Salivary secretions play critical roles in interactions among insects, insect-vectored pathogens, and host plants. The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri is a sap-sucking Hemipteran that serves as a vector for Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the causal agent of citrus greening disease ("Huanglongbing" or HLB). D. citri continuously injects saliva into host plants using specialized stylets so as to feed and transmit the HLB pathogen. Knowledge on the composition and function of salivary proteins of this pest is very limited. In this study, proteomic and transcriptomic approaches were adop

Viral pathogens are a major threat to stable crop production. Using a backcross strategy, we find that integrating a dominant brown planthopper (BPH) resistance gene Bph3 into a high-yield and BPH-susceptible indica rice variety significantly enhances BPH resistance. However, when Bph3-carrying backcross lines are infested with BPH, these BPH-resistant lines exhibit sterile characteristics, displaying panicle enclosure and failure of seed production at their mature stage. As we suspected, BPH-mediated viral infections could cause the observed sterile symptoms, and we characterized rice-infecti

Honeydew is abundant in many ecosystems and may provide an alternative food source (a buffer) for pollinators during periods of food shortage, but the impact of honeydew on pollination systems has received little attention to date. In New Zealand, kānuka trees (Myrtaceae: Kunzea ericoides (A. Rich) Joy Thompson) are often heavily infested by the endemic honeydew-producing scale insect Coelostomidia wairoensis (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Coelostomidiidae) and the period of high honeydew production can overlap with kānuka flowering. In this study, we quantified the sugar resources (honeydew and nectar

Total and methyl mercury concentrations of cicada bodies, wings, and exuviae were investigated to study the mercury distribution characteristics. Results indicated that total and methyl mercury concentrations of cicada bodies were 2.64 mg/kg and 123.93 ng/g on average, respectively. In cicada tissues, total mercury concentrations were found to increase in the order of exuviae (0.50 mg/kg on average) < wings (0.98 mg/kg on average) < cicada bodies (2.64 mg/kg on average) and methyl mercury concentrations of cicada bodies were 123.93 ng/g on average and were the highest. Methyl mercury concentra

Essential oils from the heartwood and leaves of specimens of Vanillosmopsis pohlii collected in two different localities were analyzed by GC-MS. The major constituent of both heartwood essential oils was the sesquiterpene alpha-bisabolol. Essential oil composition from leaves was quite different for two specimens and showed beta-pinene and E-caryophyllene as principal constituents. The essential oil of heartwood and the pure sesquiterpene alpha-bisabolol were tested against Bemisia argentifolii, the white fly fruit plague, and pronounced insecticidal effects were observed.

A second virus with distinct biological, serological, and physiochemical properties was detected as a minority viral subpopulation in specimens of Cliff Swallow nest bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) and nestling bird sera containing Fort Morgan (FM) virus. The second virus, detected by a breakthrough neutralization test employing FM antiserum, was present in 5 of 11 FM virus-positive pools of nest bugs and in 4 of 38 birds from Colorado and South Dakota. The concentration of the second virus was 10-fold to 1,000-fold lower than that of FM virus. The second virus, which was provisionally named "Bijou B

The white peach scale, Pseudaulacaspis pentagona (Targioni-Tozzetti) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), is a highly polyphagous insect pest of global phytosanitary relevance affecting fruit trees, perennial crops, and ornamental plants in temperate and subtropical regions. Its invasive success is largely driven by high thermal tolerance, a wide host range, and strong survival capacity under postharvest handling and cold-chain storage, which greatly enhances its potential for long-distance dispersal through international trade of fresh fruit and plant material. A systematic review and meta-synthesis of

Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff, a predatory stinkbug, has garnered much attention as a biological control against Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera pests across various crops. The continuous and high-quality supply of prey is essential for its large scale rearing and commercialization. This study investigated the life history and population performance of E. furcellata fed on Lepidoptera prey, Bombyx mori larvae or on Coleoptera prey, Tenebrio molitor larvae under controlled conditions. Using age-stage two-sex life table methodology, we evaluated key developmental parameters and population

Kissing bugs are the primary vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Kissing bugs are exposed to thermal variability, including short periods of heat stress, which can induce mortality or exert sublethal effects. This study investigated Rhodnius prolixus Stål (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) following brief periods of high thermal stress with respect to survival, blood feeding, developmental processes, and T. cruzi infection, with a focus on sublethal effects. Our results demonstrated a significant decrease in survival for R. prolixus at 42 °C for 8 h. When exposed to sub-l

Light trapping is a common monitoring and control method for Empoasca onukii Matsuda (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), a major pest in tea gardens. However, in late autumn (late October), despite large populations of leafhoppers in tea gardens around 30°N latitude, the effectiveness of light trapping declines sharply. The factors causing this decline are unclear. In this study, field experiments revealed significant differences in ambient temperature and photoperiod corresponding to variation in light trapping effectiveness across different leafhopper peaks. Through a series of bioassays, we found th

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. This study aimed to assess the diversity of triatomines collected in 2023 from various regions of the State of Sonora, in Northwestern Mexico, from both wild (mainly rodent nests) and urban sites. Overall, 75 wild nests were dissected, with 36 % (27/75) positive for triatomines. A total of 180 triatomine specimens were collected, including 170 collected in wild nests, and ten collected in human dwellings. Identification was performed using taxonomic keys (for adults only) a

In recent decades, the world has witnessed a remarkable resurgence of bedbugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Although populations of the common bedbug, Cimex lectularius L., expanded in temperate regions of its original distribution, the tropical bedbug, C. hemipterus (F.), increased its abundance in warmer regions, where it also had been historically distributed. However, C. hemipterus has recently been observed to be expanding to other areas, e.g. North Australia, Middle East, the United States and Russia. In other parts of Europe, few sporadic and ephemeral introductions of C. hemipterus were reco

Little is known about how the virulence of a human pathogen varies in the environment it shares with its vector. This study focused on whether the virulence of Trypanosoma cruzi (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae), the causal agent of Chagas' disease, is related to altitude. Accordingly, Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) specimens were collected at three different altitudes (300, 700 and 1400 m a.s.l.) in Chiapas, Mexico. The parasite was then isolated to infect uninfected T. dimidiata from the same altitudes, as well as female CD-1 mice. The response variables were phenoloxidase (PO)

Responses of the tea mosquito, Helopeltis theivora (Waterhouse) (Hemiptera: Miridae), a major pest of tea, to female sex pheromone compounds were measured using wind tunnel and electroantennogram (EAG) bioassays. In the wind tunnel, male tea mosquitoes were found to be most attracted to a dichloromethane extract of the female thorax. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of female thoracic extracts and dynamic head space samples of virgin females showed the presence of five compounds: (Z)-3 hexenyl acetate, (Z)-3 hexenyl butanoate, (E)-2 hexenyl pentanoate, 2,4 dimethyl pentana

There are many invasive alien insect species, several of these species can affect human health by causing disease. These include vectors of vector-borne diseases, such as the triatomines that transmit Chagas disease. Triatoma longipennis Usinger (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is one of the most epidemiologically important vector species of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) in Mexico. This study reports the third collection of T. longipennis from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, where the prevalence of T. cruzi infection in humans has historically exceeded 3.38%. This study eva

Larvae of some leaf beetles carry masses of feces covering parts or all of the body, which is called a "fecal shield". In general, the shield is thought to be a defense structure against natural enemies. However, some studies have suggested that defense effectiveness varies depending on the natural enemy. In this study, we used a fecal retention leaf beetle Ophrida xanthospilota (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and 2 local generalist predators (an ant, Camponotus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and a stinkbug, Arma custos [Hemiptera: Pentatomidae]) as a system to test the hypothesis that the f

Defensins are one of the major families of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are widely distributed in insects. In Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi the causative agent of Chagas disease, two large groups of defensin isoforms have been described: type 1 and type 4. The aim of this study was to analyze the trypanocidal activity of a type 1 recombinant defensin (rDef1.3) identified in Triatoma (Meccus) pallidipennis, an endemic specie from México. The trypanocidal activity of this defensin was evaluated in vitro, against the parasites T. cruzi, T. rangeli, and two

The family Pentatomidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) includes several invasive stink bug species capable to attack a large number of wild and cultivated plants, causing several damages to different crops. Pentatomids rely on obligate symbiotic associations with bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae, mainly of the genus Pantoea. A distinctive trait of these associations is the transmission route: during oviposition, females smear egg masses with symbiont-containing secretions, which are ingested by newly hatched nymphs, allowing the symbiont to pass through their digestive tract and establish i

Cassava mosaic disease (CMD), caused by the cassava mosaic virus (CMV) and transmitted primarily by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, reflects the most severe and widespread viral threat to cassava cultivation. The emergence of CMD with a nonlinear saturated incidence of Holling type II form is stochastically modeled and analyzed in this paper utilizing the continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) modeling approach. The most significant distinction between deterministic and stochastic models is that the deterministic model predicts disease persistence when the basic reproduction number R 0 > 1 , where

The brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens, a major rice pest, threatens global food security through rapid reproduction. This study investigates the role of the tramtrack (ttk) gene in male reproductive development and spermatogenesis using RNA interference (RNAi). Gene expression analysis revealed higher ttk levels in testes. RNAi-mediated knockdown of ttk in fourth-instar male nymphs reduced its expression by up to 80%, leading to severely impaired gonad development. Testes, vas deferens, and accessory glands in treated males exhibited 8-89% volume reductions compared to controls, accompanied
