Axonal damage in the optic radiation assessed by white matter tract integrity metrics is associated with retinal thinning in multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: White matter damage in the visual pathway is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) and is associated with retinal thinning, although the underlying mechanism of association remains unclear. The goal of this work was to evaluate the presence and extent of white matter tract integrity (WMTI) alterations in the optic radiation (OR) in people with MS and to investigate the association between WMTI metrics and retinal thinning in the eyes of MS patients without a history of optic neuritis (ON) as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). We hypothesized that WMTI metrics would refle

Longitudinal white matter change in frontotemporal dementia subtypes and sporadic late onset Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Degradation of white matter microstructure has been demonstrated in frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). In preparation for clinical trials, ongoing studies are investigating the utility of longitudinal brain imaging for quantification of disease progression. To date only one study has examined sample size calculations based on longitudinal changes in white matter integrity in FTLD. OBJECTIVE: To quantify longitudinal changes in white matter microstructural integrity in the three canonical subtypes of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and AD using dif

Preclinical chorioamnionitis dysregulates CXCL1/CXCR2 signaling throughout the placental-fetal-brain axis.

In the United States, perinatal brain injury (PBI) is a major cause of infant mortality and childhood disability. For a large proportion of infants with PBI, central nervous system (CNS) injury begins in utero with inflammation (chorioamnionitis/CHORIO) and/or hypoxia-ischemia. While studies show CHORIO contributes to preterm CNS injury and is also a common independent risk factor for brain injury in term infants, the molecular mechanisms mediating inflammation in the placental-fetal-brain axis that result in PBI remain a gap in knowledge. The chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1), and its

Altered states of consciousness in epilepsy: a DTI study of the brain.

BACKGROUND: A disturbance in the level of consciousness is a classical clinical sign of several seizure types. Recent studies have shown that altered states of consciousness in seizures are associated with structural and functional changes of several brain regions. Prominent among these are the thalamus, the brain stem and the default mode network, which is part of the consciousness system. Our study used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to evaluate these brain regions in patients with three different types of epilepsies that are associated with altered consciousness: complex partial seizures (C

Quantifying mechanical and morphological properties of plantar foot soft tissues: a systematic review of techniques, methods and their clinimetric properties.

BACKGROUND: Plantar foot soft tissues play a crucial role in absorbing and distributing mechanical stresses during weight-bearing activities. Accurate quantification of their mechanical and morphological properties is essential for understanding load distribution, tissue integrity, and managing conditions like diabetic foot disease. However, the best technique to investigate these properties remains unknown. This systematic review evaluates the clinimetric attributes (i.e. reliability, validity, and repeatability) of existing techniques to identify those most suitable for research and clinical

Electroacupuncture at Dazhui (GV14) and Mingmen (GV4) acupoints promoting nerve repair in rat model of spinal cord injury: a study based on diffusion tensor imaging.

BACKGROUND: The rupture and demyelination of nerve fibers after spinal cord injury (SCI) are primary contributors to neurological dysfunction. The axon attraction signal pathway mediated by netrin-1 is crucial for promoting the effective regeneration and repair of nerve axons. Previous studies have proved that electroacupuncture (EA) can improve nerve function and promote nerve repair and regeneration in rats with SCI, yet its underlying mechanism remains to be elucidated. This study aims to evaluate the effects of EA on neural repair and to investigate its regulatory role in the axon guidance

Atlas-based assessment of hypomyelination: Quantitative MRI in Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease.

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) is a rare childhood hypomyelinating leukodystrophy. Quantification of the pronounced myelin deficit and delineation of subtle myelination processes are of high clinical interest. Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) techniques can provide in vivo insights into myelination status, its spatial distribution, and dynamics during brain maturation. They may serve as potential biomarkers to assess the efficacy of myelin-modulating therapies. However, registration techniques for image quantification and statistical comparison of affected pediatric brains, e

Characterisation of brain volume and microstructure at term-equivalent age in infants born across the gestational age spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Risk of morbidity differs between very preterm (VP; <32 weeks' gestational age (GA)), moderate preterm (MP; 32-33 weeks' GA), late preterm (LP; 34-36 weeks' GA), and full-term (FT; ≥37 weeks' GA) infants. However, brain structure at term-equivalent age (TEA; 38-44 weeks) remains to be characterised in all clinically important GA groups. We aimed to compare global and regional brain volumes, and regional white matter microstructure, between VP, MP, LP and FT groups at TEA, in order to establish the magnitude and anatomical locations of between-group differences. METHODS: Structural

Structural and spectroscopic studies on mercury(II) tribenzylphosphine complexes.

The tribenzylphosphine (PBz3) complexes of mercury(II), [Hg(PBz3)2](BF4)2, [Hg(PBz3)2(NO3)2] and [HgX(NO3)(PBz3)](X = Cl, Br, I and SCN), have been synthesised and their structures determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. [Hg(PBz3)2](BF4)2 contains [Hg(PBz3)2]2+ cations with linear P-Hg-P coordination, the first example of a truly two-coordinate [Hg(PR3)2]2+ complex. The mercury coordination in [Hg(PBz3)2(NO3)2] can be described as distorted tetrahedral, with a significant deviation of the P-Hg-P angle from linearity as a result of coordination of the nitrate groups. Nitrate coordin

Normative Gray Matter Stiffness Gradients in the Human Brain Predict Patterns of Cortical Injury after Concussion.

Finite-element modeling and in vivo MR strain mapping show that mechanical strain concentrates in the cortex, and late-life neurodegenerative sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) are predominantly gray matter disorders. Nonetheless, in vivo evidence of acute gray matter damage after mild TBI (mTBI) has remained elusive. The empirical gap derives from a limitation of conventional diffusion tensor metrics, which are blind to the cortex's isotropic yet mechanically relevant solid-phase matrix of soma (glial and neural), dendrites, and extracellular scaffold. Here, we leveraged constrained sph

Exploring the association and mediation between educational attainment and intracerebral hemorrhage: an integrated Mendelian randomization and global burden of disease analysis.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) significantly threatens human health, and educational attainment (EA) may influence the burden of ICH. We aim to explore the relationship between EA levels and ICH by Mendelian randomization (MR) and Global Burden of Disease (GBD). We conducted bidirectional univariate MR (UVMR) analyses to evaluate the causal relationship between EA levels and ICH, and multivariate MR (MVMR) analyses to control for confounders. A two-step MR analyses were employed to assess the mediating effects of brain image-derived phenotypes (IDPs) and gut microbiota. Subsequently, MVMR and

Association Between Acute Plasma Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein Levels and White Matter Integrity in Recent Trauma Survivors.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) account for over 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits each year in the United States. The bulk of TBI research in acute care settings has focused exclusively on individuals who receive computed tomography (CT) scanning. Recently, more sensitive TBI assessment tools have been identified, including blood biomarkers such as glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of white matter microstructural integrity. These methods can evaluate for evidence of TBI in CT-negative patients. However, limited prior work has investigated t

Precision Imaging in Neurodegeneration: The Superiority of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Over Conventional MRI in Differentiating Parkinson's Disease From Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes.

Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, leading to motor and non-motor symptoms. Atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS), including progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and essential tremor (ET), present with overlapping clinical features, making differential diagnosis challenging. Conventional MRI has limitations in distinguishing PD from APS, necessitating advanced imaging techniques like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for more accurate diagnosis. Objectives This retrospec
