Neural processing of facial expressions of emotion in first onset psychosis.

Schizophrenia is characterized by deficits in face and facial emotion processing. This is the first study using event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the corresponding neural activation in first onset psychosis. ERPs for 108 first onset psychosis participants and 108 matched healthy controls were recorded while they viewed facial expressions. Group differences on general (neutral) face processing and emotional valence were examined under both unmasked (conscious) and backward-masked (nonconscious implicit) conditions over frontal and temporo-occipital regions. Clinical significance wa

Does attention bias modification improve attentional control? A double-blind randomized experiment with individuals with social anxiety disorder.

People with anxiety disorders often exhibit an attentional bias for threat. Attention bias modification (ABM) procedure may reduce this bias, thereby diminishing anxiety symptoms. In ABM, participants respond to probes that reliably follow non-threatening stimuli (e.g., neutral faces) such that their attention is directed away from concurrently presented threatening stimuli (e.g., disgust faces). Early studies showed that ABM reduced anxiety more than control procedures lacking any contingency between valenced stimuli and probes. However, recent work suggests that no-contingency training and t

Upsampling to 400-ms resolution for assessing effective connectivity in functional magnetic resonance imaging data with Granger causality.

Granger causality analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal data allows one to infer the direction and magnitude of influence that brain regions exert on one another. We employed a method for upsampling the time resolution of fMRI data that does not require additional interpolation beyond the interpolation that is regularly used for slice-timing correction. The mathematics for this new method are provided, and simulations demonstrate its viability. Using fMRI, 17 snake phobics and 19 healthy controls viewed snake, disgust, and neutral fish vid

Are there differential deficits in facial emotion recognition between paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia? A signal detection analysis.

This study assessed facial emotion recognition abilities in subjects with paranoid and non-paranoid schizophrenia (NPS) using signal detection theory. We explore the differential deficits in facial emotion recognition in 44 paranoid patients with schizophrenia (PS) and 30 non-paranoid patients with schizophrenia (NPS), compared to 80 healthy controls. We used morphed faces with different intensities of emotion and computed the sensitivity index (d') of each emotion. The results showed that performance differed between the schizophrenia and healthy controls groups in the recognition of both neg

Difficulties experienced by families following unsuccessful treatment of Pediculosis capitis: the mothers' perspective.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine the psychological and social difficulties faced by primary school children and their families, particularly from the mothers' perspective, when treatment for Pediculosis capitis fails. METHODS: This descriptive study comprised 14 mothers of 19 children in the primary school in Kocaeli. The children and families were infested with lice and nits and were unsuccessfully treated with pediculicides. Data were collected by a semi-structured questionnaire with in-depth individual interviews with a qualitative approach from mothers. RESULTS: Seven social diffi

Vasovagal syncope and blood donor return: examination of the role of experience and affective expectancies.

Vasovagal sensations (e.g., dizziness, nausea, and fainting) are one of the main reasons people find blood donation unpleasant. A better understanding of predictors of vasovagal sensations during blood donation could inform interventions designed to increase donor return rates. The present investigation examined the extent to which experience with blood donation and vasovagal sensations during blood donation uniquely predict the likelihood of donor return, even when controlling for affective expectancies. Participants presenting at community blood drives indicated how many times they have give

Impaired recognition of facial emotions from low-spatial frequencies in Asperger syndrome.

The theory of 'weak central coherence' [Happe, F., & Frith, U. (2006). The weak coherence account: Detail-focused cognitive style in autism spectrum disorders. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 36(1), 5-25] implies that persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have a perceptual bias for local but not for global stimulus features. The recognition of emotional facial expressions representing various different levels of detail has not been studied previously in ASDs. We analyzed the recognition of four basic emotional facial expressions (anger, disgust, fear and happiness) from

Symptom provocation and reduction in patients suffering from spider phobia: an fMRI study on exposure therapy.

Neurofunctional mechanisms underlying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are still not clearly understood. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study focused on changes in brain activation as a result of one-session CBT in patients suffering from spider phobia. Twenty-six female spider phobics and 25 non-phobic subjects were presented with spider pictures, generally disgust-inducing, generally fear-inducing and affectively neutral scenes in an initial fMRI session. Afterwards, the patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group (TG) or a waiting list group (WG). The scans

Ticks feeding on humans: a review of records on human-biting Ixodoidea with special reference to pathogen transmission.

In this article, literature records of argasid and ixodid ticks feeding on humans worldwide are provided in view of increased awareness of risks associated with tick bites. Ticks can cause paralyses, toxicoses, allergic reactions and are vectors of a broad range of viral, rickettsial, bacterial and protozoan pathogens. Approximately 12 argasid species (Argas and Ornithodos) are frequently found attached to humans who intrude into tick-infested caves and burrows. Over 20 ixodid tick species are often found on humans exposed to infested vegetation: four of these are Amblyomma species, 7 Dermacen

Facial expressions can detect Parkinson's disease: preliminary evidence from videos collected online.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A prevalent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) is hypomimia - reduced facial expressions. In this paper, we present a method for diagnosing PD that utilizes the study of micro-expressions. We analyzed the facial action units (AU) from 1812 videos of 604 individuals (61 with PD and 543 without PD, with a mean age 63.9 y/o, sd. 7.8) collected online through a web-based tool ( www.parktest.net ). In these videos, participants were asked to make three facial expressions (a smiling, disgusted, and surprised face) followed by a neutral face. Using techniques from computer vision and machine learnin

Strength of lateralisation for processing facial emotion in relation to autistic traits in individuals without autism.

A great number of studies have shown that non-clinical individuals rely predominantly on the right hemisphere to process facial emotion. Previous studies have shown that males suffering from Asperger's syndrome show a typical right hemisphere bias for processing facial emotion (happiness and sadness) but a reduced right hemisphere bias for processing facial identity. This study looks at the lateralisation of all six basic emotions using the chimeric faces test in 64 non-clinical participants (32 males, 32 females) and correlates it with their autistic traits measured using the Broad Autistic P

The Impact of Infectious Disease Severity on Stigma Associated With Affected Regions: A Facial Representation Perspective.

Individuals from regions affected by infectious disease outbreaks may be stigmatized because others hold negative mental images-or mental representations-of them. This study investigated whether such outbreaks lead to the formation of negative mental representations of residents in affected areas and explored the role of disease severity in this process. Study 1 revealed that during the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, the public's mental representations of residents from Wuhan were perceived as less attractive than those of Chengdu residents and associated with disgust and behavioural a

Moral Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in War: The Effect of Marital Status and Previous Genocidal Trauma.

This study examines the intergenerational transfer of the genocidal trauma of the Holodomor (1932-33) and explores how marital status moderates its impact on moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Moral injury, distinct from PTSD, arises from the violation of moral beliefs, leading to emotional distress characterised by guilt, shame, anger, disgust and a sense of betrayal. While previous research predominantly focused on direct survivors of genocide, this study expands the understanding of moral injury to their descendants, part

Students' Conceptions of Animal Emotions and Cognitive Abilities in Karamoja (Uganda): Implications for Animal Welfare Education and One Health.

Pastoralist communities in Karamoja maintain close, multifaceted relationships with animals from early childhood, yet little is known about how children conceptualise animal emotions and cognitive abilities. This pilot study explored these conceptions among Kasimeri Primary School students in Karamoja, Uganda, within the AICS All-In-One Project (AID 012590/04/1). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered to 326 students (mean age 13 ± 2 years). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and generalised linear models (GLMs). Most children attribut

Alterations of Activity in Visual Areas of Left Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Patients: Evidence from Moving Facial Emotional Tasks.

BACKGROUND: Persons with epilepsy suffer from problems with social adaptation and face numerous social issues, even when the seizures are well-controlled. Facial emotion recognition (FER), one of the key components of social cognition, has been shown to be impaired in persons with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). OBJECTIVE: To clarify the impairment of neural networks in persons with MTLE, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of MTLE persons using six dynamic tasks involving FER. METHODS: We evaluated brain responses to realistic dynamic facial emotional exp

Sentiment in speech is associated with symptom severity in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Sentiment in the speech of people with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) may reflect psychosis severity. Previous research examines speech from semi-structured interviews or self-narrative prompts, where differences in measured sentiment may be driven by differences in life experiences. We measured sentiment in speech evoked from standardised stimuli among participants with a psychotic disorder. METHODS: Two cohorts (N = 97) participated in this study. Symptom domains were assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and were represented as Anxious Depression, Hostile Sus

Eating disorders: etiology, risk factors, and suggestions for prevention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The incidence of eating disorders has increased worldwide. This narrative review gives an overview of research on etiology and risk factors of eating disorders published in 2022-2024. RECENT FINDINGS: Eating disorders arise from a complex set of risk factors. The recent increase in incidence of eating disorders can be linked to root causes that include sociocultural pressure to conform to unrealistic and gendered body ideals, rise in obesogenic environments, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies have shown that screen time and social media intensify sociocultural

Impaired Emotion Recognition: A Potential Marker for Social Behavioral Problems in Patients With Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Early Alzheimer Disease?

OBJECTIVE: Emotion recognition, an important aspect of social cognition, can be impaired already in early Alzheimer disease dementia and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and may underly social behavioral changes, which can increase caregiver burden. However, social behavior is difficult to assess in outpatient settings. We evaluated whether impaired emotion recognition is related to proxy-rated social behavioral problems and thus can serve as a marker of these changes. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Emotion recognition was assessed with Ekman 60 Faces Test (EFT-total, 6 separate emotions) in p

Dysfunctional personality beliefs and emotion recognition in individuals with methamphetamine dependence.

Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals with methamphetamine dependence have impaired emotion recognition. However, heterogeneity in results from these studies may indicate that individual factors such as personality beliefs moderate emotion recognition deficits. Thus, we aimed to examine the relationship between dimensional estimates of dysfunctional personality beliefs and facial emotion recognition in 86 Australian treatment seekers with methamphetamine dependence. Dysfunctional beliefs were measured using the Personality Beliefs Questionnaire, and emotion recognition was measur

Explicit and Implicit Responses to Tasting Drinks Associated with Different Tasting Experiences.

Probing food experience or liking through verbal ratings has its shortcomings. We compare explicit ratings to a range of (neuro)physiological and behavioral measures with respect to their performance in distinguishing drinks associated with different emotional experience. Seventy participants tasted and rated the valence and arousal of eight regular drinks and a "ground truth" high-arousal, low-valence vinegar solution. The discriminative power for distinguishing between the vinegar solution and the regular drinks was highest for sip size, followed by valence ratings, arousal ratings, heart ra
