Which mechanical and physical testing methods are relevant for predicting the clinical performance of ceramic-based dental prostheses?

PURPOSE: The survival and performance of clinical prostheses with a ceramic component are probabilistic in nature. Only under very rare circumstances will all of the prostheses in a group exhibit either 100% successes or 100% failures over a period of 5 years or more. Prosthesis failure may be defined as any condition that leads to replacement. These conditions include secondary caries, irreversible pulpitis, excessive wear of opposing tooth surfaces, excessive erosion and roughening of the ceramic surface, ditching of the cement margin, unacceptable esthetics, cracking, chipping and fracture.

[Ridge preservation after tooth extraction: what do we know today].

Following tooth removal, varying amounts of bone resorption take place due to qualitative and quantitative changes that occur at the alveolar bone around the extraction site. Alveolar bone is a tooth dependent structure and therefore, after a tooth is extracted, dimensional bone reduction takes place both, horizontally and vertically resulting in changes that may lead to esthetic and functional problems. Such deformities of the alveolar ridge may compromise future implant placement as well as esthetic results when a fixed partial denture is constructed in a visible area. In order to preserve r

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS): A review and case report.

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS) is a rare, autosomal dominant condition characterized by ocular, craniofacial, dental, and periumbilical abnormalities. Relatively little information exists on this syndrome within the dental literature despite the fact that midface hypoplasia and maxillary hypodontia are classical presenting features of this syndrome. This is a case report of a 7-year-old Caucasian female with ARS who presented with significant ocular and dental anomalies. She was also found to have osteopenia. Her dental condition is described, her immediate treatment is shown, and her long-ter

Relationship of obstructive sleep apnea with periodontal condition and its local and systemic risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and periodontitis share risk factors, such as age, obesity, stress, and cardiovascular events, which have a bidirectional cause-effect relationship through systemic inflammation. Our objective was to determine the relationship between OSA and the periodontal condition and its associated local and systemic risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an observational case-control study involving 60 patients. Local oral risk factors and the systemic condition of each patient were evaluated. All patients underwent polysomnography for the diagnosis of OSA.

Clinical outcomes of zirconia implants supporting multi-unit and complete arch prostheses: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although zirconia implants (ZIs) have demonstrated favorable outcomes for single crowns in low-load regions, their performance in more demanding prosthetic scenarios such as supporting fixed partial dentures (FPDs) and complete arch prostheses remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis was to assess the clinical outcomes of ZIs supporting 3-unit FPDs or complete dentures (fixed or removable), including survival and success rates, marginal bone loss (MBL), and reported complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This SR followed the p

A survey of general dental practitioners in the North West of England concerning the dental care of patients following head and neck radiotherapy.

AIMS: The aim of this survey was to investigate the views of general dental practitioners (GDPs) on their perceived roles and the barriers regarding dental care of patients following head and neck radio-therapy. METHODS: From a total of 1163 GDPs on the Mersey Postgraduate Dental Deanery mailing list, 369 were selected at random. Questionnaires were sent out in February 2010 followed by reminders a month later. A study-specific questionnaire was piloted prior to the survey. RESULTS: One hundred and ninety-eight of the potential 336 respondents returned valid questionnaires, a response rate o

White discharge formation following a subepithelial connective tissue graft for anterior fixed partial denture pontics: A case report based on clinical and histological findings.

PATIENT: A 54-year-old woman presenting with anterior alveolar ridge resorption was submitted to a connective tissue graft (CTG) for esthetic improvement before rehabilitation with a fixed partial denture. Palate-harvested connective tissue was used as a graft after extra-oral removal of the epithelium. Unexpectedly, complete wound healing was not observed. Moreover, 6 months post-surgery, a white discharge was detected at the grafted site. The adjacent tooth showing a root fracture was initially associated with the symptoms and was then extracted. Concomitantly, the unhealed tissue at the gra

Cone-beam CT analysis of temporomandibular joint morphology before and after rehabilitation in patients with Kennedy class II partial edentulism.

Partial edentulism alters occlusal loading and may affect temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology. This prospective comparative study evaluated whether implant-supported fixed prostheses and removable partial dentures (RPDs) differentially restore TMJ joint-space distribution in Kennedy Class II cases using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Thirty adults with unilateral free-end edentulism (loss of 2-3 posterior units) received either implant-supported fixed restorations (n = 15) or RPDs (n = 15); fifteen dentally healthy adults served as controls. CBCT scans were obtained at two time poi

The use of PEEK as an occlusal splint in a patient with histaminosis: A case report.

Poly-(etheretherketone) (PEEK) began to be used in the field of odontology more than 10 years ago, especially in relation to the creation of removable partial dentures. Here we report the case of a 62 years old woman diagnosed with histamine intolerance (or histaminosis), who presented a very particular set of oral symptoms. She described a certain tingling, burning, and swelling of the mucous membranes. These symptoms seem to be linked with the wearing of a resin occlusal splint which was initially prescribed to compensate for the absence of a meniscus in the left temporomandibular joint of t

The implant-supported milled-bar mandibular overdenture.

Osseointegrated dental implants have been proven successful in the treatment of edentulism. The predictability of the implant-supported prosthesis has also been established. Several techniques have been described for the successful restoration of the edentulous mandible: fixed-detachable prostheses with either the original Brånemark hybrid prosthesis design or conventional implant-supported fixed partial dentures, implant-retained overdentures, and implant-supported overdentures. However, in cases of advanced ridge resorption in which facial tissue support is needed from the flanges of the pro

Mandibular Reconstruction Based on the Concept of Double Arc Reconstruction.

The natural mandible has 2 arcs, the marginal arc and the occlusal arc. The marginal arc is situated along the lower margin of the mandible and affects the contour of the lower third of the face. The occlusal arc is situated along the dental arc and affects the stability of prosthodontics. The gap between these 2 arcs widens in the molar area. Our developed concept of "double arc reconstruction" involves making these 2 arcs for the reconstructed mandible. For the double-barrel fibula reconstruction, 2 bone segments are used to make both arcs. For reconstructions using the iliac crest, the doub

The prosthetic rehabilitation of a panfacial fracture patient after reduction: a clinical report.

Panfacial fractures involve trauma to the lower, middle, and upper facial bones and often require a team approach for management. Early and complete restoration of preinjury facial contours and function should be the goal of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. When the intraoral landmarks are lost, overall facial anatomic landmarks can be used to restore the oral cavity. A patient with complex clinical panfacial fractures, including a vertically and horizontally malpositioned native alveolar bone and severe facial asymmetry, is presented. A functional and esthetic rehabi

Split-thickness skin grafts directly to bone for marginal mandibulectomy reconstruction: a case series.

Oncologic resection of oral cavity malignancies can result in defects requiring epithelial coverage. While microvascular free flaps are considered the gold standard, split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs) offer a simpler alternative for selected marginal mandibulectomy defects and patients. This case series describes the use of STSGs to reconstruct marginal mandibulectomy defects at a tertiary Australian head and neck oncology service between April 2019 and October 2024. Eleven patients underwent resection and immediate reconstruction with STSGs. Bolstering techniques included prefabricated parti
