Renal denervation improves sodium excretion in rats with chronic heart failure: effects on expression of renal ENaC and AQP2.

Previously we have shown that increased expression of renal epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) may contribute to the renal sodium and water retention observed during chronic heart failure (CHF). The goal of this study was to examine whether renal denervation (RDN) changed the expressions of renal sodium transporters ENaC, sodium-hydrogen exchanger-3 proteins (NHE3), and water channel aquaporin 2 (AQP2) in rats with CHF. CHF was produced by left coronary artery ligation in rats. Four weeks after ligation surgery, surgical bilateral RDN was performed. The expression of ENaC, NHE3, and AQP2 in bot

Gastric distension causes changes in heart rate and arterial blood pressure by affecting the crosstalk between vagal and splanchnic systems in anesthetised rats.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Various hindbrain nuclei have been demonstrated to be involved in the control of the cardiovascular reflexes elicited by both non-noxious and noxious gastric distension, through parasympathetic and sympathetic activation. The different role played by the branches of autonomic nervous system in exerting these effects and their crosstalk in relation to low-/high-pressure distension rate has not been examined yet. Therefore, in the present work, monolateral and bilateral vagotomy and splanchnicotomy were performed in anesthetised rats to analyse the involvement of hindbrain nuclei in haemodynamic

Pulmonary vein isolation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is associated with regional cardiac sympathetic denervation.

BACKGROUND: Circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the cornerstone of the current state-of-the-art management of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the precise mechanisms behind AF relapses post PVI are still unknown. Since the activity of the autonomous nervous system is crucial in triggering paroxysmal AF, we hypothesized that PVI is associated with changes of cardiac sympathetic activity. METHODS: Sixteen patients with paroxysmal AF underwent cardiac iodine-123-meta-iodobenzylguanidine (123I-mIBG) planar cardiac imaging and single-photon emission computed tomography with low-dos

Diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy: a distinct syndrome expanding the spectrum of diabetic radiculoplexus neuropathies.

Diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy is a subacute painful, asymmetrical lower limb neuropathy due to ischaemic injury and microvasculitis. The occurrence of a cervical diabetic radiculoplexus neuropathy has been postulated. Our objective was to characterize the clinical features and pathological alterations of diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy, to see if they are similar to diabetic lumbosacral radiculoplexus neuropathy and due to ischaemic injury and microvasculitis. We identified patients with diabetic cervical radiculoplexus neuropathy by review of the Mayo Clinic datab

Melatonin-evoked in vivo secretion of protein and amylase from the parotid gland of the anaesthetised rat.

The intravenous infusion of melatonin (5 and 25 mg/kg over 10 min) evoked a dose-dependent output of protein and amylase but no overt fluid secretion from the parotid gland of the pentobarbitone-anaesthetised rat, as revealed by increased concentrations of protein and amylase activity in a subsequent wash-out flow of saliva in response to an intravenous bolus injection of methacholine (5 microg/kg) 10 min later. The secretory responses to melatonin occurred in the presence of alpha- and beta-adrenoceptor antagonists. They were not affected by the cholecystokinin A-receptor antagonist, lorglumi

Intrahepatic adenosine triggers a hepatorenal reflex to regulate renal sodium and water excretion.

The mechanism for water and sodium retention in liver cirrhosis is related to the disturbance in hepatic portal circulation. We hypothesize that the increases in intraportal adenosine, which occur when the portal blood flow decreases, may trigger the hepatorenal reflex to inhibit renal water and sodium excretion. In anesthetized rats, intravenous vs. intraportal adenosine-induced effect on renal water and sodium excretion was compared in normal animals and animals with hepatic or renal denervation, and in the presence of an adenosine receptor antagonist. Compared to saline infusion, intraporta

Neural mechanisms accounting for the increase in blood pressure and heart rate during vagino-cervical stimulation.

The rise in blood pressure and heart rate produced by the mechanical stimulation of the uterine cervix (VS) was examined after adrenalectomy, after pelvic or hypogastric neurectomies or after spinal cord transection in anesthetized rats. Neither adrenalectomy, nor hypogastric neurectomy prevented the rise in heart rate and blood pressure produced by VS. After the spinal cord transection at T6 level, VS was still able to produce the rise in blood pressure. However, the rise in blood pressure was significantly lower than that produced in the same animals before the transection. No changes in hea

Ganglion cells in arterioles of skeletal muscle: role in sympathetic vasodilation.

Ganglion cells were found in arterioles of gracilis muscles of dogs 2 wk after complete extrinsic denervation. We tested the possibility that they function in active sympathetic vasodilation (SVD) induced in isolated gracilis muscles by hypothalamic stimulation. To this end various drugs were injected into the gracilis perfusate. (Drugs did not reach the systemic circulation, and exerted their effects within the gracilis itself). C6 had no effect. Submaximal doses of atropine or l-hyoscyamine delayed and slowed SVD; higher doses blocked completely. d-Hyoscyamine did not change SVD or acetylcho

Ethanol infusion into the vein of Marshall reduced atrial tachyarrhythmia recurrence during catheter ablation: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ethanol infusion into the vein of Marshall (EIVoM) may increase mitral isthmus bidirectional block (MIBB) and cause local autonomic denervation that may improve outcome. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate whether the addition of EIVoM to atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation led to a better outcome. METHODS: Systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Europe PMC for studies that compared the addition of EIVoM during AF ablation with radiofrequency ablation. The primary outcome was atrial tachyarrhythmia (ATa) recurrence, defined

Quantification of Large Transmural Biopsies Reveals Heterogeneity in Innervation Patterns in Chronic Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal cardiac innervation plays an important role in arrhythmogenicity after myocardial infarction (MI). Data regarding reperfusion models and innervation abnormalities in the medium to long term after MI are sparse. Histologic quantification of the small-sized cardiac nerves is challenging, and transmural analysis has not been performed. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess cardiac innervation patterns in transmural biopsy sections in a porcine reperfusion model of MI (MI-R) using a novel method for nerve quantification. METHODS: Transmural biopsy sections from 4 swine (n

Correlation Between Corneal Nerve Density and Symptoms of Small Fiber Neuropathy in Patients With Fibromyalgia: The Confounding Role of Severe Anxiety or Depression.

OBJECTIVE: A consistent line of investigation proposes fibromyalgia as a dysautonomia-associated neuropathic pain syndrome. Comorbid anxiety or depression amplifies fibromyalgia symptoms. The recent recognition of small fiber neuropathy in fibromyalgia patients supports the neuropathic nature of the illness. Corneal confocal microscopy accurately identifies small nerve fiber pathology. The newly developed Small-Fiber Symptom Survey captures the spectrum of small fiber neuropathy symptoms. We aimed to correlate corneal nerve density with different fibromyalgia disease severity questionnaires in

Local sympathetic denervation in painful diabetic neuropathy.

This study assessed whether painful diabetic neuropathy is associated with abnormal sympathetic nervous function in the affected limbs. Nine patients with diabetes (four men, five women; age 61 +/- 7 years) and painful peripheral neuropathy of the feet, but without evidence of generalized autonomic neuropathy, underwent intravenous infusion of tritiated norepinephrine (NE) and sampling of arterial and venous blood in both feet and in one arm to quantify the rate of entry of NE into the local venous plasma (NE spillover). In the same patients, positron emission tomography (PET) scanning after i

Depression in the prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease: Clinical manifestations, biomarker evidence, and predictive implications.

Depression is one of the earliest and most frequent non-motor symptoms in the prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease (PD), often preceding motor signs by years to decades. This review synthesizes epidemiological, neuroimaging, biomarker, and genetic evidence to clarify whether depression is a risk factor, a direct prodromal manifestation, or both. Meta-analyses consistently show a two-fold increased risk of subsequent PD in individuals with depressive symptoms or major depressive disorder (MDD), with the highest risk occurring within 1-2 years of diagnosis but persisting for up to 25 years. Peripheral nerve remodeling in the tumor microenvironment: neuro-immune crosstalk, molecular mechanisms, and precision therapeutic.

As a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment, the nervous system modulates tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Conversely, tumors actively hijack and reshape neural structures to activate nerve-dependent developmental and regenerative processes that promote their own growth and survival. Despite extensive progress in tumor-neural crosstalk, the molecular mechanisms underlying neuro-immune coordination in peripheral nerve remodeling remain incompletely understood, and integrated strategies targeting this axis to overcome immunotherapy resistance are still lacking. This review

Favorable Effects of Renal Denervation in Hypertension-Related Comorbidities. A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Renal denervation (RDN) according to the latest ESH guidelines can be considered as a treatment option for patients with resistant hypertension. However, excess sympathetic nervous system activity constitutes an underlying pathophysiological mechanism in many disorders other than arterial hypertension. AIMS: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the therapeutic effects of RDN beyond arterial hypertension. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane) were searched for stud

Hypertension and Device-Based Therapies for Resistant Hypertension: An Up-to-Date Review.

Hypertension is the most prevalent modifiable risk factor associated with cardiovascular mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that hypertension directly or indirectly causes the death of at least nine million people globally every year. The number of people living with hypertension (blood pressure (BP) of ≥140 mmHg systolic or ≥90 mmHg diastolic or on medication) doubled between 1990 and 2019, from 650 million to 1.3 billion. Despite a plethora of antihypertensive drugs widely available, a sizable part of the antihypertensive population stays uncontrolled. The unmet need of
