INTRODUCTION: A pathological fracture appears after a low-energy trauma or minor trauma on bones with a modified histological structure; sometimes, the patient reports shoulder pain antedating the fracture. The most common benign bone tumors that cause pathological fractures in children are simple bone cysts, aneurysmal bone cysts, non-ossifying fibromas and fibrous dysplasia. This type of bone tumors is usually asymptomatic until they reach a large size and cause a pathological fracture after minor trauma. The optimal treatment remains controversial. Our objective was to describe our modern t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A variety of aggressive benign bone tumors often require wide bone and soft tissue excision for adequate local control, but this creates a large defect and a seriously weakened extremity. Restoration of limb function presents a difficult problem.
METHODS: The treatment of 104 patients with space occupying lesions of the long bone were analyzed. Deep-frozen (-70 degrees C) cortical strut allografts with or without allogeneic cancellous bone graft were implanted into the defects after extensive intralesional curettage. Thirty-six patients had fibrous dysplasias, 29 un

The radicular cyst is an inflammatory odontogenic cyst of endodontic origin. Radiographically, the lesion appears as a periapical radiolucent image. This report describes a very rare case of a mixed periapical radiographic image diagnosed as a radicular cyst. A 37-year-old female patient presented a mixed, well-circumscribed image located in the periapical region of the left maxillary central incisor, which presented unsatisfactory endodontic treatment. Microscopic examination revealed a cavity lined by non-keratinized squamous epithelium and extensive calcifications in the cystic lumen and li

Terminal osseous dysplasia with pigmentary defects (TODPD) is a rare, X-linked syndrome classically characterized by distal limb anomalies, pigmented skin defects of the face, and recurrent digital fibromas. X-inactivation plays a major role in determining the range of phenotypic expression. Thus, patients can demonstrate a wide spectrum of disease severity, making accurate diagnosis more challenging. Recent studies have identified a FLNA c.5217G>A mutation as the cause of TODPD, allowing for diagnostic genetic testing. We present a case of molecularly confirmed TODPD in a girl with the 47,XXX

BACKGROUND: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) most commonly present centrally and have only rarely been reported in peripheral locations. The purpose of this report is to describe a new case of peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst (PCOC) occurring in the anterior maxillary gingiva and to review the management and differential diagnosis of such a lesion.
METHODS: A 37-year-old female presented with a long-standing submucosal nodule on the gingiva between the maxillary central incisors, with asymptomatic growth over the last three years. Following an initial incisional biopsy, a dia

INTRODUCTION: Limited data exist on the genetic profile of Familial primary hyperparathyroidism (FPHPT) in the Indian population. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of targeted gene mutations in high-risk patients with PHPT.
METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Endocrinology at our University Hospital from February 2021 to February 2023, in which 103 patients diagnosed with PHPT were taken. A customised gene panel (MEN1, RET, CDKNIB, and CDC73) using next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in 39 patients with a strong susp

Intraosseous hibernoma (IOH) mimicking osseous metastasis is a rare and little-known pitfall in nuclear medicine and radiology. Referring to a clinical case, we show imaging features in FDG-PET and CT as well as pathological characteristics and discuss MRI and differential diagnoses. A 73-year-old woman was assigned for an FDG-PET/CT examination after the incidental finding of a suspicious pulmonary nodule. The FDG-PET/CT examination detected a small slightly FDG-avid pulmonary nodule suspicious for malignancy and a small slightly sclerotic lesion with mild FDG-uptake in the upper pubic bone.

CONTEXT: Skull base tumors are varied in children and are particularly challenging to pediatric neurosurgeons, with few papers in the literature describing the evolution, complications, and outcome. The authors evaluated long-term outcomes in children submitted to skull base tumor surgery and performed a literature review.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyze surgical results, complications, and outcomes, on comparison with previous publications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of children undergoing surgery at a single institution between 2000 and 2018 for lesions of t

BACKGROUND: Due to the variety of clinical presentation, some tumors may be concealed and easily misdiagnosed, leading to delays in management. We report a series of patients who initially presented to an Ophthalmic Clinic with ocular symptoms and were subsequently diagnosed with extraocular tumors.
METHODS: Patients who presented to the ophthalmic outpatient clinic at the Joint Shantou International Eye Center with ocular symptoms between April 2013 and December 2019 and were subsequently diagnosed with intracranial or systemic tumors were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical data, including o

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and causes of pathological fractures in paediatric bone tumours and tumour-like lesions, and to determine if they are predictive of benign lesions.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Retrospective review of children with suspected bone tumours referred to a specialist musculoskeletal oncology service between September 2019 and August 2020. Data recorded included patient age and gender, lesion location, the presence of a pathological fracture on the initial plain radiograph, and the final diagnosis made either by image-guided biopsy/curettage or based on typical imagi

OBJECTIVES: Denosumab is Receptor Activator of Nuclear factor Kappa-B Ligand (RANKL) inhibitor which is being used in the treatment of locally advanced, recurrent and metastatic Giant Cell Tumor of Bone (GCTB). It causes reduction in monocyte recruitment and Osteoclast-Like Giant Cell (OLGC) formation which limits bone destruction. After Denosumab treatment, GCTB exhibit diverse morphological features which can pose diagnostic challenge. Our aim was to study the spectrum of histologic features seen in Denosumab treated GCTB which could be helpful in establishing correct diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The CDC73 gene, encoding parafibromin, has been identified as a tumour suppressor gene both in hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour (HPT-JT) syndrome and in sporadic parathyroid carcinoma. While the vast majority of CDC73 mutations affect the N-terminus or the central core of the encoded protein, as yet few mutations have been reported affecting the C-terminus. Here, we report a case (Caucasian female, 28 years) with an invasive ossifying fibroma of the left mandible and hyperparathyroidism (sCa = 16 mg/dl, PTH = 660 pg/mL) due to a parathyroid lesion of 20 mm, hystologically diagnosed as c

INTRODUCTION: Low-grade central osteosarcoma (LGCO) is a rare subtype of osteosarcoma, accounting for approximately 1-2% of cases. It typically exhibits indolent behavior but poses a diagnostic challenge due to its close radiologic and histologic resemblance to benign fibro-osseous lesions. Although LGCO generally has a favorable prognosis, it may undergo high-grade transformation, leading to more aggressive clinical behavior.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 36-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with recurrent right ankle pain following a remote history of trauma. Im

BACKGROUND: Since there are many differential diagnoses for cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD), it is very difficult for dentists to avoid misdiagnosis. In particular, if COD is related to an embedded tooth, differential diagnosis is difficult. However, there have been no reports on the characteristics of the imaging findings of COD associated with embedded teeth. The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and imaging characteristics of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) associated with embedded teeth, in order to appropriately diagnose COD with embedded teeth.
METHODS: The radi

Sporadic giant cell granulomas (GCGs) of the jaws and cherubism-associated giant cell lesions share histopathological features and microscopic diagnosis alone can be challenging. Additionally, GCG can morphologically closely resemble other giant cell-rich lesions, including non-ossifying fibroma (NOF), aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB), and chondroblastoma. The epigenetic basis of these giant cell-rich tumours is unclear and DNA methylation profiling has been shown to be clinically useful for the diagnosis of other tumour types. Therefore, we aimed to assess the DNA

OBJECTIVES: Fibro-osseous lesions of the paranasal sinuses can present various clinical manifestations. This study aimed to report the long-term clinical course of benign fibro-osseous lesions (BFOLs) in the paranasal sinuses, including clinical and radiologic features.
METHODS: Radiologically confirmed BFOLs between 1994 and 2016, with the exclusion of osteoma cases, were retrospectively reviewed. We compared demographic characteristics between the surgery and observation groups. The reasons for the imaging study, radiographic features, histopathology, and clinical course based on serial ima

AIM: To assess the results of surgical treatment in aneurysmal bone cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 31 patients with aneurysmal bone cysts underwent surgical treatment in our department. In almost half of cases, the lesion was located in the femur. In 12 cases, a pathological bone fracture was the first clinical sign. The treatment consisted in curettage, abrasion of the cavity inner walls using a motorized burr and filling with morsellized bone grafts (autografts ± allografts) or bone substitutes (four cases). Microscopically, the diagnosis relies on cystic spaces filled with blood, divided by

We report the spontaneous occurrence of oral neoplasms in pickhandle barracuda Sphyraena jello Cuvier, 1829 from Parangipettai, on the southeast coast of India. A total of 11736 fish were examined, of which 43 were affected with oral tumours, with an overall prevalence of 0.37%. Gross and clinical symptoms included reddish to grayish-white distended tumourous growths on the gingiva, intra-oral bones and tongue. The tumours exhibited delayed eruption and intra- or extra-oral swelling, varied in consistency from extremely firm to fleshy and released mucinous material. The majority of tumours con
