Evaluation of severe reactions to sweat bee stings.

Thirteen patients with severe reactions to sweat bee stings were evaluated. Eleven patients had had systemic reactions and two, large local reactions. Skin testing and RAST with venom of other Hymenoptera and whole body extract of sweat bees disclosed negative reactions to both skin tests and RAST of all other insects tested in eight, while three showed sensitivity to honey bee. Only one patient had a positive RAST reaction to whole body extract of sweat bee. Whole body extract of sweat bee causes some irritant reaction when skin testing controls and is not a reliable diagnostic agent even tho

Effects of Spinosad, Imidacloprid, and Lambda-cyhalothrin on Survival, Parasitism, and Reproduction of the Aphid Parasitoid Aphidius colemani.

Insecticides can affect biological control by parasitoids. Here, we examined the lethal and sublethal effects of two conventional insecticides, imidacloprid and lambda-cyhalothrin, and a reduced-risk bioinsecticide, spinosad, on the aphid parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Concentration-mortality curves generated from insecticide residue bioassays found that wasps were nearly 20-fold more susceptible to spinosad than imidacloprid and lambda-cyhalothrin. Imidacloprid and lambda-cyhalothrin compromised adult parasitoid longevity, but not as dramatically as spinosad:

Impact of age and heterophilic interference on the basal serum tryptase, a risk indication for anaphylaxis, in 1,092 dermatology patients.

A raised baseline serum tryptase is a risk indicator for anaphylactic reactions, especially in patients with hymenoptera venom allergy. Borderline elevations (> 11.4 μg/l) occur frequently and may necessitate invasive diagnostic procedures to rule out systemic mastocytosis. We retrospectively analysed 1,092 non-mastocytotic patients from our general dermatology clinic with respect to age- and gender-associated effects and investigated the impact of heterophilic antibody interference on the tryptase assay. The results were stratified by gender and five age classes. Sera with raised tryptase (n

Venom immunotherapy: comparison of "rush" vs "conventional" schedules.

Twenty-three patients aged five to 52 years with good clinical histories of severe systemic reactions to hymenoptera stings confirmed by skin tests and RAST levels were treated with specific insect venoms. A more conventional, slow, bi-weekly schedule was used to determine whether they could be as successfully treated as those in earlier studies employing the "Rush desensitization" approach. It was also hoped these subjects would experience fewer untoward reactions. Comparisons of IgG (anti-hyaluronidase and phospholipase) levels pretreatment and after top dose (100 mcg) in all cases showed gr

Conserved and Unique Protein Expression Patterns Across Reproductive Stage Transitions in Social Hymenopteran Queens.

Hymenopteran queens are collectively highly fecund, often long-lived individuals that undergo dramatic physiological changes after they mate and establish a nest. However, the degree to which these changes are conserved among species with different life histories is not well-defined. We conducted a comparative proteomic study investigating differences between reproductive stages (virgin, mated and established queens) of Apis mellifera, Bombus impatiens, B. terrestris and Lasius niger. We analysed haemolymph for all species except L. niger, for which a whole-body analysis was performed due to t

Low Frequency of IgE-Mediated Food Hypersensitivity in Mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mastocytosis have an increased risk for severe anaphylaxis, particularly to Hymenoptera venoms. These patients may also develop more often systemic hypersensitivity reactions to certain foods. However, this issue has not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence and severity of food hypersensitivity (FH) reactions among patients with clonal mast cell disorders (CMDs). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 204 (age ≥18 years) consecutive patients who presented with confirmed CMD (170 with mastocytosis and 34 with monoclonal mas

Feeding behavior modulation in the leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii): effects of noxious versus innocuous prey.

Feeding, a fundamentally rhythmic behavior in many animals, is expected to exhibit modulation with respect to prey type. Using high-speed videography (200 frames(-1)) and kinematic analysis, we investigated prey-processing behavior in the long-nosed leopard lizard (Gambelia wislizenii). The effects of two prey types were examined, innocuous immature crickets (Acheta domesticus) and noxious stinging hymenopterans (honeybees [Apis mellifer] and yellow jackets [Vespula sp.]). Stinging hymenopterans are processed more extensively, with higher gape-cycling frequencies, and for a greater duration th

Interference with sawfly (Arge pullata) poisoning in Fasciola hepatica-infected lambs.

Lambs harbouring an 8-week-old infection with Fasciola hepatica, together with fluke-free animals, were dosed orally with 2 g per kg body weight of sawfly larvae (Arge pullata). Fluke-free, non-dosed lambs and lambs infected only with F. hepatica served as controls. Clinico-pathological observations on sawfly-dosed, fluke-free lambs revealed the characteristic picture of sawfly poisoning. Four of six animals had to be killed in extremis. In contrast, sawfly-dosed, fluke-infected lambs exhibited only moderate clinico-pathological signs of sawfly poisoning and no deaths occurred. A reduction in

Pesticide selectivity to the parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum: A pattern 10-year database and its implications for Integrated Pest Management.

Trichogramma pretiosum is one of the main egg parasitoids used in the control of lepidopteran pests in Brazil. This natural enemy can be negatively affected by the use of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The present work used a systematic review and meta-analysis to group information from multiple studies on the selectivity of pesticides (279 commercial products) in rice, corn, soybean, apple and peach crops for immature stages (egg-larva, pre-pupa, and pupa) and adult parasitoids. The selected studies used the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control (IOBC) me

Rush Venom Immunotherapy in Children.

BACKGROUND: Rush venom immunotherapy (VIT) is highly effective in Hymenoptera venom allergy. Still, specific data regarding its safety and efficiency in children are rather sparse. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to better evaluate the safety and efficiency of rush VIT in this specific age group. METHODS: Children younger than 16 years with systemic reaction to insect sting involving, at least, one body system other than skin and children aged 16-18 years with any kind of systemic reaction were offered conventional or rush VIT with a build-up phase that lasted 3 days. Tropical dermatology: Venomous arthropods and human skin: Part I. Insecta.

Although many tropical insects carry infectious diseases, cutaneous injury can occur by other mechanisms, for example erucism (envenomation by caterpillars) or lepidopterism (dermatitis from moths). Pararama is a unique form of erucism seen in workers in contact with rubber trees in the Amazon, and it is caused by Premolis larvae, resulting in progressive periarticular fibrosis, ankylosis, and the loss of articulation. Ants and aquatic insects of the Belostomatidae family can cause painful bites and stings. Anaphylactic shock and death can result from the venom of bees and wasps. Beetles can c

Methyl 6-methylsalicylate: a female-produced pheromone component of the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius.

Sex-pheromone-related behavior and chemistry were studied in the wasp Spalangia endius Walker (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), a pupal parasitoid of the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). Males responded behaviorally to female extracts by arrestment, whereas females did not arrest to male extracts. In a comparison of male and female extracts by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), two female-specific compounds were found. One was identified as methyl 6-methylsalicylate (gas chromatographic retention time and mass spectrum versus an authentic standard), but the chemical str

Time allocation of a parasitoid foraging in heterogeneous vegetation: implications for host-parasitoid interactions.

1. Changing plant composition in a community can have profound consequences for herbivore and parasitoid population dynamics. To understand such effects, studies are needed that unravel the underlying behavioural decisions determining the responses of parasitoids to complex habitats. 2. The searching behaviour of the parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum was followed in environments with different plant species composition. In the middle of these environments, two Brassica oleracea plants infested by the host Plutella xylostella were placed. The control set-up contained B. oleracea plants only. In t

Variation in plant volatiles and attraction of the parasitoid Diadegma semiclausum (Hellén).

Differences in allelochemistry of plants may influence their ability to attract parasitoids. We studied responses of Diadegma semiclausum (Hellén), a parasitoid of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.), to inter- and intraspecific variation in odor blends of crucifers and a non-crucifer species. Uninfested Brussels sprout (Brassica oleracea L. gemmifera), white mustard (Sinapis alba L.), a feral Brassica oleracea, and malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were compared for their attractivity to D. semiclausum in a Y-tube bioassay. Odors from all plants were more attractive to the parasit

Fatal Anaphylaxis Following Multiple Hornet Stings: A Case Report.

Fatal anaphylaxis caused by stings from Hymenoptera insects remains challenging to diagnose postmortem owing to the lack of specific pathologic findings and the influence of postmortem changes on biochemical markers. Herein, we report a rare forensic case involving a 79-year-old woman who was found deceased with numerous hornet stings. Autopsy revealed severe laryngeal edema with substantial narrowing of the airway and extensive subcutaneous hemorrhage at the sting site. Postmortem femoral blood analysis revealed markedly elevated tryptase and histamine levels, indicating mast cell degranulati

The regulatory role of m6A RNA methylation in insect sexual development: a review.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent internal mRNA modification in eukaryotes and serves as a key post-transcriptional regulator in insect development. This review synthesizes current knowledge on m6A in insect sexual development, beginning with its well-established role in Drosophila melanogaster, where it ensures female fate by promoting the female-specific splicing of the master switch gene Sex-lethal (Sxl). Notably, classical female-lethal genes such as Fl(2)d and Virilizer are now recognized as essential regulatory subunits of the m6A methyltransferase complex, linking classic g

The bioprospecting potential of insect venoms as antibiotics: a mini review.

The global rise of antimicrobial resistance has intensified the search for new antibiotic candidates from unconventional biological sources. Insect venoms, although underexplored compared to other venomous taxa, harbor a chemically diverse array of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with significant therapeutic promises. This mini review synthesizes evidence from 15 original studies published over the past 15 years that examined the antimicrobial potential of insect venom components. Most investigations have focused on Hymenoptera-wasps, bees, and ants-where peptides such as mastoparans, polydim-I,

Visualising fat reserves in an insect: A method using X-ray micro-computerised tomography of the Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris).

The Common Wasp, Vespula vulgaris (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), has an annual nest cycle with new colonies initiated by over-wintered queens. Survival of adult queen wasps through winter dormancy is enabled through the deposition of substantial quantities of triglycerides in fat bodies. Worker (and male) wasps lack these fat reserves. By comparing micro-CT scans of workers, pre-hibernation queens and post-hibernation queens, we demonstrate that it is possible to semi-quantitatively measure fat reserves using arbitrary X-ray attenuation ranges. Venom in the venom gland of the queen wasps, has a sign

Venom allergen immunotherapy.

Venom immunotherapy (VIT) with Hymenoptera venom extracts is highly effective in preventing large local, systemic allergic, and anaphylactic reactions to insect stings. VIT is not required for patients with cutaneous systemic or large local allergic reactions to stings because it is uncommon for reactions to become more severe. The clinical history, with confirmatory skin or serum tests for venom IgE, can clarify the risk for future anaphylaxis and the need for VIT. For initial treatment, rush regimens are recommended because they have the same or less risk of systemic reactions than slower tr
