The main issue in the management of glottic squamous cell carcinoma, as for all cancers, is adequate disease control while optimizing functional outcomes and minimizing morbidity. This is true for early-stage disease as for advanced tumors. This article evaluates the current evidence for the diagnostic and pretherapeutic workup for glottic squamous cell carcinoma and the evidence concerning different treatment options for glottic carcinoma, from early-stage to advanced-stage disease.

Imaging with CT, MRI, or fluorodeoxyglucose F 18-positron emission tomography is often an important complement to laryngoscopy for diagnosis and management of laryngeal pathology. At most centers, CT is the most popular modality for general laryngeal imaging given its widespread availability, ease of acquisition, and familiarity to clinicians, whereas MRI and positron emission tomography are used as problem-solving tools. Frequent indications for laryngeal imaging include cancer staging, suspected submucosal abnormalities, vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal trauma, and laryngotracheal stenosis. T

OBJECTIVE: To investigate post-operative symptom improvement in patients with severe laryngomalacia.
STUDY DESIGN: Severe laryngomalacia was diagnosed in 138 patients (average age of 6.97 months) by bronchoscopy. Laryngomalacia was defined by the direction of supraglottic collapse: type A (posterolateral), type B (complete), and type C (anterior). As multiple laryngomalacia types within an individual were common, patients were further categorized into group I (type A only), group II (type B or B+A), and group III (type C, C+A, or C+B+A). CO(2) laser supraglottoplasty was performed. Improvemen

To demonstrate structural changes in the cricoarytenoid joint after recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, we performed a laboratory investigation of fixed arytenoid cartilages from adult humans obtained during laser surgical arytenoidectomy in cases of bilateral vocal fold paralysis, analyzing the articular cartilage, the joint capsule, and the attached laryngeal musculature. Ten arytenoid cartilages from adult humans were studied by means of histology, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy. After long-standing denervation (>6 months), all arytenoid cartilages showed degenera

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the rehabilitation outcomes of long-term survivors following treatment for head and neck cancer. There are, for example, no studies on physical and psychosocial rehabilitation outcomes of T1 glottic larynx carcinoma, despite the fact that these form the majority of head and neck cancer sites. Thus, this investigation afforded a unique opportunity for examining similarities and differences among T1 glottic larynx patients, laryngectomy patients, and those who had surgery for cancer of the oral cavity and/or oropharynx along a variety of physical and psychosocia

From 1976 to 1986, 106 patients with early glottic carcinoma were managed endoscopically at our institution. Twenty-four (23%) patients required retreatment of the larynx for local recurrences or new primary lesions after initial endoscopic management. The probability of remaining free of local recurrence 3 years after primary surgery was estimated to be 0.87 and, after 5 years, it was 0.81. Of the 24 patients who required re-treatment of their larynx, 10 did so beyond 3 years, indicating a new second primary. In 1 patient who required retreatment within 3 years, a new primary developed on the

BACKGROUND: Vertical partial laryngectomy (VPL) and radiation therapy (RT) are the recommended conventional conservative options for glottic carcinoma classified as T2. In series presenting more than 100 patients with a minimum 3-year follow-up, however, local recurrence rates were reported as 22-43.5%. The authors' experience with a new strategy based on continuous cisplatin-fluorouracil induction chemotherapy (IC) and supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoepiglottopexy (CHEP) is presented.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 67 patients who presented with untreated moderately to w

CASE DESCRIPTION: A patient aged 31 was admitted to the Ward because of hoarseness and difficulties in breathing. Family case history was negative. Personal case history shows pneumonia and jaundice. Hoarseness occurred suddenly, four months earlier, and did not change until hospitalization. The patient occasionally woke up for air loss. He first came for otolaryngological examination on November 23, 1995, and was admitted for examination and treatment. By frontal rhinoscopy, oropharingoscopic and otoscopic findings are regular. Indirect laryngoscopy shows regular findings in the hypopharynx.

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (Morquio-Brailsford syndrome) results from an inborn deficiency of n-acetyl-galactosamine-6-sulphate sulphatase. Clinical features include skeletal deformities with hypoplasia or absence of the odontoid process of the axis. The resulting atlanto-axial subluxation compresses the spinal cord, resulting in cervical myelopathy. Without treatment, quadriplegia ensues sooner or later; consequently, surgical decompression and dorsal fusion of the cervical vertebrae is recommended, either prophylactically or therapeutically. Anaesthesiological management must focus on protect

PURPOSE: NFE2L2/KEAP1/CUL3 mutations have been validated for radioresistance in cell-based assays and animal models. However, clinical validation of these biomarkers has been challenging because of multimodality treatment regimens. This study aims to investigate the association between NFE2L2/KEAP1/CUL3 mutations and patient outcomes, including local failure, locoregional failure, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival, using samples from a phase III trial in which patients were treated with radiation monotherapy at two controlled doses.

BACKGROUND: Worsening voice and speech quality was frequently reported in head-and-neck patients after radiotherapy to the neck; omitting the lower neck and sparing the glottic larynx in node-negative nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients might be safe and feasible, and improve voice and speech outcomes.
METHODS: From January 2009 to January 2013, 71 patients were analyzed. All patients received bilateral neck irradiation. Upper group (UG) patients spared the glottic larynx while lower group (LG) patients did not. Voice and speech quality were evaluated at two time-points (T1 and T2) using
