In students with physical disabilities, the more energy and time required and invested into finding a good posture, the longer the learning process takes. For this reason, the objective of this study was to characterize the posture in the act of writing of wheelchair users in a classroom. Eight students, (three women) aged 18-40, of some of the main universities of the city of Santiago de Cali participated. An observational field study filming of approximately 10 minutes was done while they took notes in their classes. Posture of the head, trunk, and upper extremities was analyzed with respect

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2011eng
Glenohumeral arthrosis frequently results in substantial discomfort and activity limitations. Shoulder arthroplasty has been shown to provide reliable pain relief under these circumstances in older, less active populations. Younger patients, however, who desire to continue participation in high-demand activities, may not be optimal candidates for glenohumeral arthroplasty. Arthroscopic debridement has been reported to provide incomplete symptomatic relief in this cohort of patients. It is evident from cadaveric studies that the axillary nerve runs in close proximity to the inferior glenohumera

BACKGROUND: Resilience refers to the ability to adapt or recover from stress. There is increasing appreciation that it plays an important role in wholistic patient-centered care and may affect patient outcomes, including those of orthopaedic surgery. Despite being a focus of the current orthopaedic evidence, there is no strong understanding yet of whether resilience is a stable patient quality or a dynamic one that may be modified perioperatively to improve patient-reported outcome scores.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does resilience change postoperatively? (2) How do outcome measures change posto

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including the Patient-reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), are increasingly used to measure healthcare value. The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) is a metric that helps clinicians determine whether a statistically detectable improvement in a PROM after surgical care is likely to be large enough to be important to a patient or to justify an intervention that carries risk and cost. There are two major categories of MCID calculation methods, anchor-based and distribution-based. This variability, coupled wi

BACKGROUND: Elective tympanoplasty often uses supraglottic airway devices, such as the laryngeal mask airway (LMA), to ensure smooth emergence from anesthesia. However, LMA-associated postoperative sore throat (POST) remains prevalent. Lateral head rotation during surgery alters LMA intracuff pressure (CP), but the relationship between these pressure changes and POST remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations of LMA characteristics, anesthetic management, and position-induced dynamic CP variations with acute POST.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1,363 adult pa

BACKGROUND: Multiple grafts have been described for glenoid resurfacing in the setting of anterior shoulder instability with glenoid bone loss. The medial tibial plateau has been shown to have a similar radius of curvature to the glenoid and may be an appropriate anatomic match for glenoid resurfacing.
PURPOSE: To evaluate restoration of glenoid concavity and anterior glenohumeral stability among the distal tibial allograft (DTA), distal clavicle autograft (DCA), and medial tibial plateau allograft (MTPA).
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Nine sets of fresh-frozen unpaire

BACKGROUND: Distal tibial allograft (DTA) reconstruction for glenoid bone loss (GBL) has gained popularity. While recent studies have demonstrated that glenoid concavity is an important factor in native glenohumeral stability, there remains a paucity of data regarding concavity restoration during reconstructive procedures for GBL and its biomechanical effect.
PURPOSE: To compare the restoration of anterior glenohumeral stability and glenoid concavity after DTA and classic Latarjet procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Nine human cadaveric specimens (mean age, 62.2

BACKGROUND: As reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) becomes a common treatment option in the revision setting, common problems associated with Grammont's design such as scapular notching, instability, and rotator cuff weakening occur. Design changes associated with superior outcomes in primary rTSA, such as glenoid or humeral lateralization have not yet been examined in the revision settings. The purpose of this consecutive series of revision rTSA is to evaluate the clinical and radiological short-term results after aseptic and septic revision rTSA and explore potential benefits of metal

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) associated with modified L'Episcopo (isolated LD) or L'Episcopo (combined TM and LD) procedures had been confirmed to effectively overcome the expected external rotation deficit in patient with postero-superior massive cuff tear and teres minor deficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the radiological bony lesions of the lateral proximal humerus following RSA combined with tendon transfer, and to determine whether these bony lesions affect the clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder of abnormal hemoglobin synthesis that is known to cause glenohumeral avascular necrosis (AVN). Little has been published on the use of shoulder arthroplasty (SA) for the treatment of glenohumeral AVN in SCD. We report on the clinical and radiographic results and postoperative complications following SA in the patient cohort.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed identifying 17 primary SAs (9 hemiarthroplasties, 7 anatomic total SAs, and 1 reverse total SA) in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD and a minimum of 2-year

INTRODUCTION: Primary subacute pyogenic osteomyelitis, or Brodie's abscess was initially documented by Sir Benjamin Brodie in 1832. We present a case report with a 6-months follow-up period, demonstrating the successful diagnosis and surgical treatment of a focal lesion of the proximal metaphysis of the right humerus in a 21-years-old female. The pathology of hematologic osteomyelitis and its role in the development of a subacute abscess along with a review of literature and an in detail description of the pathogenesis of Brodie's abscess is discussed and submitted.

BACKGROUND: The remplissage procedure may be performed as an adjunct to Bankart repair to treat recurrent glenohumeral dislocation associated with an engaging Hill-Sachs humeral head defect. The purpose of this in vitro biomechanical study was to examine the effects of the remplissage procedure on glenohumeral joint motion and stability.
METHODS: Cadaveric shoulders (n = 8) were mounted on a biomechanical testing apparatus that applies simulated loads to the rotator cuff and the anterior, middle, and posterior heads of the deltoid muscle. Testing was performed with the shoulder intact, after

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) consistently improves pain and function; however, the biomechanical mechanisms underpinning post-operative function and joint-level adaptations remain incompletely defined. Advanced measurement tools, including motion capture, electromyography (EMG), inertial measurement units, and accelerometry, enable objective assessment of joint motion, muscle activation, and real-world arm use. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from studies using advanced biomechanical methods to evaluate post-operative kinematics, upper-limb activity, and m

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) for fracture currently shares a single Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code with RSA for arthropathy despite potential differences in patient factors, procedural demands, postoperative care and needs, and overall hospital systems' resource utilization. We hypothesize that patients indicated for RSA for fracture will have greater medical complexity, require longer operative duration, have higher complication rates, demonstrate inferior functional outcomes, and require greater health care cost expenditures compared to a cohort undergoing RSA f

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet procedure is increasingly being utilized for the treatment of glenoid bone loss and has a relatively high neurological complication rate. Understanding the position-dependent anatomy of the axillary nerve (AN) is crucial to preventing injuries.
PURPOSE: To quantify the effects of changes in the shoulder position and degree of glenoid bone loss during the Latarjet procedure on the position of the AN.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A total of 10 cadaveric shoulders were dissected, leaving the tendons of the rotator cuff and deltoid for muscle load

INTRODUCTION: Glenoid bone loss is a commonly encountered problem in complex primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty. Addressing glenoid bone loss is critical to avoid complications like early loosening, impingement, notching and instability. A large number of techniques like bone grafting using autograft or allograft, eccentric reaming, augmented base plates, patient-specific instrumentations and custom-made implants are available to tackle bone loss.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively collected the data of all patients with glenoid defects undergoing primary or revision reverse shou

PURPOSE: Infection represents probably the most challenging complication in shoulder arthroplasty and all other surgical procedures of the shoulder. A deep infection of the shoulder is often combined with a destruction of the joint and a loss of function. In many cases the arthroplasty is the last resort for these patients to obtain a satisfactory function. The objective of this study was to determine outcome data on microbiota and clinical results of a two-stage shoulder arthroplasty procedure after deep infection of the shoulder.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients with a deep shoulder infection a

BACKGROUND: Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder is a painful condition characterized by the presence of calcium deposits within the tendons of the rotator cuff (RTC). When conservative management fails, arthroscopic surgery for removal of the calcium may be considered. Surgical removal is often followed by RTC repair to address the resulting tendon defect. This study was performed to assess predictive factors for failure of conservative management and to characterize the rate of RTC repair in the setting of calcific tendinitis. We hypothesize that larger calcific lesion would have a higher lik
