Acceptability and usefulness of the EORTC 'Write In three Symptoms/Problems' (WISP): a brief open-ended instrument for symptom assessment in cancer patients.

BackgroundThe use of open-ended questions supplementing static questionnaires with closed questions may facilitate the recognition of symptoms and toxicities. The open-ended 'Write In three Symptoms/Problems (WISP)' instrument permits patients to report additional symptoms/problems not covered by selected EORTC questionnaires. We evaluated the acceptability and usefulness of WISP with cancer patients receiving active and palliative care/treatment in Austria, Chile, France, Jordan, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom.MethodsWe conducted a literature search on validated instrum

Comparing the effects of emotional disclosure and peer helping writing on psychological distress among Chinese international students: The moderating role of rumination.

OBJECTIVES: This study tested the effects of emotional disclosure writing and peer helping writing in reducing psychological distress among Chinese international students. This study also examined whether rumination and ambivalence over emotion expression moderated the effects of emotional disclosure and peer helping writing. METHOD: One hundred forty-four Chinese international students were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: emotional disclosure, peer helping, or neutral control writing. Participants completed two 20-min writing sessions and questionnaires at baseline, 2-month fol

Will my patients get their residence permit? A critical analysis of the ethical dilemmas involved in writing medical certificates for residence permits in France.

BACKGROUND: France has long been a country of immigration and in some respects may be seen to have a generous policy with respect to asylum seekers and access to health care for migrants. The French state notably provides healthcare access for undocumented migrants, through state medical aid and since 1998 has had a humanitarian policy for granting temporary residence permits for medical reason (TRPMR) to migrants. Within a context of political debate, reform and tightening immigration control we will examine this latter policy focusing especially on the dilemmas that arise for physicians of m

A tale of four countries: How Bowlby used his trip through Europe to write the WHO report and spread his ideas.

Attachment theory, developed by child psychiatrist John Bowlby, is considered a major theory in developmental psychology. Attachment theory can be seen as resulting from Bowlby's personal experiences, his psychoanalytic education, his subsequent study of ethology, and societal developments during the 1930s and 1940s. One of those developments was the outbreak of World War II and its effects on children's psychological wellbeing. In 1950, Bowlby was appointed WHO consultant to study the needs of children who were orphaned or separated from their families for other reasons and needed care in fos

A rapid diagnostic test for human Visceral Leishmaniasis using novel Leishmania antigens in a Laser Direct-Write Lateral Flow Device.

ABSTRACT Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) causes high morbidity and mortality in low-to-middle-income countries worldwide. In this study, we used Laser Direct-Write (LDW) technology to develop a new Lateral Flow Device (LFD) with double-channel geometry on a low-cost paper platform as a rapid and accurate serodiagnostic assay for human VL. This Duplex VL-LFD was based on a laser-patterned microfluidic device using two recombinant Leishmania proteins, β-tubulin and LiHyp1, as novel diagnostic antigens. The VL-LFD assay was tested with blood/serum samples from patients diagnosed with VL, Tegumentary

Understanding Interest and Self-Efficacy in the Reading and Writing of Students with Persisting Specific Learning Disabilities during Middle Childhood and Early Adolescence.

Three methodological approaches were applied to understand the role of interest and self-efficacy in reading and/or writing in students without and with persisting specific learning disabilities (SLDs] in literacy. For each approach students in grades 4 to 9 completed a survey in which they rated 10 reading items and 10 writing items on a Scale 1 to 5; all items were the same but domain varied. The first approach applied Principal Component Analysis with Varimax Rotation to a sample that varied in specific kinds of literacy achievement. The second approach applied bidirectional multiple regres

"Son of the Soil … Daughters of the Land": poetry writing as a strategy of citizen-making for lesbian, gay, and bisexual migrants and asylum seekers in Johannesburg.

South Africa's Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Freedom Charter are globally ground-breaking for providing provisions of non-discrimination, and, of particular note, on the basis of sexual orientation. Since the introduction of these protective frameworks, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) communities, allies, and advocates in the country have won major legal battles on these issues; however, in spite of these successes, LGBTIQ communities continue to face hostility and violence. As a result, South African LGBTIQ individuals often travel to urban centres, such

Association of dorsal inferior frontooccipital fasciculus fibers in the deep parietal lobe with both reading and writing processes: a brain mapping study.

Alexia and agraphia are disorders common to the left inferior parietal lobule, including the angular and supramarginal gyri. However, it is still unclear how these cortical regions interact with other cortical sites and what the most important white matter tracts are in relation to reading and writing processes. Here, the authors present the case of a patient who underwent an awake craniotomy for a left inferior parietal lobule glioma using direct cortical and subcortical electrostimulation. The use of subcortical stimulation allowed identification of the specific white matter tracts associate

Writing self-efficacy, achievement emotions, and engagement among Chinese EFL learners: a variable- and person-centered investigation based on control-value theory.

Drawing on the Control-Value Theory (CVT), this study adopts a dual-analytical approach to investigate the interplay of writing self-efficacy, emotions (enjoyment, anxiety, boredom), and engagement among 1,879 Chinese EFL learners. The variable-centered analysis identified writing self-efficacy as a key correlate of both behavioral and cognitive engagement, showing significant direct associations with engagement as well as indirect associations through the differentiated mediating roles of the three emotions. Notably, boredom emerged as the emotional correlate of behavioral engagement, whereas

A Comparative Study of Artificial Intelligence and Faculty Rubric-Based Grading of Pharmacy Student Writing Assignments in an Evidence-Based Medicine Course.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in health professional education, including for automated writing evaluation (AWE). While AI-based grading may reduce faculty workload and variability, its alignment with human grading remains unclear. This study compared rubric-based grading of pharmacy student drug information papers by faculty and ChatGPT (Open AI, San Francisco, CA). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative analysis of 159 de-identified assignments from a required evidence-based medicine course. Faculty-assigned grades were paired wit

Positive Psychological Changes by Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management with Writing and Sharing Experiences in Individuals with Chronic Mental Illness: A Qualitative Study.

Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of benefit finding, cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM), and expressive writing, this study qualitatively explored positive psychological changes in a group psychotherapeutic program for individuals with chronic mental illness. Participants attended weekly 90-minute small-group sessions. Positive psychological changes through participation were elicited through semi-structured interviews and an open-ended questionnaire item, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. Of the 14 valid participants, 10 were men, and the average age was 42.6 years. I

Exploring feature variability in digitally captured signatures-Part I: Variability in genuine signatures and the effects of collection sessions and writing position.

Digitally captured signatures (DCSs) pose new challenges for forensic handwriting examination compared with paper-based signatures. While DCSs provide spatial coordinates, time and force values for forensic examination, the variability of the features derived from these data remains insufficiently understood. This study therefore examined the within- and between-writer variability in 1560 genuine DCSs collected from 65 participants across eight sessions and three writing positions. These signatures were treated as questioned specimens and compared with 1820 reference DCSs collected later in on

From Solitude to AI Companionship-Three Phases of a Writing Life and What They Reveal About Rethinking Scholarly Support in Academic Medicine.

I describe three phases of a physician-scientist's writing career: solitary writing, human collaboration, and engagement with generative artificial intelligence (AI) based on large language models. I use these phases to argue that academic medicine should rethink how it supports scholarly work. The central claim, offered from a single case as hypothesis rather than proof, is that a significant obstacle to scholarly productivity can be structural rather than cognitive: the unavailability of appropriate intellectual companionship at the moment of need. In the first phase, characterized by produc

"Even when you write with a pencil there is an eraser to clean it": Examining men's conceptualisations of and involvement in emergency contraceptive use in Accra, Ghana.

Emergency contraceptive pills are an essential and unique post-coital method to avoid a pregnancy, with evidence showing the significant role men can have in procurement and decisions to use. Global Health recommendations specify that emergency contraceptive pills be used sparingly and under specific conditions. This increasingly misaligns with the myriad conceptualisations and rationales among the public for why they choose to use emergency contraceptive pills. There has been a paucity of research aiming to understanding men's involvement and how they shape women's access, choice, and autonom
