BACKGROUND: Psychological health risk is one of the most severe and complex risks in manned deep-space exploration and long-term closed environments. Recently, with the in-depth research of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, gut microbiota has been considered a new approach to maintain and improve psychological health. However, the correlation between gut microbiota and psychological changes inside long-term closed environments is still poorly understood. Herein, we used the "Lunar Palace 365" mission, a 1-year-long isolation study in the Lunar Palace 1 (a closed manned Bioregenerative Life Suppor

Gut microbiota have been associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and colorectal cancer (CRC), but their causal relationships in humans remain unclear. We performed Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate causal relationships among gut microbiota, CRP, and CRC using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary data. The inverse variance weighted method was prespecified as the primary estimator, with complementary MR methods and sensitivity analyses used to assess robustness. Multiple-testing correction was applied across 209 gut microbial taxa. External validation and tar

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common comorbidity in epilepsy, but its underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Although the "oral-brain axis" has gained increasing attention in neuropsychiatric disorders, oral microbial characteristics in epileptic patients with depressive symptoms remain largely unexplored. This study aimed to compare the oral microbial composition between epileptic patients with and without depressive symptoms and to identify bacterial genera and functional pathways that may be associated with depressive symptoms.
METHODS: The study included 59 adult patients with epileps

INTRODUCTION: Fresh rumen fluid is a promising donor material for rumen fluid transplantation (RFT), but poor storage stability and batch variability limit its use.
METHODS: In this study, lyophilized rumen fluid samples from goats fed alfalfa hay or corn stover diets were designated AHP and CSP, respectively. For the in vitro fermentation assay, portions of lyophilized rumen fluid from each batch within each dietary group were pooled and reconstituted; the substrate-supplemented groups were designated AH and CS, whereas AH-CON and CS-CON served as the corresponding substrate-free controls.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive metabolic disorder impacting women of reproductive age, with its etiology influenced numerous factors. Recent research indicates that the gut microbiota, along with its metabolites and associated immune-inflammatory responses, may contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS. However, there is finite understanding of the potential intermediate impacts of circulating metabolites, immune cells, and inflammatory proteins on the linkage between intestinal flora and PCOS. This study seeks to explore the interrelationships among the gut

Background Peri-implant diseases are primarily driven by microbial biofilm accumulation on the implant surface, leading to inflammatory destruction of the soft and hard tissues supporting dental implants, with progressive marginal bone loss and potential implant failure. Objectives: To analyze the subgingival microbial profiles of peri-implant sites and adjacent teeth in peri-implantitis and to assess the modifying effects of smoking and periodontal status. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 43 adults (mean age: 54.5 years) contributed 100 dental implants and 50 adjacent natural teeth. Im

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to support our hypothesis regarding compositional changes in the intestinal microbiota by characterizing these changes through pre- and post-transplantation analyses. Additionally, it seeks to determine whether monitoring the intestinal flora could provide predictive or therapeutic insights into graft versus host disease.
METHODS: This study included adult patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Microbiota assessments were performed through stool analyses. Stool samples were collected twice: once before transplantation and once

UNLABELLED: Many studies have reported gut microbiome alterations in psoriasis patients, suggesting dysbiosis. While evidence for dysbiosis and its link to pathogenesis remains inconclusive, murine models of psoriasis suggest that gut microbiome alterations develop in response to psoriasis-like inflammation. Hence, the dominant narrative about gut microbiome alterations' impact on disease should be evaluated critically with more data and a well-powered approach. In this case-control study, we used deep sequencing of fecal samples from 53 psoriasis patients and 47 healthy donors to reconstruct

BACKGROUND: Areca nut polyphenols (AP) that extracted from areca nut, have been demonstrated for their potential of anti-fatigue effects. However, the underlying mechanisms for the anti-fatigue properties of AP has not been fully elucidated to date. Previous studies have predominantly concentrated on single aspects, such as antioxidation and anti-inflammation, yet have lacked comprehensive multi-dimensional analyses.
PURPOSE: To explore the underlying mechanism of AP in exerting anti-fatigue effects.
METHODS: In this study, we developed a chronic sleep deprivation-induced fatigue model and u

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the most severe form of all leishmanial infections and is caused by infection with protozoa of Leishmania donovani and Leishmania infantum. This parasitic disease occurs in over 80 countries and its geographic distribution is on the rise. Although the interaction between the intestinal microbiome and the immune response has been established in several pathologies, it has not been widely studied in leishmaniasis. The Syrian hamster is the most advanced laboratory model for developing vaccines and new drugs against VL. In the study reported here, we exp

The high-grain diets fed to ruminants generally alters the structure and function of rumen microbiota, resulting in variations of rumen fermentation patterns and the occurrence of subacute rumen acidosis (SARA). To clarify the microbial mechanism for carbohydrate metabolism during SARA, 8 ruminally cannulated Holstein cows in mid lactation were selected for a 3-wk experiment. The cows were randomly divided into 2 groups, fed either a conventional diet (CON; 40% concentrate; dry matter basis) or a high-grain diet (HG; 60% concentrate; dry matter basis). Compared with the CON diet, the HG diet r

Five patients with blind loop syndrome (Billroth II) were examined by measuring 14CO2 specific activity of expired breath samples taken at intervals after a meal containing glycine-1-14C cholate. The 5 patients tested showed a marked increase of 14CO2 specific activity. Furthermore, the ability of deconjugation of bacteria isolated from the jejunal fluids in the efferent loop of these patients was tested by thin layer chromatography. The bacterial species identified from the samples were as follows: enterococcus, Lactobacillus (L) buchneri, L. bifidus, L. brevis, Eubacterium (E) lentum, Bacter
