BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether subjective daytime sleepiness or objective napping could precede the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) in the long term.
METHODS: We studied 2920 men (mean age 76 years) without a history of PD and followed them for 11 years. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) was defined as having an Epworth Sleepiness Scale score >10. Objective naps were defined as ≥5 consecutive minutes of inactivity as measured by actigraphy, and napping duration was the accumulated time of naps outside the main sleep period. We used logistic regression to compare PD risk across four group

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that sleep disturbance is common in psoriasis. While several sleep investigations have been conducted in psoriasis populations, many have methodological shortcomings, and no study has examined multiple dimensions of sleep-wake functioning. Moreover, research has yet to be performed comprehensively examining the range of physical and psychological factors that may affect sleep in people with psoriasis.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize sleep disturbance using validated measures and to identify physical and psychological predictors of sleep quality in people with psorias

BACKGROUND: Sleep timing reflects daily routines and lifestyle patterns, which influence cardiovascular health through circadian mechanisms that regulate cardiovascular processes. Wearable devices enable sensor-based assessment of sleep timing, offering insights into daily behavior. This cohort study examined how the regularity of wearable device–determined sleep timing (bedtime, wake-up time, and sleep midpoint) predicts incident major adverse cardiac event (MACE) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality over a 10-year follow-up in midlife. METHODS: The study included 3,231 participants (39

OBJECTIVES: Methods for analyzing sleep as a dyadic behavior remain relatively unexplored. We aimed to (1) characterize how bedpartners influence each other's sleep, and (2) identify factors that predict sensitivity to wake transmission between bedpartners.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Community members in Melbourne, Australia.
PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-five couples without sleep disorders, aged 18-72 years.
MEASUREMENTS: Participants completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, reduced version. Habitual sleep/wake patterns were monitored for seven nights via actigraphy and sl

During puberty, there is a delay in sleep patterns and the circadian clock, and the prevalence of sleep difficulties is high among young adults. Thus, it is important to be able to measure chronotype (CT) in this group, both in the clinic and for broader epidemiological studies, to better understand the sleep difficulties observed. The reduced version of one of the most widely used questionnaire to measure CT, the Horne & Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), has been developed and validated in many languages. The aim of the present study was to investigate the reliability and v

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances in children and adolescents are a frequent reason for consultation in pediatrics, primary care, and child and adolescent psychiatry. Their clinical presentation is heterogeneous and lies at the intersection of developmental, circadian, behavioral, psychological, and family-related factors. The aim of this review is to provide a structured clinical synthesis of the main sleep disorders in children and adolescents, as well as updated principles of their management.
METHODS: This narrative review is based on a critical synthesis of the literature and other refere

Melatonin is secreted systemically from the pineal gland maximally at night but is also produced locally in many tissues. Its chronobiological function is mainly exerted by pineal melatonin. It is a feedback regulator of the main circadian pacemaker in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei and of many peripheral oscillators. Although exogenous melatonin is approved for circadian rhythm sleep disorders and old-age insomnia, research on endogenous melatonin in humans is hindered by the great interindividual variability of its amount and circadian rhythm. Single case studies on pinealectomized

UNLABELLED: To examine the association between combined circadian imbalance related traits and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) disease risk, and their potential interaction with night shift work. This study included 191,764 UK Biobank participants without major chronic diseases who were employed at baseline (2006–2010). The Circadian Imbalance Index (CII) was developed by combining several factors indicative of a propensity for circadian misalignment. One point was assigned for each of the following components if present: evening chronotype, sleep duration ≤ 6 or ≥ 9 h/day, high neurotic

Sleep banking, i.e., preemptively obtaining extra sleep prior to anticipated sleep loss, has been proposed as a strategy to reduce the cognitive and physiological consequences of sleep deprivation. However, our understanding remains incomplete regarding the effectiveness of preemptive sleep extension in enhancing resilience to sleep loss. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase for studies published between 2004 and 2025. Following a comprehensive literature search, we identified 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria-seven primary experimental tria

This study aimed to explore the relationship between shift-working nurses' social jetlag and body mass index (BMI) and provide a theoretical basis for nursing managers to develop appropriate health interventions. Shift work is unavoidable in nursing and is associated with circadian rhythm disorders. Social jetlag is prevalent in shift-working nurses and is associated with adverse health outcomes (particularly metabolism-related indicators). BMI is a significant metabolic indicator, and research has demonstrated its effectiveness in predicting the formation of metabolic syndrome. The relationsh

Decline in cognitive functioning in the workplace is a major concern for health care systems. Understanding factors associated with nighttime functioning is imperative for instituting organizational risk management policies and developing personalized countermeasures. The present study aims to identify individual factors associated with cognitive functioning during the night shift of hospital nurses working on irregular rotating-shift schedules. Ninety-two female nurses were recruited from 17 wards in two general hospitals, using convenience sampling by clusters. Inclusion criteria were workin

BACKGROUND: Whether a population-scale lifestyle-anchored inflammatory load index and its circulating metabolomic risk signature identify susceptibility to hospital-recorded acute respiratory infections (ARIs) has not been well established. This study examined these questions in the UK Biobank using the Circadian Imbalance Index (CII) and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-derived metabolomic risk signature (MRS).
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 295,679 UK Biobank participants after prespecified exclusions. The CII was derived from five baseline components: evening chronotype,

Disruptions in circadian rhythms have been linked to adverse metabolic outcomes. This study investigated the relationship between circadian parameters of wrist temperature (wT) and lipid profiles in Arctic residents, a population characterized by extreme photoperiodic variation. We examined associations between the MESOR, amplitude and acrophase of wT and total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and the TG/HDL-C ratio in both Native (N) and non-Native (NN) individuals, utilizing photoperiod-adjusted regression models.
