Lower limb deficient children in The Netherlands: epidemiological aspects.

Information on the characteristics of children with limb deficiencies and amputations in The Netherlands is largely lacking. The present study aimed to collect data about the prevalence of congenital deficiencies, the ratio of congenital to acquired limb deficiencies, types of lower leg deficiency or amputation and male/female ratios. Data were obtained from a regional birth defects registry for the northern part of The Netherlands (EUROCAT-NNL) and from a national survey. Inclusion criteria for the selection of the EUROCAT data were: children/foetuses with lower leg deficiencies born in 1981-

Single Medial vs 2-Incision Approach for Double Hindfoot Arthrodesis: Is There a Difference in Joint Preparation?

BACKGROUND: Double hindfoot arthrodesis is a reliable treatment option in lower extremity deformity and arthritis. Single (medial) and 2-incision techniques have been described. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent of cartilage debrided in each approach and to evaluate the competency of the deltoid ligament. METHODS: Eight matched pairs of cadaveric specimens were acquired. One limb from each pair was randomly assigned to the single medial incision and the other to the 2-incision technique. Stress radiographs were obtained prior to dissection to evaluate for valgus tibiotalar

Cartilaginous epiphyses in extant archosaurs and their implications for reconstructing limb function in dinosaurs.

Extinct archosaurs, including many non-avian dinosaurs, exhibit relatively simply shaped condylar regions in their appendicular bones, suggesting potentially large amounts of unpreserved epiphyseal (articular) cartilage. This "lost anatomy" is often underappreciated such that the ends of bones are typically considered to be the joint surfaces, potentially having a major impact on functional interpretation. Extant alligators and birds were used to establish an objective basis for inferences about cartilaginous articular structures in such extinct archosaur clades as non-avian dinosaurs. Limb el

The effect of fibular malreduction on contact pressures in an ankle fracture malunion model.

Nine fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were disarticulated through the knee, and the soft tissues, except for the interosseous ligaments and interosseous membrane, were removed to the level of the ankle. The subtalar joint was secured with screws in neutral position (approximately 5 degrees of valgus). Contact pressures in the tibiotalar joint were measured with use of low-grade pressure-sensitive film, which was placed through an anterior capsulotomy. For each measurement, 700 newtons of load was applied to the specimen for one minute. The film imprints were scanned, and the contact pressures

Primary prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in people undergoing major amputation of the lower extremity.

BACKGROUND: People undergoing major amputation of the lower limb are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Risk factors for VTE in amputees include advanced age, sedentary lifestyle, longstanding arterial disease and an identifiable hypercoagulable condition. Evidence suggests that pharmacological prophylaxis (e.g. heparin, factor Xa inhibitors, vitamin K antagonists, direct thrombin inhibitors, antiplatelets) is effective in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but is associated with an increased risk of bleeding. Mechanical prophylaxis (e.g. antiembolism stockings, intermitten

Management of dead limb following traditional practices in Indonesia: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional bone setting, a centuries-old practice, remains a common method for treating musculoskeletal injuries in many parts of the world, particularly in developing regions. In Indonesia, traditional bone-setters are widely sought after in managing various bone and joint conditions. Despite the widespread use of traditional bone settings, there is limited documentation of their treatment outcomes and potential complications. Complications such as a necrotic limb due to vascular interruption as shown in our case are common complications of fracture reduction by individuals who

All-Suture Anchor Repair of the Flexor Digitorum Profundus Insertion: A Biomechanical Comparison of 2 Suturing Techniques.

PURPOSE: We compared 2 suturing techniques for reattachment of the flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) via all-suture anchor. METHODS: We used fresh, matched-pair, cadaveric hands. We disarticulated the fingers at the proximal interphalangeal joints, preserving the proximal FDP. We released the FDPs at their distal insertion and placed an all-suture, 1.0-mm anchor at the center of each FDP footprint. Each anchor's sutures were used to reattach each FDP using 1 of 2 techniques: group H (n = 14) via horizontal mattress; group H + K (n = 12) via horizontal mattress with knots thrown and, with each

EEG-Based BCI Control Schemes for Lower-Limb Assistive-Robots.

Over recent years, brain-computer interface (BCI) has emerged as an alternative communication system between the human brain and an output device. Deciphered intents, after detecting electrical signals from the human scalp, are translated into control commands used to operate external devices, computer displays and virtual objects in the real-time. BCI provides an augmentative communication by creating a muscle-free channel between the brain and the output devices, primarily for subjects having neuromotor disorders, or trauma to nervous system, notably spinal cord injuries (SCI), and subjects

Healing of Experimentally Created Non-Union of Femur in Rats Using Bone Precursor Cells from Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Around 20% of fractures have impaired or no healing. Many procedures have been tried with varying success. The objective of this study is to assess effect of osteoblast transplant (obtained after proliferation and differentiation of MSCs of bone marrow aspirate) in healing of experimentally created non-union of femur in rats. METHODS: Non-Union of femur were created in Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-250 grams. In 20 rats, Femur fracture was surgically created in 20 rats and 2 mm of the periosteum was cauterized on each side of the fracture and this created a non-un

Interproximal wear facets and tooth associations in the Paşalar hominoid sample.

Interproximal wear facets were examined on hominoid teeth from the middle Miocene site at Paşalar, Turkey. The aim was to find matches between adjacent premolar and molar teeth from single individuals that were collected in the field as isolated teeth and use them to reconstruct tooth rows. These were then used to investigate: (1) the wear gradient on the molar teeth; (2) the dispersal of teeth from single mandibles and maxillae; (3) the size ratios among the molars; and (4) the number of individuals represented by the hominoid sample. Facets were scored for size and shape and were assessed vi

Physicochemical changes to surface deposited decomposing bone over different timescales: Investigating the influence of bone fractures and the use of non-destructive analytical techniques.

Considerations on the drivers of bone diagenesis have received a lot of attention, yet there is still more to understand, particularly in relation to chemical changes that can occur post-mortem, and the rate at which these occur. The physicochemical composition of bone is altered during the post-depositional period, leading to a more thermodynamically stable crystal lattice, thus increasing the long-term survivability of the bone. Research has shown the potential for soft tissue trauma to affect the decomposition process, but the effect of bone trauma and fractures on diagenesis has not yet be

Quantification of needle angles for lumbar medial branch denervation targeting the posterior half of the superior articular process: an osteological study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar medial branch radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a common intervention to manage chronic axial low back pain originating from the facet joints. A more parasagittal approach targeting the posterior half of the lateral neck of superior articular process (SAP) was previously proposed. However, specific needle angles to achieve parallel placement at this target site have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To quantify and compare the needle angles, on posterior and lateral views, to achieve parallel placement of electrodes along the medial branch at the posterior half of the latera

Intra-articular celecoxib improves knee extension regardless of surgical release in a rabbit model of arthrofibrosis.

AIMS: Outcomes of current operative treatments for arthrofibrosis after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are not consistently positive or predictable. Pharmacological in vivo studies have focused mostly on prevention of arthrofibrosis. This study used a rabbit model to evaluate intra-articular (IA) effects of celecoxib in treating contracted knees alone, or in combination with capsular release. METHODS: A total of 24 rabbits underwent contracture-forming surgery with knee immobilization followed by remobilization surgery at eight weeks. At remobilization, one cohort underwent capsular release (n

T2 mapping of cartilage in the equine distal interphalangeal joint with corresponding histology using 0.27 T and 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely available to equine veterinarians yet is insensitive at detecting cartilage damage in the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ). T2 mapping is a quantitative imaging technique that can detect cartilage damage before morphological change is apparent. OBJECTIVES: Validation of a T2 mapping sequence on a low-field MR system. Correlation of the mean T2 relaxation time in sections of cartilage with varying levels of pathology using low- and high-field MRI. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Eight phantoms with known (nomin

The risk of major cardiovascular events for adults with transfemoral amputation.

BACKGROUND: It is well-known that the risk of cardiac disease is increased for those with lower-limb amputations, likely as a result of the etiology of the amputation. Using a longitudinal population-based dataset, we examined the association between transfemoral amputation (TFA) status and the risk of experiencing a major cardiac event for those undergoing either dysvascular or traumatic amputations. The association of receiving a prosthesis with the risk of experiencing a major cardiac event was also examined. METHODS: Study Population: All individuals with TFA (N 162), i.e. knee disarticul
