A retrospective analysis of the sentence writing component of the Mini Mental State Examination: cognitive and affective aspects.

BACKGROUND: One of the components of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is the request to write a sentence. We investigated the relationship between the characteristics of the written sentence of the MMSE and the cognitive and affective status of elderly patients. METHODS: The characteristics of the sentence were compared to the total MMSE score, sociodemographic characteristics, tests evaluating cognition and affective status, and diagnoses. RESULTS: The number of words was significantly associated with the degree of cognitive impairment, whereas the emotional polarity of sentences an

Improving the Quality of Dental Laboratory Prescription Forms Through Training and Digital Workflow.

INTRODUCTION: Communication between dentists and dental technicians traditionally depends on handwritten lab prescription forms. This method often results in issues like illegible handwriting, missing data, or lost forms, particularly among dental students. A digital platform was developed to address these challenges and streamline the transfer of patient information and preserve lab records. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of structured training on prosthodontic lab form completion and to assess the effectiveness of a newly developed digital lab form in enhancing communication and wor

Similarities and differences in psycho-educational assessments of adolescents with specific language impairments and specific learning disabilities: A challenging differential diagnosis.

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have been the subject of extensive research especially with respect to the connection between them. However, the manifestation of these disorders in adolescence has not been thoroughly investigated. The objective of the present study was to compare the intelligence scores and the reading, oral and written language skills of Greek adolescents with SLI and Greek adolescents with SLD, as assessed during their psycho-educational evaluation, in order to clear the path for diagnosis and intervention. 124 Greek adolescents di

Progressive crossed-apraxia of speech as a first manifestation of a probable corticobasal degeneration.

We present the longitudinal neurolinguistic, neuropsychological and neurologic follow-up of a 64 y.o. right-handed woman, who developed progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS), followed by peripheral agraphia then a left corticobasal syndrome (CBS). Neuroimaging (CT, MRI and FDG-PET) unequivocally showed progressive right hemispheric atrophy and hypometabolism. This particular evolution first confirms that PAOS is a phenotype of probable corticobasal degeneration (CBD). More importantly, this case underpins the neural organisation of motor planning processing in relation with speech, as well as g

The efficacy of relaxation training with children.

This paper reviews studies that have examined the efficacy of relaxation training techniques in the treatment of childhood disorders. Methodological problems encountered in doing research in this area resemble those found in working with an adult population: imprecise definitions of subject populations and use of a variety of dependent variables from one study to another. Findings suggest that relaxation training is at least as effective as other treatment approaches for a variety of learning, behavioral, and physiological disorders when it is continued over an extended period of time and is a

Manganese-induced Parkinsonism in a patient undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.

We report a rare case of manganese (Mn)-induced parkinsonism in a patient on maintenance hemodialysis therapy who complained of gait disturbance and dysarthria. His symptoms and abnormal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the brain were thought to be caused, at least in part, by long-term ingestion of a health supplement (Chlorella extract) that contained 1.7 mg of Mn in the usual daily dose. Elevated serum and cerebrospinal fluid Mn levels were detected, and brain MRI showed areas of abnormal intensity in the bilateral basal ganglia (low intensity on T1-weighted images and high inte

Crossed aphasia following an infarction in the right corpus callosum.

A 68-year-old right-handed woman with no history of brain damage or familial left-handedness was admitted to our hospital due to the acute onset of speech difficulty; her speech was nonfluent. Literal and phonological paraphasias, agrammatism and paragrammatism were observed. Brain MRI revealed an acute infarction in the right anterior cerebral artery territory, involving the right corpus callosum. Moreover, cerebral blood flow was decreased not only in the area of the right corpus callosum but also in the left fronto-temporal lobe, suggesting crossed diaschisis. This is a rare case of crossed

Haplotype analysis at the DYT1 locus in Ashkenazi Jewish patients with occupational hand dystonia.

Genetic haplotypes at five marker loci that are closely linked to the DYT1 gene on chromosome 9q were determined in 10 Ashkenazi Jewish patients with focal hand dystonia (eight with musician's cramp, two with writer's cramp). The founder haplotype associated with > 90% of cases generalized dystonia in the Ashkenazi Jewish population could not be constructed from any of the twenty chromosomes. Potential haplotypes were determined, and no common haplotype was discerned in these patients. These findings argue against a role for the founder mutation in the DYT1 gene in the etiology of occupational

The neural basis for writing from dictation in the temporoparietal cortex.

Cortical electrical stimulation mapping was used to study neural substrates of the function of writing in the temporoparietal cortex. We identified the sites involved in oral language (sentence reading and naming) and writing from dictation, in order to spare these areas during removal of brain tumours in 30 patients (23 in the left, and 7 in the right hemisphere). Electrostimulation of the cortex impaired writing ability in 62 restricted cortical areas (.25 cm2). These were found in left temporoparietal lobes and were mostly located along the superior temporal gyrus (Brodmann's areas 22 and 4

Gamma Knife thalamotomy for treatment of essential tremor: long-term results.

OBJECT: The goal of this report was to describe the safety and effectiveness of nucleus ventralis intermedius (VIM) thalamotomy performed with the Leksell Gamma Knife (GK) for the treatment of essential tremor (ET). METHODS: One hundred seventy-two patients underwent a total of 214 VIM thalamotomy procedures with the Leksell GK between February 1994 and March 2007 for treatment of disabling ET. Eleven patients were lost to follow-up less than 1 year after the procedures, so that in this report the authors describe the results in 161 patients who underwent a total of 203 thalamotomies (119 uni

Measurement of ataxic symptoms with a graphic tablet: standard values in controls and validity in Multiple Sclerosis patients.

Aim of our study was to find a specific measure for the intensity of upper limb tremor and other ataxic symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, and to establish standard values and test quality parameters. Three hundred and forty-two consecutive patients with different symptoms in the upper limbs (upper motor neuron symptoms, cerebellar upper limb ataxia, and/or sensory deficits in the upper limbs) and 140 healthy controls took part in the study. All patients and controls had to trace over a 25 cm high figure '8' on a graphic tablet, to tap with the stylus on the tablet and to perform th

Learning, attention, writing, and processing speed in typical children and children with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and oppositional-defiant disorder.

Learning, attention, graphomotor, and processing speed scores were analyzed in 149 typical control children and 886 clinical children with normal intelligence. Nonsignificant differences were found between control children and children with anxiety, depression, and oppositional-defiant disorder. Control children performed better than children with ADHD and autism in all areas. Children with ADHD and autism did not differ, except that children with ADHD had greater learning problems. Attention, graphomotor, and speed weaknesses were likely to coexist, the majority of children with autism and AD

Hand preference for writing and associations with selected demographic and behavioral variables in 255,100 subjects: the BBC internet study.

In an Internet study unrelated to handedness, 134,317 female and 120,783 male participants answered a graded question as to which hand they preferred for writing. This allowed determination of hand preference patterns across 7 ethnic groups. Sex differences in left-handedness were found in 4 ethnic groups, favoring males, while no significant sex differences were found in three of the groups. Prevalence of left-handedness in the largest of the ethnic groups (self-labelled as "White") was comparable to contemporary hand preference data for this group [Gilbert, A. N., & Wysocki, C. J. (1992). Ha
