Glymphatic system impairment in multiple sclerosis: relation with brain damage and disability.

Recent evidence has shown the existence of a CNS 'waste clearance' system, defined as the glymphatic system. Glymphatic abnormalities have been described in several neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Glymphatic function has not been thoroughly explored in multiple sclerosis, where neurodegenerative processes are intermingled with inflammatory processes. We aimed to investigate glymphatic system function in multiple sclerosis and to evaluate its association with clinical disability, disease course, demyelination and neurodegeneration, quantified using d

Diffusion Tensor and Kurtosis Imaging Findings the First Year following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Despite enormous research interest in diffusion tensor imaging and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DTI; DKI) following mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), it remains unknown how diffusion in white matter evolves post-injury and relates to acute MTBI characteristics. This prospective cohort study aimed to characterize diffusion changes in white matter the first year after MTBI. Patients with MTBI (n = 193) and matched controls (n = 83) underwent 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within 72 h and 3- and 12-months post-injury. Diffusion data were analyzed in three steps: 1) voxel-wise comparisons be

Neural correlates in the development of and recovery from dysphagia after supratentorial stroke: A prospective tractography study.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing impairment after stroke may be related to the state of the corticobulbar tract (CBT), which is the motor projection fiber responsible for deglutition, but evidence is still lacking regarding which parameter could relate to poststroke swallowing recovery as measured by videofluroscope findings. This prospective study evaluated diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters among dysphagic stroke patients compared with those of nondysphagia stroke patients and age-matched healthy subjects and followed swallowing recovery in dysphagic patients as assessed with the Modified Bariu

Nanofibrous nerve guidance conduits decorated with decellularized matrix hydrogel facilitate peripheral nerve injury repair.

Rationale: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a great challenge for regenerative medicine. Nerve autograft is the gold standard for clinical PNI repair. Due to its significant drawbacks, artificial nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) have drawn much attention as replacement therapies. We developed a combinatorial NGC consisting of longitudinally aligned electrospun nanofibers and porcine decellularized nerve matrix hydrogel (pDNM gel). The in vivo capacity for facilitating nerve tissue regeneration and functional recovery was evaluated in a rat sciatic nerve defect model. Methods: Poly (L-lactic acid

Structure-Modulated Circular Dichroism in Chiral Plasmonic Nanoparticles.

Plasmonic nanoparticles with an intrinsic chiral structure have emerged as pivotal platforms for exploring advanced chiroptical phenomena, with promising applications in asymmetric catalysis, chirality sensing, biomedicine, and spin optoelectronics. Distinct from organic chiral molecules, chiral plasmonic nanoparticles exhibit strong and tunable circular dichroism responses originating from structure-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance. Therefore, the structure of chiral plasmonic nanoparticles, including size, geometry, anisotropy, and twinned structure, serves as the core determina

Longitudinal MAP-MRI-based Assessment of Tissue Microstructural Alterations in Acute mTBI.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a signature injury in civilian and military populations that remains invisible to detection by conventional radiological methods. Diffusion MRI has been identified as a potential clinical tool for revealing subtle microstructural alterations associated with mTBI. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates whether a comprehensive and powerful diffusion MRI (dMRI) technique called mean apparent propagator (MAP) MRI can detect sequelae of mTBI. METHODS: We analyzed data from 417 participants of the GE/NFL prospective mTBI study which included 143 matched c

Inflammation, Limbic White Matter Microstructure, and Clinical Symptoms in Retired American Football Players With Repetitive Head Impacts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The link between repetitive head impact (RHI) exposure, later-life cognitive decline, and neurobehavioral dysregulation (NBD) is not well understood. Recent work has implicated inflammation and limbic dysfunction as relevant RHI correlates. Our goal was to integrate plasma and CSF inflammatory biomarkers, structural brain imaging, and clinical measures in former elite American football players to better understand reasons for RHI-related cognitive and neurobehavioral changes. METHODS: Participants were from the Diagnostics, Imaging, and Genetics Network for the Obje

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Promotes Neurological Resilience in Current Collegiate American Football Players Exposed to Repetitive Head Acceleration Events.

Repetitive head acceleration events (RHAE) are common in contact sports and associated with neuroinflammation, axonal injury, and long-term neurological impairments, including increased risk for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Current strategies for addressing RHAE focus on post-injury care rather than proactive neuroprotection, leaving athletes vulnerable to cumulative neurotrauma. Transcranial photobiomodulation (PBM) has shown promise in reducing neuroinflammation and promoting neuroprotection in traumatic brain injury; however, its potential to mitigate the structural brain changes assoc

A multimodal model for clinically defined MCI integrating plasma biomarkers and brain microstructural features: a dual-cohort external validation study.

OBJECTIVE: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is clinically and etiologically heterogeneous. We aimed to develop and externally validate a multimodal model for distinguishing clinically defined MCI from normal cognition using plasma biomarkers and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-derived white-matter features. METHODS: We analyzed 310 participants from a local discovery cohort (n = 153; 80 MCI and 73 cognitively normal [NC]) and an independent Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative phase 4 (ADNI4) validation cohort (n = 157; 68 MCI and 89 NC). EEG-fMRI neurofeedback versus motor imagery after stroke, a randomized controlled trial.

Neurofeedback (NF), an advanced technique enabling self-regulation of brain activity, was used to enhance upper limb motor recovery in chronic stroke survivors. A comparison was conducted between the efficacy of NF versus motor imagery (MI) training without feedback. We hypothesized that employing a bimodal EEG-fMRI based NF training approach would ensure precise targeting, and incorporating progressive multi-target feedback would provide a more effective mean to enhance plasticity. Thirty stroke survivors, exhibiting partial upper-limb motor impairment with a Fugl-Meyer Assessment Upper Extre

Electrically and mechanically tunable Rashba splitting in SbSeI Janus layer: a density functional theory study.

Two-dimensional materials with Rashba-like spin splitting near the Fermi level hold significant potential for next-generation spintronic devices. Using density functional theory based calculations, we demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling along with broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry induces strong Rashba splitting in the lowest conduction states of SbSeI Janus layer. This allows the possibility of spin control via an external electric field. The Rashba spin split bands are isotropic around the Γ point due to the presence of three-fold rotational [Formula: see text] symmetry. The values of Ras

Cervical spinal cord MRI in ALS individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Disease tracking and prognostication of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can be quite challenging in people living with ALS, due to the complexity of central nervous system disease biology. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to summarize cervical spinal cord quantitative MRI (qMRI) biomarker changes in individuals with ALS. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched up to August 2023. The terms used were "ALS", "cervical spinal cord", "MRI"," diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)", " fractional anisotropy (FA)", " mean diffusivity (

Prenatal Adversity and Neonatal Brain Connectivity Relate to Emerging Executive Function at Age 2 Years.

OBJECTIVE: Early life adversity alters the structure and function of higher-order brain networks that subserve executive function (EF). The extent that prenatal exposure to adversity and neonatal white matter (WM) microstructure and resting-state functional connectivity (rs-fc) underlie problems in emerging EF remains unclear. METHOD: This prospective study includes 164 infants (45% female, 85% term-born) who were recruited prenatally and underwent neonatal diffusion and rs-fc magnetic resonance imaging scans. Social disadvantage and maternal psychosocial stress were assessed in the prenatal

Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances predicts multimodal brain structural and functional outcomes in children aged 5 years: a birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants associated with adverse health outcomes in humans. Although they are associated with autism spectrum disorder and behavioural outcomes, whether PFAS affect brain development is unclear. We aimed to characterise the relationship between maternal PFAS and brain structure and function in typically developing children. METHODS: This study was set within the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study, a prospective observational study that enrolled mothers from three clinics in Turku, Finland, during th

Nerve matters: Longitudinal microstructural change in the trigeminal nerve is associated with durable pain relief after surgery for trigeminal neuralgia.

BackgroundMany patients with medically-refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN) fail to achieve lasting pain relief following surgery targeting the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve five; CNV). While some studies using MRI diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) suggest that preoperative CNV microstructure may predict surgical response, the findings remain inconsistent. Furthermore, the relationship between post-surgical CNV microstructural changes and long-term pain relief is not well understood. Using a novel CNV-nerve specific DTI protocol, the present study aimed to determine whether: (1) preoperative CN

Vestibular agnosia in traumatic brain injury and its link to imbalance.

Vestibular dysfunction, causing dizziness and imbalance, is a common yet poorly understood feature in patients with TBI. Damage to the inner ear, nerve, brainstem, cerebellum and cerebral hemispheres may all affect vestibular functioning, hence, a multi-level assessment-from reflex to perception-is required. In a previous report, postural instability was the commonest neurological feature in ambulating acute patients with TBI. During ward assessment, we also frequently observe a loss of vertigo sensation in patients with acute TBI, common inner ear conditions and a related vigorous vestibular-

Combined structural and diffusion tensor imaging detection of ischemic injury in moyamoya disease: relation to disease advancement and cerebral hypoperfusion.

OBJECTIVE: The microstructural integrity of gray and white matter is decreased in adult moyamoya disease, suggesting covert ischemic injury as a mechanism of cognitive dysfunction. Establishing a microstructural brain imaging marker is critical for monitoring cognitive outcomes following surgical interventions. The authors of the present study determined the pathophysiological basis of altered microstructural brain injury in relation to advanced arterial occlusion, cerebral hypoperfusion, and cognitive function. METHODS: The authors examined 58 patients without apparent brain lesions and 30 h

Advanced MRI analysis to detect white matter brain injury in growth restricted newborn lambs.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a serious pregnancy complication associated with increased risk of adverse neurodevelopment and neuromorbidity. Current imaging techniques, including conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are not sensitive enough to detect subtle structural abnormalities in the FGR brain. We examined whether advanced MRI analysis techniques have the capacity to detect brain injury (particularly white matter injury) caused by chronic hypoxia-induced fetal growth restriction in newborn preterm lambs. METHODS: Surgery was undertaken in twin bearing pregnant
