The present study was designed to compare phase I and phase II biotransformation reactions in immobilized perfused hepatocytes as a cellular system obtained from inbred rat strains which represent models for some cardiovascular diseases, namely, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), rats sensitive and resistant to isoprenaline-induced myocardial lesions (IS and IR, respectively) as compared to Wistar rats (W). Ciprofloxacin (10 mg/kg body weight, iv, twice daily for 4 days) failed to alter specific antibody titres, total immunoglobulin concentration, total serum protein concentration, total leukocyte count, lymphocyte percentage, phagocytic index and skin thickness in DNCB skin sensitivity test against Brucella plain killed antigen in New Zealand White rabbits. This study was carried out on 80 patients undergoing tonsillectomy for chronic tonsillitis. Twenty healthy school children in the same age group were investigated for control values. Ten children were also available for evaluation of any immunological change after tonsillectomy. No significant variation was seen in the serum IgG, IgA, and IgM levels before and after tonsillectomy. Immunologic studies were performed in two patients with sarcoidosis, who developed cryptococcosis. Polymorphonuclear leukocyte function, complement, and serum antibodies were normal. Both patients had depressed cell-mediated immunity (cmi) to Cryptococcus neoformans and other antigens that persisted after therapy for their infection.
