Prospective Evaluation of a Topical Botanical Skin Care Regimen on Mild to Moderate Facial and Truncal Acne and Mood.

Acne vulgaris is a common inflammatory condition that can be associated with profound psychosocial impacts. Conventional treatment includes topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antimicrobials, and some may cause irritation and skin dryness. In this 8-week open-label study, we examined the effects of a botanical skin care regimen (Codex Labs Shaant Balancing regimen) on mild to moderate facial and truncal acne. Twenty-four male and female subjects between the ages of 12 and 45 years were assessed for eligibility, 20 were enrolled, and 15 completed all study visits. Facial and truncal acne l

The management of acne vulgaris in young people in primary care: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris (acne) is common among young persons (YPs). Clinical practice guidelines are available for acne management to minimize their physical and psychological impact. However, evidence of adherence to these guidelines is sparse in primary care practices. The study aimed to determine the demographic profile of YPs who sought primary care consultations for acne, their related prescriptions and referrals to specialists for further management. METHOD: A retrospective study was conducted using data from a cluster of eight public primary care clinics in Singapore. Demographic, cl

From pathogenesis of acne vulgaris to anti-acne agents.

Acne vulgaris is a cutaneous chronic inflammatory disorder with complex pathogenesis. Four factors play vital roles in acne pathophysiology: hyperseborrhea and dysseborrhea, altered keratinization of the pilosebaceous duct, Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) and inflammation. The main hormones responsible for the development of acne vulgaris include androgens, insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1. Other factors involved in this process are corticotropin-releasing hormone, α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and substance P. Systematic review on the rapidity of the onset of action of topical treatments in the therapy of mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris.

The time until a patient achieves a relevant improvement during the treatment of a skin disease is important for selecting a therapy, but has been largely neglected in reviews and guidelines. The aim of this systematic review was to determine the time until the onset of action (TOA) of topical acne treatments. The primary outcome was the TOA defined as the time until a 25% reduction in the mean number of inflammatory lesions had been achieved. A systematic literature search in Medline and Embase was carried out. Clinical trials that evaluated head-to-head comparisons of treatments in patients

Combination therapy with retinaldehyde (0.1%) glycolic acid (6%) and efectiose (0.1%) in mild to moderate acne vulgaris during the period of sun exposure--efficacy and skin tolerability.

OBJECTIVES: Acne vulgaris is the most common disease of the adolescence age (70-94%). Main topical treatments for acne vulgaris are retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics in mono or combination therapy. Topical retinoids, some antibiotics and antiseptics although effective on acne lesions, can due photosensitivity or make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Our study is aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a combination therapy with Retinaldheyde (0.1%), Glycolic acid (6%) and Efectiose (0.1%) (RGE) cream in patients affected by acne vulgaris, during the lasting period of su

Antibacterial activity of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus.

New compounds are needed to treat acne and superficial infections caused by Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus due to the reduced effectiveness of agents used at present. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are attracting attention as potential new topical treatments for Gram-positive infections due to their antimicrobial potency and anti-inflammatory properties. This present study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of six LC-PUFAs against P. acnes and S. aureus to evaluate their potential to treat infections caused by these pathogens. How patients experience and manage dryness and irritation from acne treatment.

BACKGROUND: Products that may cause irritation are widely used to treat acne. Irritation has the potential to reduce treatment adherence. How patients manage irritation and dryness is not well characterized. OBJECTIVES: To study self-reported irritation, its impact and coping mechanisms in patients who had been treated for acne with a clindamycin-5% benzoyl peroxide (BPO) product. METHODS: An Internet-based survey of 200 subjects, aged 15-40 years who had used a clindamycin-5% BPO fixed combination product in the last six months on at least 50 percent of their face, at least five days per we

An expert view on the treatment of acne with systemic antibiotics and/or oral isotretinoin in the light of the new European recommendations.

In 2003 the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products amended the summary product characteristics for oral isotretinoin to standardise information provided from the different countries of the European Community. The Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products recommended that among others, exclusively severe forms of acne (such as nodular or conglobate acne or acne at risk of permanent scarring) resistant to "adequate courses" of standard therapy with systemic antibacterials and local therapy should benefit from oral isotretinoin. However, no indication was provided on what wer

Dermatology: how to manage acne in skin of colour.

Acne vulgaris is a prevalent dermatological condition worldwide but is especially challenging to treat in individuals with skin of colour (SOC). Corresponding to Fitzpatrick skin phototypes III-VI, people of African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Hispanic ethnicity are considered to have SOC. With the additional risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) as a consequence of inflammatory acne or its respective treatment, managing acne in this population holds significant importance. PIH adversely impacts self-esteem and quality of life and, thus, is usually the patient's priority of treatment

Short-term combination therapy and long-term relapse prevention in the treatment of severe acne vulgaris.

Few long-term treatment regimens for severe acne vulgaris have been investigated in clinical trials. Data were combined from two consecutive, randomized, double-blind, controlled studies to evaluate the efficacy, safety and subject satisfaction of four nine-month regimens in severe acne vulgaris treatment. Subjects were first randomized to receive doxycycline (DCN) and adapalene 0.1% - benzoyl peroxide 2.5% (A/BPO) or vehicle once daily for 12 weeks. Subjects who had at least 50% global improvement were subsequently randomized to receive A/BPO or its vehicle once daily for 24 weeks. Over nine

What's new in acne? An analysis of systematic reviews published in 2009-2010.

This review highlights clinically important findings about acne treatment identified in nine systematic reviews published or indexed in the period March 2009 to February 2010. A systematic review of dietary influences on acne suggested that a possible role of dietary factors in acne cannot be dismissed, as the studies to date have not been sufficiently large or robust. Another review looked at benzoyl peroxide, which may be enjoying a comeback because of increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and suggested that there was a lack of evidence that stronger preparations were more effectiv

Improvement of cystic fibrosis during treatment with isotretinoin.

A 15-year-old boy with a history significant for multiple respiratory infections since birth presented for evaluation of acne vulgaris. He was initially prescribed doxycycline, topical tretinoin, and topical clindamycin solution, with the later addition of a benzoyl peroxide preparation to his regimen. The patient returned 6 months later after having been diagnosed with CF (cystic fibrosis) by sweat testing and genetic testing. His skin condition had not responded adequately to prior therapy, so all acne medications were discontinued. The 84-kg patient was started on 80 mg (0.95 mg/kg/d) of is

[Gram-negative bacteria folliculitis].

Gram-negative folliculitis was first described in 1968 and had since given rise to numerous publications. To our knowledge, no case has yet been published in France, although we observed 6 of them in 12 months. Between March, 1985 and March, 1986, samples of pus for bacteriological examination were obtained from all our patients with acnea vulgaris resistant to the standard treatment (i.e. oral tetracycline combined with topical applications of tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide), thus enabling us to detect patients who had a Gram-negative bacillus (GNB) in at least one pustule. Isotretinoin: new therapy for severe acne.

The chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, clinical use, adverse effects, dosage and administration, and FDA-approved indications of isotretinoin, a new agent used for treating acne, are reviewed. Isotretinoin is a synthetic retinoid compound with pharmacologic actions similar to those of other retinoids. Isotretinoin's effects on nodulocystic acne lesions apparently result from its reduction of the size of sebaceous glands, inhibition of sebum production, and inhibition of follicular keratinization. Isotretinoin is administered orally; peak serum drug concentrations occur approximately th
