Enhanced antimicrobial and biofilm disruption efficacy of the encapsulated Thymus pallidus and Lavandula stoechas essential oils and their mixture: A synergistic approach.

The antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of plant essential oils (EOs) have aroused significant interest for their potential as effective alternatives or supplements in combating microbial infections and biofilm-associated challenges. For these applications, EOs must be encapsulated to overcome some key technical limitations, including high volatility, poor stability, and low solubility. This study aimed to develop microencapsulated EOs derived from two valuable Moroccan medicinal plants, Lavandula stoechas L. and Thymus pallidus Batt., both individually and in combination, using the spray

Highly Active, Entirely Biobased Antimicrobial Pickering Emulsions.

We present the development of surfactant-free, silica-free and fully biobased oil-in-water antimicrobial Pickering emulsions, based on the self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin and phytoantimicrobial oils (terpinen-4-ol or carvacrol). Undecylenic acid (UA), derived from castor oil, can be used as bio-based drug to treat fungal infection, but is less effective than petroleum-based drugs as azole derivatives. To maximize its antifungal potential, we have incorporated UA in fully biobased Pickering emulsions. These emulsions are effective against fungi, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The car

Activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 channel (TRPV3) aggravated pathological cardiac hypertrophy via calcineurin/NFATc3 pathway in rats.

Cardiac hypertrophy is a compensatory response to mechanical stimuli and neurohormonal factors, ultimately progresses to heart failure. The proteins of some transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, Ca2+ -permeable nonselective cation channel, are highly expressed in cardiomyocytes, and associated with the occurrence of cardiac hypertrophy. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) is a member of TRP, however, the functional role of TRPV3 in cardiac hypertrophy remains unclear. TRPV3 was elevated in pathological cardiac hypertrophy, but not in swimming exercise-induced physiological

A comparative study of the antioxidant/prooxidant effects of carvacrol and thymol at various concentrations on membrane and DNA of parental and drug resistant H1299 cells.

Carvacrol and thymol, both used as flavor agents in cosmetic and food products, have prooxidant and antioxidant activities. To clarify the mechanisms of their cytotoxicity and the factors affecting their antioxidant/prooxidant activities, we investigated cell membrane and DNA damage induced by carvacrol and thymol in parental and drug-resistant human lung cancer cell lines. After 24 and 48 hour incubation periods, the cytotoxicity of carvacrol (IC50 380 and 244 microM) was found to be higher than that of thymol (IC50 497 and 266 microM) in parental cells. However, thymol showed higher cytotoxi

Breath volatilome analysis reveals new gut microbiome-related metabolites that discriminate high versus low dietary fibre intake.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gut bacteria produce a wide variety of metabolites that are playing important roles in human health. Dietary fibres (DF) are beneficial nutrients that have been shown to modulate key intestinal functions when fermented by gut bacteria. Since most bacteria-derived metabolites are volatile, their presence in exhaled breath allows to propose new non-invasive methods to study DF-microbiome interactions in humans. We aimed to identify potential novel biomarkers of gut microbiota activity released in exhaled breath following the consumption of DF at breakfast, upon untargeted anal

Cuminaldehyde potentiates the antimicrobial actions of ciprofloxacin against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are important agents of urinary tract infections that can often evolve to severe infections. The rise of antibiotic-resistant strains has driven the search for novel therapies to replace the use or act as adjuvants of antibiotics. In this context, plant-derived compounds have been widely investigated. Cuminaldehyde is suggested as the major antimicrobial compound of the cumin seed essential oil. However, this effect is not fully understood. Herein, we investigated the in silico and in vitro activities of cuminaldehyde, as well as its ability to potent
