This article describes a community psychiatric survey of a random sample (n = 291) of Greek Cypriot immigrants living in London. Over three quarters of the immigrants were first generation. Information from the subject and from hospital case records were used to date previous episodes of psychiatric disorder. Datable episodes had occurred in 52 subjects. There was no evidence that the risk of breakdown was increased in the immediate aftermath of immigration. For 34 subjects who experienced their first illness after migration, the mean interval was 15 years. In only 9% did breakdown occur withi

OBJECTIVE: The number of ethnic German immigrants from former East bloc countries (Aussiedler) has considerably increased during the past 20 years. However, studies on the frequency of psychiatric disorders or on psychosocial risk factors for psychiatric morbidity in this partially inhomogenous population group are remarkably rare.
METHOD: We undertook a comprehensive research of the current literature to gain the first systematic review on this issue.
RESULTS: The most frequent mental disorders among these special group of migrants were depressive disorders, adjustment disorders with brief

In most migrations some selection takes place either by the absorbing country and/or the individuals who emigrate. Israel has an open-door policy for immigrants and the recent large wave of immigrants from the former Soviet Union was made up of entire families rather than individuals. This provided an opportunity to examine the issue of migration and psychological distress more directly. A nationwide sample of 600 immigrants who arrived during the preceding year were interviewed in December 1990. Their psychological distress was measured by the PERI Demoralization questionnaire. For both gende

This study explores the explanatory models of major depression in a group of 40 recently immigrated Chinese-American women, and demonstrates the significant relationship between problem conceptualization and help-seeking behavior. Respondents are presented a vignette depicting major depression, from which they are asked to conceptualize the problem described and answer questions regarding its cause, impact and potential sources for help-seeking. Those who provide a psychological conceptualization are likely not to suggest professional services, but to turn to themselves and family and friends

This article suggests that social network concepts and methods can provide a unifying framework for social research on schizophrenia. A selective review of the literature indicates that a social network perspective is not only consistent with a range of other research approaches and findings, but may help resolve some basic and persistent methodological and conceptual problems. A theoretical model is briefly described which attributes a critical role in the onset and recurrence of schizophrenia to social network processes. Some examples are given of the potential contribution of social network

We assessed associations of total and group-specific ultra-processed food (UPF) intake with type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, overall and with a priori stratification by Hispanic/Latino heritage, US nativity, BMI categories, and diet quality measured by tertiles of the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI). Data entailed 8010 adults, completing follow-up (2014-17), and without baseline (2008-11) diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and/or cancer (mean follow-up: 5.8 years). Baseline 24-h dietary recalls and food propensity questionnaires as

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness is a major factor hindering the health of migrants. There is concern that social changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the acculturation gap with their host country, exacerbated loneliness among Vietnamese migrants in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the prevalence of loneliness and to evaluate the relationship with depressive and anxiety symptoms among Vietnamese migrants in Japan.
METHODS: We used a cross-sectional study design with a self-administered questionnaire. The data were collected from May 2 to June 6, 2022. The target populatio

PURPOSE: The connection between experiencing symptoms and identifying them as a pelvic floor disorder (PFD) among Latina women is not well understood. Self-identification of PFD is a critical first step toward timely diagnosis. This study investigated self-reported symptoms of urinary incontinence (UI), fecal incontinence (FI), and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) in community-dwelling Latina women in Los Angeles to assess whether cultural and psychosocial factors influence the self-identification of PFDs.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of community-dwelling Latina wo

BACKGROUND: Second-generation mothers (SGMs), born in European countries to foreign-born parents, represent a growing population. While disparities in maternal and neonatal health outcomes among first-generation migrants and natives are well documented, less is known about these outcomes among SGMs. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize evidence on maternal and neonatal health outcomes among SGMs, comparing them to both native-born women and first-generation migrants.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases up to December 2024, for studies reporting o

BACKGROUND: Significant disparities in mental health service utilization persist, particularly among Black adults in the United States. We focused on ethnic identity dimensions of centrality and assimilation and addressed their distinction from the commonly used term of acculturation.
METHOD: This study utilized gamma regression to examine the relationship between ethnic identity and help-seeking behavior within a large sample of Black adults (N = 1,117) and investigated the moderating effects of stigma-related barriers on this relationship.
RESULTS: The findings revealed statistically signi

Domestic violence is a pernicious social problem in the United States and a cause of national concern. The South Asian culture disempowers individuals experiencing domestic violence from recognizing and reporting victimization. Structural inequities may also discourage reporting victimization. These issues have led to inconsistent findings of domestic violence prevalence rates. Additionally, domestic violence studies with South Asians in the United States have predominantly focused on women, omitting men from this purview of research. The purpose of this study was to examine domestic violence

Background: Arab Americans are a historically understudied minority group in the United States and their health needs and risks have been poorly documented. We aim to provide an updated comprehensive review of the literature on Arab American physical and mental health and provide suggestions for future work in this field. Methods: A comprehensive review of the English language medical and public health literature published prior to 2017 identified through multiple database searches was conducted with search terms describing Arab Americans and health outcomes and behaviors. BACKGROUND: Health information and statistics for Black foreign-born women in the United States are under-reported or not available. Black foreign-born women typically are classified under the general category of African American, ignoring the heterogeneity that exists in the United States Black population. It is important to identify health issues and behaviors of African-born women to effectively address health disparities.
METHODS: Black African-born women (N = 29), 20 years or older completed a survey about general and women's health, health history, acculturation, lifestyle, social and h

BACKGROUND: Vietnamese American women represent one of the ethnic subgroups at great risk for cervical cancer in the United States. The underutilization of cervical cancer screening and the vulnerability of Vietnamese American women to cervical cancer may be compounded by their health beliefs.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the associations between factors of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese American women.
METHODS: Vietnamese American women (n=1,450) were enrolled into the randomized controlled trial (RCT) study who were rec

OBJECTIVES: Perinatal mortality rates vary between ethnic groups but the relation with immigrant status is unclear. Previous research suggested that birth outcomes may either improve or deteriorate with duration of residence, depending on the migrant group. The objectives of this study are to describe and measure inequalities in pregnancy outcomes, perinatal mortality and causes of perinatal deaths according to current citizenship versus national origin of the mother, in Brussels.

BACKGROUND: Overall, Latinas are more likely to be diagnosed with a more advanced stage of breast cancer and are 20% more likely to die of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. It is estimated that from 2003 to 2006, $82.0 billion in direct medical care expenditures, in addition to 100,000 lives annually, could be saved by eliminating health disparities experienced by Latinos and increasing the use of up to 5 preventive services in the United States. An additional 3700 lives could be saved if 90% of women aged ≥40 years were recently screened for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies are needed to resolve inconsistencies in previous findings regarding antecedents of alcoholism.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate genetic and environmental risk factors for alcoholism.
DESIGN: A 4-year longitudinal cohort study.
