Voice Emotion Recognition by Mandarin-Speaking Children with Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional expressions are very important in social interactions. Children with cochlear implants can have voice emotion recognition deficits due to device limitations. Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants may face greater challenges than those speaking nontonal languages; the pitch information is not well preserved in cochlear implants, and such children could benefit from child-directed speech, which carries more exaggerated distinctive acoustic cues for different emotions. This study investigated voice emotion recognition, using both adult-directed and child-directed

Decoding Gender in Cough Sounds: A Transformer-Based Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Various components of speech, such as pitch, volume, and resonance, influence gender perception, but little is known about gender differences in non-speech upper airway sounds such as cough. This gap has implications for gender-affirming voice care, as coughs are harder to modulate. We aimed to explore how cough acoustics differ by gender using a transformer model with self-attention to identify salient cough features for gender classification. METHODS: We analyzed 327 cough recordings (154 male, 173 female) from the Coswara dataset, using a 70/15/15 split for model training, valid

Sound enrichment therapy is more effective for long-term tinnitus suppression with 10 Hz amplitude modulation.

Tinnitus is a complex clinical condition that lacks a well-established treatment because its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the long-term efficacy of a personalized 10 Hz amplitude-modulated (AM) sound enrichment protocol in comparison with an unmodulated (UM) protocol. Seventy-one participants with chronic tonal tinnitus were assigned to either a modulated group (MG, n = 27), which underwent a 10 Hz AM sound complex, or an unmodulated group (UMG, n = 44), which underwent an unmodulated sound complex. Stimuli were individually customized by spectrally s

Musical Interval Perception With a Cochlear Implant Alone and With a Contralateral Normal Hearing Ear.

Music through a cochlear implant (CI) is described as out-of-tune, suggesting that musical intervals are not accurately provided by a CI. One potential reason is that pitch may be insufficiently conveyed to provide reliable intervals. Another potential reason is that the size of intervals is distorted through a CI as they would be when produced by a mistuned piano. To measure intervals through a CI, listeners selected prerecorded vowels with different fundamental frequencies to represent each note in Happy Birthday. Each listener had contralateral normal hearing (NH); repeating the experiment

Relationship between selected orientation rest frame, circular vection and space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial orientation and motion perception disturbances occur in 70-80% of astronauts. People select "rest frames" to create the subjective sense of spatial orientation. In microgravity, the astronaut's rest frame may be based on visual scene polarity cues and on the internal head and body z axis (vertical body axis). The data reported here address the following question: Can an astronaut's orientation rest frame be related and described by other variables including circular vection response latencies and space motion sickness? The astronaut's microgravity spatia

Frequency-dependent fine structure in the frequency-following response: The byproduct of multiple generators.

The frequency-following response (FFR) is an auditory-evoked response recorded at the scalp that captures the spectrotemporal properties of tonal stimuli. Previous investigations report that the amplitude of the FFR fluctuates as a function of stimulus frequency, a phenomenon thought to reflect multiple neural generators phase-locking to the stimulus with different response latencies. When phase-locked responses are offset by different latencies, constructive and destructive phase interferences emerge in the volume-conducted signals, culminating in an attenuation or amplification of the scalp-

Auditory processing and hallucinations in schizophrenia.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether deficits in auditory processing are associated with auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia. It was hypothesised that individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia would demonstrate deficits in processing the spectral and temporal aspects of sound and that such deficits would be more pronounced in patients with a history of auditory hallucinations (hallucinators) than those without such a history (non-hallucinators). A community sample meeting clinical criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (19 hallucinators, 15 no

Does repeated hyperbaric exposure to 4 atmosphere absolute cause hearing impairment? Study in Guinea pigs and clinical incidences.

HYPOTHESIS: Direct pressure applied on the inner ear cannot induce hearing loss. BACKGROUND: Three possible causes have been described in the literature for inner ear permanent lesions during scuba diving: pressure imbalance between the middle ear and the external ear, appearance of microbubbles in the internal ear, and direct effect of pressure on the inner ear. We seek to determine whether this last factor can be involved. METHODS: We submitted two groups of guinea pigs previously implanted with an electrode in the round window to a protocol of air diving in a hyperbaric chamber. Eardrums

Temporal modulation transfer functions obtained using sinusoidal carriers with normally hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

Temporal modulation transfer functions were obtained using sinusoidal carriers for four normally hearing subjects and three subjects with mild to moderate cochlear hearing loss. Carrier frequencies were 1000, 2000 and 5000 Hz, and modulation frequencies ranged from 10 to 640 Hz in one-octave steps. The normally hearing subjects were tested using levels of 30 and 80 dB SPL. For the higher level, modulation detection thresholds varied only slightly with modulation frequency for frequencies up to 80 Hz, but decreased for high modulation frequencies. The decrease can be attributed to the detection

Antimasking effects of the olivocochlear reflex. I. Enhancement of compound action potentials to masked tones.

1. The effects of olivocochlear (OC) feedback on signal processing in the cochlea were studied by comparing responses seen with and without a contralateral noise or by comparing responses seen before and after cutting the OC bundle (OCB). Adding and subtracting a contralateral noise is a convenient, reversible way of changing the level of OC feedback; however, it fully reveals only the contribution of the contralaterally responsive efferent fibers. Cutting the OCB can reveal the full contribution of all fibers in the OCB; however, the manipulation can only be performed once per experiment. 2.

Auditory-nerve responses predict pitch attributes related to musical consonance-dissonance for normal and impaired hearing.

Human listeners prefer consonant over dissonant musical intervals and the perceived contrast between these classes is reduced with cochlear hearing loss. Population-level activity of normal and impaired model auditory-nerve (AN) fibers was examined to determine (1) if peripheral auditory neurons exhibit correlates of consonance and dissonance and (2) if the reduced perceptual difference between these qualities observed for hearing-impaired listeners can be explained by impaired AN responses. In addition, acoustical correlates of consonance-dissonance were also explored including periodicity an

Cerebrospinal fluid loss and threshold changes. 1. Hearing loss in the contralateral ear after operation for acoustic neuroma: an analysis of the incidence, time course, frequency range, size and pathophysiological considerations.

In a prospective study, 60 patients who underwent surgery for unilateral acoustic neuromas had the hearing on the contralateral ear tested before and several times after surgery. In 40 patients, a threshold increase was found during the following 9 days. The changes were greatest in the low frequencies immediately after surgery, but after 1 week the treble also became involved. After 3 months, the hearing was normalized. The elder patients more than 50 years of age were more often affected, whereas sex, tumor size, surgical approach or duration of surgery had no influence. The pathophysiologic

Disrupted auditory N1, theta power and coherence suppression to willed speech in people with schizophrenia.

The phenomenon of sensory self-suppression - also known as sensory attenuation - occurs when a person generates a perceptible stimulus (such as a sound) by performing an action (such as speaking). The sensorimotor control system is thought to actively predict and then suppress the vocal sound in the course of speaking, resulting in lowered cortical responsiveness when speaking than when passively listening to an identical sound. It has been hypothesized that auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia result from a reduction in self-suppression due to a disruption of predictive mechanisms require

Unconditioned and conditioned muscular responses in patients with chronic back pain and chronic tension-type headaches and in healthy controls.

Muscular tension is assigned an important role in the development and maintenance of chronic pain syndromes. It is seen as a psychophysiological correlate of learned fear and avoidance behavior. Basic theoretical models emphasize classical conditioning of muscular responses as a mechanism of pain chronification. However, the empirical basis for this field is very small. Our aim was to investigate muscular factors in relation to unconditioned and conditioned pain stimuli. An experimental study was conducted using a differential classical conditioning paradigm with 18 patients with chronic back

On Balancing Sharpness of Excitation Patterns, Loudness, and Potential Effects on Speech Perception with Cochlear-Implant Current-Focussing Strategies.

PURPOSE: Cochlear implant (CI) users struggle to understand speech under noisy conditions. This has long been attributed to channel interactions: a given neuron not only responds to electrical stimulation from the closest electrode but also is sensitive to stimulation from electrodes located further away. Shaping the stimulation voltage into a very sharp profile (e.g. using tripolar instead of the more common monopolar stimulation) has been proposed as a solution, only with limited success. We argue this is due to several factors: the strong correlation between envelopes of adjacent CI channel

The sound sensation of a pure tone in cochlear implant recipients with single-sided deafness.

Ten cochlear implant (CI) users with single-sided deafness were asked to vary the parameters of an acoustic sound played to their contralateral ear to characterize the perception evoked by a pure tone played through the direct audio input of their CI. Two frequencies, centered on an apical and a medial electrode, were tested. In six subjects, the electrode positions were estimated on CT scans. The study was divided in 3 experiments in which the parameters of the acoustic sound varied. The listeners had to vary the frequency of a pure tone (Exp.1), the center frequency and the bandwidth of a fi
