Evolving Gaussian Process Autoregression Based Learning of Human Motion Intent Using Improved Energy Kernel Method of EMG.

Continuous human motion intent learning may be modeled using a Gaussian process (GP) autoregression based evolving system to cope with the unspecified and time-varying motion patterns. Electromyography (EMG) signals are the primary input. GP is used as a mathematical foundation to model human kinematics by adopting the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) framework, and an evolving system is applied to learn the irregular and unspecified dynamic features. The statistical nature of the GP offers superior flexibility for learning human kinematics and is capable of giving credibi

Overground walking with a robotic exoskeleton elicits trunk muscle activity in people with high-thoracic motor-complete spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: The trunk muscles are critical for postural control. Recent neurophysiological studies have revealed sparing of trunk muscle function in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) classified with thoracic or cervical motor-complete injuries. These findings raise the possibility for recruiting and retraining this spared trunk function through rehabilitation. Robotic gait training devices may provide a means to promote trunk muscle activation. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize and compare the activation of the trunk muscles during walking with two robotic gait trai

Locomotor training using an overground robotic exoskeleton in long-term manual wheelchair users with a chronic spinal cord injury living in the community: Lessons learned from a feasibility study in terms of recruitment, attendance, learnability, performance and safety.

BACKGROUND: For individuals who sustain a complete motor spinal cord injury (SCI) and rely on a wheelchair as their primary mode of locomotion, overground robotic exoskeletons represent a promising solution to stand and walk again. Although overground robotic exoskeletons have gained tremendous attention over the past decade and are now being transferred from laboratories to clinical settings, their effects remain unclear given the paucity of scientific evidence and the absence of large-scale clinical trials. This study aims to examine the feasibility of a locomotor training program with an ov

Osseointegrated prostheses for rehabilitation following amputation : The pioneering Swedish model.

The direct attachment of osseointegrated (OI) prostheses to the skeleton avoids the inherent problems of socket suspension. It also provides physiological weight bearing, improved range of motion in the proximal joint, as well as osseoperceptive sensory feedback, enabling better control of the artificial limbs by amputees. The present article briefly reviews the pioneering efforts on extremity osseointegration surgeries in Sweden and the development of the OPRA (Osseointegrated Prostheses for the Rehabilitation of Amputees) program. The standard implant design of the OPRA system and surgical t

Development and evaluation of a soft pneumatic muscle for elbow joint rehabilitation.

Elbow joint rehabilitation presents a formidable challenge, underscored by the joint's complex biomechanics and high vulnerability to injuries and degenerative conditions. Despite the advancements in rehabilitative technology, current solutions such as rigid exoskeletons often fall short in providing the precision, flexibility, and customization needed for effective treatment. Although traditional robotic aids, such as rigid exoskeletons, help recover, they lack in providing sufficient flexibility, comfort, and easy customization with no need for complicated calculation and complex design cons

Personalization of Wearable Sensor-Based Joint Kinematics Estimation Using Computer Vision for Hip Exoskeleton Applications.

Accurate lower-limb joint kinematics estimation is critical for patient monitoring, rehabilitation, and exoskeleton control. While previous studies have employed wearable sensor-based deep learning (DL) models for estimating joint kinematics, these methods often require extensive new datasets to adapt to unseen gait patterns. Meanwhile, researchers in computer vision have advanced human pose estimation models, which are easy to deploy and capable of real-time inference. However, such models are infeasible in scenarios where cameras cannot be used. To address these limitations, we propose a com

Determining User Intent of Partly Dynamic Shoulder Tasks in Individuals With Chronic Stroke Using Pattern Recognition.

Stroke remains the leading cause of long-term disability in the US. Although therapy can achieve limited improvement of paretic arm use and performance, weakness and abnormal muscle synergies-which cause unintentional elbow, wrist, and finger flexion during shoulder abduction-contribute significantly to limb disuse and compound rehabilitation efforts. Emerging wearable exoskeleton technology could provide powered abduction support for the paretic arm, but requires a clinically feasible, robust control scheme capable of differentiating multiple shoulder degrees-of-freedom. This study examines w

Brain-machine interface based on transfer-learning for detecting the appearance of obstacles during exoskeleton-assisted walking.

INTRODUCTION: Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) attempt to establish communication between the user and the device to be controlled. BMIs have great challenges to face in order to design a robust control in the real field of application. The artifacts, high volume of training data, and non-stationarity of the signal of EEG-based interfaces are challenges that classical processing techniques do not solve, showing certain shortcomings in the real-time domain. Recent advances in deep-learning techniques open a window of opportunity to solve some of these problems. In this work, an interface able to

Algorithms to support the choice of a wrist-hand orthosis for motor function recovery in post-stroke patients: a narrative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb paresis and spasticity are predictors of limitations on activities of daily living and decrease in quality of life in post-stroke patients. The French National Authority for Health doesn't recommend the orthosis use; nevertheless, they are commonly used in clinical practice despite the lack of consensus. OBJECTIVES: To develop algorithms guiding specialists in choosing an orthosis as an adjunct therapy for motor function recovery in post-stroke patients, depending on their recovery stage, paresis impairment and level of spasticity. METHODS: This is a scoping review, by

Chitin-induced T6SS in Vibrio cholerae is dependent on ChiS activation.

Vibrio cholerae regularly colonizes the chitinous exoskeleton of crustacean shells in the aquatic region. The type 6 secretion system (T6SS) in V. cholerae is an interbacterial killing device. This system is thought to provide a competitive advantage to V. cholerae in a polymicrobial community of the aquatic region under nutrient-poor conditions. V. cholerae chitin sensing is known to be initiated by the activation of a two-component sensor histidine kinase ChiS in the presence of GlcNAc2 (N,N'-diacetylchitobiose) residues generated by the action of chitinases on chitin. It is known that T6SS

Partial Arm Weight Support Does Not Hamper the Weight Perception of Haptically-Rendered Virtual Objects: A Psychophysics Study.

Arm weight support (AWS) from upper-limb exoskeletons aids training by reducing fatigue and increasing the movement workspace, especially in people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Simultaneously, task-specific training could be enabled via haptic rendering, simulating the interaction forces with tangible virtual objects. However, how AWS affects somatosensory perception, such as the perception of the weight of haptically rendered virtual objects, is unclear. We therefore conducted a psychophysics experiment with 40 participants investigating the effect of partial AWS on virtual object weight

Differences in Cardiovascular Intensity Between Gait Training Approaches After Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to severe mobility impairments, necessitating intense rehabilitation to promote recovery and optimize outcomes. Overground robotic exoskeletons (ORE) are emerging gait training tools, but their capacity to elicit moderate-to-vigorous intensity (MVI) in subacute SCI is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To compare the intensity of usual care (UC) and ORE gait training in patients with subacute, motor incomplete SCI and examine the relationship between training intensity and walking function. METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted a

Open-Environment Evidential Learning for Reliable Myoelectric Locomotion Prediction.

Accurate locomotion prediction in dynamic environments is crucial for lower-limb exoskeletons to provide walking assistance. Surface electromyography (sEMG)-based deep learning models demonstrate great potential for decoding user intent, yet most existing approaches are developed under restrictive closed-world assumptions. These limitations hinder adaptability to ambiguous or unexpected locomotion modes in real-world deployment, increasing the risk of unsafe control decisions. To address this gap, we propose the Open-Environment Evidential Learning (OEEL) framework, which integrates evidential
