Impact and centrality of attention dysregulation on cognition, anxiety, and low mood in adolescents.

Functional impairments in cognition are frequently thought to be a feature of individuals with depression or anxiety. However, documented impairments are both broad and inconsistent, with little known about when they emerge, whether they are causes or effects of affective symptoms, or whether specific cognitive systems are implicated. Here, we show, in the adolescent ABCD cohort (N = 11,876), that attention dysregulation is a robust factor underlying wide-ranging cognitive task impairments seen in adolescents with moderate to severe anxiety or low mood. We stratified individuals high in DSM-or

The Associations of Common Psychological Problems With Mental Disorders Among College Students.

Psychological problems like procrastination, perfectionism, low self-esteem, test anxiety and stress are common among college students. There are evidence-based interventions available for these problems that not only have direct effects on these problems, but also indirect effects on mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. Targeting these psychological problems may offer new opportunities to prevent and treat mental disorders in a way that is less stigmatizing to students. In this study we examined the association of five psychological problems with five common mental disor

Do psychological assessment tools predict spinal cord stimulation treatment outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether psychological variables independently predict spinal cord stimulation success or instead moderate pain-response dynamics over time. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included 217 patients undergoing SCS implantation, with available follow-up in 153 at 6 months and 155 at 12 months. Treatment success was defined as a ≥30% reduction in Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain from baseline. Baseline psychological measures included Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) categories (Minimal/Mild/Moderate/Severe), Pain Disability Index (PDI) categories (Low/High), and 10 binary Pe

Neuropsychological profile and clinical benefits of multimodal interventions in a child with ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder within the context of intellectual giftedness: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, particular interest has been directed toward the topic of intellectual giftedness. An IQ above 130, typically assessed with standardized cognitive scales, is a widely recognized criterion for giftedness. Gifted children often face emotional and socio-relational difficulties, particularly anxiety, due to perfectionism and high-performance pressures. Co-occurring neurodevelopmental disorders like Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder complicate their adaptation in various life contexts. This is the case of twice

A cognitive behavioural intervention for low self-esteem in young people who have experienced stigma, prejudice, or discrimination: An uncontrolled acceptability and feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: Stigma has been found to be associated with lower self-esteem, which increases the risk of difficulties across life domains including vulnerability to mental health problems. There are no previous studies of interventions for people experiencing low self-esteem in the context of different stigmatized characteristics. This study evaluated feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of an intervention targeting low self-esteem in stigmatized people aged 16-24 years. DESIGN: An uncontrolled study with repeated measures. METHOD: People with a range of stigmatized characteris

Impact of comorbid borderline personality disorder on the outcome of inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa: a retrospective chart review.

BACKGROUND: Data on patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and comorbid Borderline personality disorder (AN+BPD) are scarce. Therefore, we investigated (1) whether patients with AN and AN+BPD differ in characteristics related to admission to, discharge from, and course of specialized inpatient eating disorder treatment and (2) how comorbid BPD affects treatment outcome. METHOD: One-thousand one-hundred and sixty inpatients with AN (97.2% female, 5.9% with comorbid BPD; mean age = 26.15, SD = 9.41) were administered the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the Eating Disorder Inventory 2 (EDI-2), and t

Can Brief, Daily Training Using a Mobile App Help Change Maladaptive Beliefs? Crossover Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling condition with a wide variety of clinical presentations including contamination fears, fear of harm, and relationship-related obsessions. Cognitive behavioral models of OCD suggest that OC symptoms result from catastrophic misinterpretations of commonly occurring intrusive experiences and associated dysfunctional strategies used to manage them. OCD-related maladaptive beliefs including inflated responsibility, importance and control of thoughts, perfectionism, and intolerance for uncertainty increase the likelihood of such misinter

Neurotransmitter and imaging studies in anorexia nervosa: new targets for treatment.

Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa are disorders of unknown etiology that invariably begin during adolescence and near in time to puberty in young women. These disorders are associated with aberrant eating behaviors, body image distortions, impulse and mood disturbances, as well as characteristic temperament and personality traits. It is well known that malnutrition produces changes in neuroendocrine function. More recently, disturbances in neuronal systems have been found to play a role in the modulation of feeding, mood, and impulse control. These neuronal systems include neuropeptides (CRH, opioi

Compassionate mind training as school-based social and emotional learning: extension to younger pupils and effects of programme dosage.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from primary/elementary to high-school education is associated with increased mental health difficulties, especially anxiety. Previously, compassionate mind training (CMT) has been demonstrated to stem anxiety increases and improve prosocial behaviours in children aged 11-12. We extended this research by exploring CMT training effects via two further studies: (i) younger children aged 10-11, and (ii) a shortened/compacted delivery length with children aged 11-12. METHOD: We used a mixed methods convergent parallel approach, collecting both quantitative and qualita

Developing a mindfulness program for pre-clinical medical students in Indonesia: a mixed-methods study on suitability and appropriateness.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Medical students experience high rates of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, burnout, and suicidality, due to rigorous academic demands. Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI) have demonstrated small-to-moderate effectiveness in reducing stress and improving well-being, yet culturally adapted and developmentally appropriate programs for Indonesian medical students remain limited. This study aims to develop and evaluate the Mindfulness Program for Pre-Clinical Medical Students in Indonesia (MPPMS-I) to determine its feasibility, acceptability, and suitabili

Using Music to Promote Hong Kong Young People's Emotion Regulation and Reduce Their Mood Symptoms and Loneliness: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mental health needs in the community surged during the pandemic, with concerning reports of increased negative mood symptoms among youth. At the same time, preventive psychoeducational interventions were insufficient within frontline youth mental health services in Hong Kong, and research specifically addressing youth loneliness remained limited on an international scale. Given the association between loneliness and other mental health symptoms, psychoeducational programs that empower adolescents to cope with emotions may help address both the research gap and local demand. As such

Efficacy of a transdiagnostic Internet prevention approach in adolescents (EMPATIA study): study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Most mental disorders have their onset in adolescence. Preventive interventions during this period are important; however, help-seeking behavior is generally poor in this age group resulting in low treatment rates. Internet interventions are expected to be an effective, low-threshold, and scalable approach to overcome barriers to help-seeking, particularly for individuals experiencing subclinical symptoms. Internet-delivered indicated prevention seems promising as it targets individuals with minimal symptoms of mental disorders who might need care but are not help-seeking yet. Prev

Effectiveness of enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) for eating disorders: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: While eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) is the most common eating disorder (ED) diagnosis in routine clinical practice, no specific treatment methods for this diagnosis have yet been developed and studied. Enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) has been described and put to the test as a transdiagnostic treatment protocol for all EDs, including EDNOS. Initial research in the UK suggests that CBT-E is more effective for EDs, especially bulimia nervosa (BN) and EDNOS, than the earlier version of CBT. These positive results of CBT-E have to be replicated in more d

Neurobiology of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are related disorders of unknown etiology that most commonly begin during adolescence in women. AN and BN have unique and puzzling symptoms, such as restricted eating or binge-purge behaviors, body image distortions, denial of emaciation, and resistance to treatment. These are often chronic and relapsing disorders, and AN has the highest death rate of any psychiatric disorder. The lack of understanding of the pathogenesis of this illness has hindered the development of effective interventions, particularly for AN. Individuals with AN and BN are co

[Psychotherapy prognostic factors for personality disorders (PD) treatment: The role of self-reported questionnaires].

Objectives Dropout rates in psychotherapy are known to be high in patients with personality disorders (PD; ranging from 25% and 64% for Borderline PD). Faced with this observation, the Treatment Attrition-Retention Scale for Personality Disorders (TARS-PD; Gamache et coll., 2017) was developed to precisely identify patients with PD at high risk of abandoning therapy based on 15 criteria, regrouped in 5 factors: Pathological Narcissism, Antisocial/Psychopathy, Secondary Gain, Low Motivation, and Cluster A Features. However, we have limited knowledge about the relevance of self-reported question

Data-driven subtypes of mild cognitive impairment and their modifiable determinants: latent profile analysis of the BIOCIS cohort.

BACKGROUND: "Dry mouth" syndrome (chronic hyposalivation) can be caused by a number of pathophysiological conditions such as acute and chronic stress exposure, abnormal body weight (both too high and too low ones), eating disorders (such as anorexia nervosa), metabolic syndrome(s), Sjögren's and Sicca syndromes, drugs and head/neck radiotherapy application. In turn, the chronic hyposalivation as a suboptimal health condition significantly reduces quality of life, may indicate a systemic dehydration, provokes and contributes to a number of pathologies such as a strongly compromised protection o
