Type-D personality and body image in men: the role of exercise status.

The 'Distressed' or Type-D personality is described by the interaction between high levels of negative affectivity and social inhibition. This study investigated the prevalence of Type-D personality in men of different exercise status, the association between Type-D and body image perceptions, and the moderating effect of exercise status. Participants were 564 British males aged between 18 and 55 years. Of these 200 were classified as sedentary, 148 as active and 216 as weight trainers. Participants completed the DS14 and Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire. Results showed that

Videotaped experiments to drop safety behaviors and self-focused attention for patients with social anxiety disorder: do they change subjective and objective evaluations of anxiety and performance?

Safety behavior (SB) and self-focused attention (SFA) have been posited as important maintenance factors in the cognitive model of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The present study reports the results of experiments to drop SB and SFA among clinically diagnosed patients with SAD employing their own idiosyncratic anxiety-provoking situations. The ratings for observable anxiety, belief in feared outcome and overall performance were better for role plays without SB and SFA than for role plays with them. The degree of drop in SFA predicted drop in observable anxiety and belief in feared outcome. Dr

Greater expectations: using hierarchical linear modeling to examine expectancy for treatment outcome as a predictor of treatment response.

A client's expectation that therapy will be beneficial has long been considered an important factor contributing to therapeutic outcomes, but recent empirical work examining this hypothesis has primarily yielded null findings. The present study examined the contribution of expectancies for treatment outcome to actual treatment outcome from the start of therapy through 12-month follow-up in a clinical sample of individuals (n=72) treated for fear of flying with either in vivo exposure or virtual reality exposure therapy. Using a piecewise hierarchical linear model, outcome expectancy predicted

The Cardiff dental study: a 20-year critical evaluation of the psychological health gain from orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the widespread belief that orthodontics improves psychological well-being and self-esteem, there is little objective evidence to support this (Kenealy et al., 1989a; Shaw, O'Brien, Richmond, & Brook, 1991). A 20 year follow-up study compared the dental and psychosocial status of individuals who received, or did not receive, orthodontics as teenagers. DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal cohort design with four studies of the effect of orthodontic treatment. Secondary analysis of outcome data incorporated orthodontic need at baseline and treatment received in a 2 x 2 factoria

A 24-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of escitalopram for the prevention of generalized social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Escitalopram has proven efficacy in the short-term treatment of generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD). The present relapse prevention study investigated relapse rates during a 24-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled period in patients with generalized SAD who had responded to 12-week open-label treatment with escitalopram. METHOD: A total of 517 patients with a primary diagnosis of generalized SAD (per DSM-IV criteria) and a Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) total score of > or = 70 received 12 weeks of open-label treatment with flexible doses (10-20 mg/day) o

Homophobia: a challenge for psychosocial nursing.

1. In 1975, the American Psychological Association stated that homosexuality was not a disorder and that homophobia was a form of prejudice based on stereotypes. 2. Because homophobia, like racism or sexism, is learned, it can be unlearned. 3. People who feel homosexuality is a choice hold more negative attitudes toward individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. 4. Homophobia not only damages individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered, but also limits heterosexuals by locking them into rigid gender-based roles.

Behavioral avoidance dynamics in the presence of a virtual spider.

Tracking behavior with a virtual spider and a neutral target is compared in fearful and nonfearful subjects. Head-tracking in virtual environments appears to be a scale-free behavior with long-range fractal-like patterns. Moreover, these fractal patterns change according to what the target affords the tracker and the level of behavioral avoidance manifested by the subjects. Results are interpreted in terms of ecological psychology and nonlinear dynamics, and implications for virtual reality (VR) psychology are outlined.

Specific phobia 10-16 years after treatment.

Twenty eight participants, initially treated for specific phobia as part of a comparative treatment study, were evaluated 10 to 16 years (X = 12 years) later. A comprehensive, in-person, semi-structured diagnostic interview was utilized, which also assessed comorbid disorders. Of 21 patients who had been rated as responders (much improved or very much improved) at treatment termination, 13 (62%) had clinically significant avoidance or endurance with dread subsequent to treatment. Among a subgroup of these responders who had been considered completely recovered (n = 11), 5 (45%) had clinically

Video Teaching Leads to Improved Attitudes Towards Obesity-a Randomized Study with 949 Participants.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a rising social and economic burden. Patients with obesity often suffer from stigmatization and discrimination. Underrecognition of obesity as a disease could be a contributing factor. The present study aimed to compare attitudes towards obesity with other chronic diseases and to evaluate the recognition of need of professional treatment. METHODS: Nine hundred and forty-nine participants (subgroups: general population, patients with obesity, nurses in training, nurses, medical students, physicians) were randomized to video teaching on obesity and control. Internet-based interpretation bias modification for social anxiety: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The biased interpretation of ambiguous social situations is considered a maintaining factor of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Studies on the modification of interpretation bias have shown promising results in laboratory settings. The present study aims at pilot-testing an Internet-based training that targets interpretation and judgmental bias. METHOD: Thirty-nine individuals meeting diagnostic criteria for SAD participated in an 8-week, unguided program. Participants were presented with ambiguous social situations, were asked to choose between neutral, positive, and

The relations among measurements of informant discrepancies within a multisite trial of treatments for childhood social phobia.

Discrepancies between informants' reports of children's behavior are robustly observed in clinical child research and have important implications for interpreting the outcomes of controlled treatment trials. However, little is known about the basic psychometric properties of these discrepancies. This study examined the relation between parent-child reporting discrepancies on measures of child social phobia symptoms, administered before and after treatment for social phobia. Participants included a clinic sample of 81 children (7-16 years old [M = 11.75, SD = 2.57]; 39 girls, 42 boys) and their

The functional neuroanatomy of blood-injection-injury phobia: a comparison with spider phobics and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Most neuroimaging studies of specific phobia have investigated the animal subtype. The blood-injection-injury (BII) subtype is characterized by a unique biphasic psychophysiological response, which could suggest a distinct neural substrate, but direct comparisons between phobia types are lacking. METHOD: This study compared the neural responses during the presentation of phobia-specific stimuli in 12 BII phobics, 14 spider (SP) phobics and 14 healthy controls using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). RESULTS: Subjective ratings showed that the experimental paradigm prod

The Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ)-further validation including a confirmatory factor analysis and a comparison with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia.

Acceptance of pain and distress has lately appeared as an important factor in determining peoples' ability to restore functioning in the presence of chronic pain. Although treatments based on cognitive behaviour therapy are beginning to incorporate acceptance strategies, there is still a lack of reliable and valid instruments to assess relevant processes in such interventions. The Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ) was originally constructed as part of the development of an acceptance oriented treatment approach for pain patients. A revised 20-item version of the instrument with two

Burning mouth syndrome: a retrospective study of 140 cases in a sample of Catalan population.

The results of analyzing etiologic and clinical factors, and their connection with the burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in a sample of Catalan (Barcelona, Spain) population are presented in this work. The purpose of this study is to establish connections between BMS and the following variables: age, sex, overt depression, masked depression, cancerophobia, dry mouth, foreign body sensation in the mouth, and burning. 140 clinical cases of patients diagnosed with the disease and 140 cases of control patients are studied here. The data were statistically analyzed to study connections as well as the di

The effect of anxiety induction on the regional uptake of 99mTc-exametazime in simple phobia as shown by single photon emission tomography (SPET).

Ten patients suffering from DSM-III-R simple phobia were studied under two conditions: (a) while listening to a 4 min relaxation tape, and (b) while listening to a 4 min audio tape describing exposure to the phobic stimulus. During each condition, subjects were injected with 99mTc-Exametazime, a marker of regional cerebral blood flow. Subjective and psychophysiological measures indicated a marked effect of the anxiety induction procedure. Ratio analysis of the SPET data revealed reductions in tracer uptake largely confined to posterior cerebral regions bilaterally. Analysis of brain regions of

Respiratory and hemodynamic contributions to emotion-related pre-syncopal vasovagal symptoms.

Vasovagal reactions are conventionally understood as resulting from systemic changes in cardiovascular activity; however, there exists a complementary perspective focused on specific changes in cerebral vasoconstriction associated with hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia. The present study investigated the role of cardiovascular and respiratory activity in self-reported pre-syncopal vasovagal reactions to a surgery video in a sample of 49 healthy women. Participants who indicated more previous real-life episodes of dizziness reported experiencing significantly more symptoms in the laboratory c

Speeches, strangers, and alcohol use: the role of context in social stress response dampening.

According to the Stress Response Dampening model, problem drinking develops after learning that alcohol limits the stress response in anxiety-provoking situations. However, laboratory-based studies testing alcohol's effects on social anxiety have yielded mixed results. The current study was the first to examine stress response dampening across two contexts: a performance-based (a speech) and an interaction-based (a conversation) social situation. Undergraduates (N = 62; M(age) = 22.85; 31% women; 81% Caucasian) were randomly assigned to consume an alcoholic (target BAC = .08%; n = 22), placebo

Contrast-enhanced breast MR imaging of claustrophobic or oversized patients using an open low-field magnet.

PURPOSE: A number of women who should undergo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the breast cannot use this diagnostic tool due to claustrophobia or excessive body size for the restricted confines of standard closed MR systems. Our aim was to evaluate the performance of open low-field magnet breast MR imaging in such patients using a high-relaxivity contrast agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 397 consecutive patients undergoing breast MR imaging, 379 (95.5%) were studied at 1.5 T. Due to claustrophobia (n=15) or large body size (n=3), 18 patients (4.5%) were studied on a 0.2-T open magnet using
