and obstetricians. It is characterized by symptoms such as itching, vaginal discharge, and redness. The three main causes of vaginitis are bacteria, various species of yeast and the protozoan Trichomonas (T.) vaginalis. Candida albicans has been considered as the main cause of vulvovaginitis in different regions of the world. The most common types of anaerobic bacteria in bacterial vaginitis are Gardnerella vaginalis, Bacteroidetes, Prevotella and Peptostreptococcus spp. In Iran to date, few population-based

[Two cases of Bartholin's gland abscesses caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae].

Most of Bartholin's gland abscesses have been thought to be caused by microorganisms found in opportunistic infections. However, we have encountered two very interesting cases of Bartholin's gland abscesses caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, two major pathogens of respiratory tract infections. In the first case, since abscess formation was not observed due to disintegration, cefdinir (CFDN), 300 mg/day, t.i.d. for 5 days was administered. The treatment improved clinical symptoms, but relapse occurred 3 days after the administration was discontinued. Microbiological

Statistical theory for protein combinatorial libraries. Packing interactions, backbone flexibility, and the sequence variability of a main-chain structure.

Combinatorial experiments provide new ways to probe the determinants of protein folding and to identify novel folding amino acid sequences. These types of experiments, however, are complicated both by enormous conformational complexity and by large numbers of possible sequences. Therefore, a quantitative computational theory would be helpful in designing and interpreting these types of experiment. Here, we present and apply a statistically based, computational approach for identifying the properties of sequences compatible with a given main-chain structure. Protein side-chain conformations are
