Iliotibial band syndrome: an examination of the evidence behind a number of treatment options.

Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome (ITBS) is a common cause of distal lateral thigh pain in athletes. Treatment often focuses on stretching the ITB and treating local inflammation at the lateral femoral condyle (LFC). We examine the area's anatomical and biomechanical properties. Anatomical studies of the ITB of 20 embalmed cadavers. The strain generated in the ITB by three typical stretching maneuvers (Ober test; Hip flexion, adduction and external rotation, with added knee flexion and straight leg raise to 30 degrees ) was measured in five unembalmed cadavers using strain gauges. Displacement of

Real-time visualization of ultrasound-guided retrobulbar blockade: an imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Retrobulbar anaesthesia allows eye surgery in awake patients. Severe complications of the blind techniques are reported. Ultrasound-guided needle introduction and direct visualization of the spread of local anaesthetic may improve quality and safety of retrobulbar anaesthesia. Therefore, we developed a new ultrasound-guided technique using human cadavers. METHODS: In total, 20 blocks on both sides in 10 embalmed human cadavers were performed. Using a small curved array transducer and a long-axis approach, a 22 G short bevel needle was introduced under ultrasound guidance lateral a

Maxillary artery: anatomical landmarks and relationship with the mandibular subcondyle.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary artery can be injured during procedures in the subcondylar portion of the mandible. Thorough knowledge of this region is mandatory to avoid accidental puncture of the maxillary artery, which can lead to profuse bleeding that is hard to control. METHODS: In 16 halves of eight embalmed cadaver heads, the maxillary artery was dissected from the branching point to the entrance point to the maxillary sinus. Its anatomical relationships with certain landmarks were recorded numerically. RESULTS: The mean distance of the branching point of the maxillary artery to the tragal

Middle cranial fossa endoscopy using a rigid endoscope.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also known as tic douloureaux, is a craniofacial pain disorder which is typically associated with acute-onset severe pain on one side of the face usually. The condition is characterized by intermittent unilateral pain affecting the lower face and jaw. Although many potential causes have been implicated, in many patients the etiology remains obscure. Initially, patients with trigeminal neuralgia should be offered conservative medical management. If surgery is necessary, the simplest and least hazardous procedure should be chosen. The goals of modern surgical therapy a

Anatomic study of the synovial folds of the occipito-atlanto-axial joints.

This study was performed to observe and measure synovial folds of the occipito-atlanto-axial joints and to explore their clinical significance. Two hundred ninety eight occipito-atlanto-axial joints from 30 embalmed cadavers of children and 20 of adults were dissected to find the incidence, quantity, distribution, forms, dimension, and histology of synovial folds. Synovial folds were found in most joints in both groups except for the posterior median atlantoaxial joints. Most of synovial folds were crescent-shaped, distributed on the superior aspects of the anterior median atlantoaxial joints,

The incidence of lumbar ligamentum flavum midline gaps.

UNLABELLED: Lumbar epidural anesthesia and analgesia has gained increasing importance in perioperative pain therapy for abdominal and lower limb surgery. The loss-of-resistance technique, used to identify the epidural space, is thought to rely on the penetration of the ligamentum flavum. However, the exact morphology of the ligamentum flavum at different vertebral levels remains controversial. Therefore, in this study, we directly investigated the incidence of lumbar ligamentum flavum midline gaps in embalmed cadavers. Vertebral column specimens were obtained from 45 human cadavers. On each di

Cervical and high thoracic ligamentum flavum frequently fails to fuse in the midline.

BACKGROUND: Cervical and high thoracic epidural anesthesia and analgesia have gained increasing importance in the treatment of painful conditions and as components of anesthetics for cardiac and breast surgery. In contrast to the hanging-drop technique, the loss-of-resistance technique is thought to rely on the penetration of the ligamentum flavum. However, the exact morphology of the ligamentum flavum at different vertebral levels remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and morphology of cervical and high thoracic ligamentum flavum mid-line gap

Anatomic variability of the ilioinguinal and genitofemoral nerve: implications for the treatment of groin pain.

The differential diagnosis of groin pain must consider problems of the ilioinguinal and/or genitofemoral nerve. These nerves may become injured during hernia surgery or lower quadrant surgical procedures. To treat injury to these nerves, it is critical to understand their anatomic variability. In the present study the pattern of cutaneous nerve branches in the inguinal region was investigated through dissection in 64 halves of 32 human embalmed anatomic specimens. In contrast to usual textual descriptions, four different types of cutaneous branching patterns are identified: type A, with a domi

Mobility of the first tarsometatarsal joint in relation to hallux valgus deformity: anatomical and biomechanical aspects.

Hypermobility of the first tarsometatarsal (TMT 1) joint is suggested to be an important factor in the cause and progression of hallux valgus deformity. Hypermobility of the TMT 1 joint is tested clinically in the sagittal plane, but an important deformation also exists in the transversal plane: metatarsus primus varus. This in vitro study was undertaken to investigate the relation between the mobility of the TMT 1 joint in these two planes and to investigate the correlation of the mobility with morphological variables. A second aim was to study the possible stabilizing effect of the tibialis

Arterial variation relevant to transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR): a cadaveric and literature based analysis.

PURPOSE: Transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) is the preferred vascular access route for aortic valve implantation, but procedural success is highly dependable on iliofemoral vascular anatomy. This study aimed to directly assess anatomic risk factors for TF-TAVR using cadaveric dissection and highlight their relevance in the context of imaging-based literature. METHODS: Thirty-two formalin-embalmed cadavers (64 limbs) were dissected to assess luminal diameters of the common femoral (CFA), external iliac (EIA), and common iliac arteries (CIA). Anatomical configurations

Morphometric Variations of Extraocular Muscles in a Caucasian Cohort: A Pilot Study on the Surgical Implications of Ethnic Diversity.

Precise anatomical knowledge of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) is crucial, particularly for managing "slipped" or "lost" muscles in strabismus surgery. This pilot study provides the first morphometric data for Caucasian-specific, cadaveric orbits, revealing significant deviations from accepted anatomical norms. 6 Caucasian, formalin-embalmed orbits (86-92 years) were dissected using a superior orbitotomy approach at the Human Anatomy Unit, University of Birmingham. Recti and oblique lengths, insertion widths, limbal distances, and inter-recti distances were measured using a triple-observer, st

Learning curve estimation and insertion depth in Veress needle insertion using a conventional Veress needle and the VeressPlus™ needle.

BACKGROUND: The Veress Needle (VN) is commonly used in establishing pneumoperitoneum in laparoscopic surgery. However, severe vascular and/or visceral complications can occur due to overshoot at the insertion of the VN in the abdominal cavity. In order to investigate whether the new VeressPLUS needle (VN+) could improve safety, the learning curve of this needle was compared to that of a conventional VN, under standardized conditions. METHODS: In total, 26 residents and med students, without prior Veress needle experience, were recruited and randomly assigned to VN or the VN+ group. A learning

A randomized controlled trial comparing static ultrasound guided lumbar puncture to the dynamic paramedian approach.

INTRODUCTION: The dynamic paramedian (DP) approach to lumbar puncture (LP) is a novel technique that allows for active ultrasound (US) guidance. We sought to investigate the efficacy of this approach as compared to traditional static US guidance using a cadaver model. METHODS: This was a prospective study between November 2024 and May 2025 at a single institution. Four ultrasound-trained emergency physicians performed simulated LPs on soft-embalmed cadavers using both the static midline (SMLP) and dynamic paramedian (DPLP) ultrasound approaches. For each spinal level, the order in which the t

Forearm Extensor Tendon Fractional Lengthening: An Anatomic Feasibility Study.

PURPOSE: Fractional tendon lengthening (FL) of the forearm flexors involves multiple tenotomies at the musculotendinous junction. However, the feasibility of this technique with respect to forearm extensor muscles has not been well-studied. This study sought to evaluate the anatomy of forearm extensors, analyze the extent of muscle-tendon overlap, and identify the safest area to perform FL. METHODS: Nine soft-embalmed adult cadaver forearms from the midhumerus to the wrist were dissected through a dorsal longitudinal incision. For each muscle, we defined and measured the total overlapping zon

Ultrasound validation of surface localization for the recurrent motor branch of the median nerve: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid identification of the recurrent motor branch (RMB) of the median nerve (MN) via ultrasound is relatively challenging, and its timely accurate localisation facilitates early assessment. This study established a surface landmark-based coordinate system for RMB localisation and verified its effectiveness through cadaver dissection and high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty embalmed wrist specimens were dissected to record RMB anatomical variations. A coordinate system was constructed with the distal wrist crease as the X-axis and the radial border of th
