Mastitis is an important disease for the dairy industry worldwide, causing economic losses and reducing milk quality and production. Staphylococcus aureus is a worldwide agent of this intramammary infection, which also causes foodborne diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates in milk of mastitis cows in Brazil and to analyze the genetic lineages and the content of antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors among these isolates. Fifty-six MSSA isolates were recovered from 1,484 milk samples (p

BACKGROUND: Endocarditis has been associated with lower mortality and fewer complications among injection drug users (IDUs) than nonaddicts in Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB). The better prognosis of IDUs has not been clarified but it has generally been explained by younger age and other host factors. In this study, bacterial strains, their virulence factors, and host immune responses were compared among IDUs and nonaddicts with SAB, including those with and without endocarditis.
METHODS: A total of 430 consecutive adult patients with methicillin-sensitive SAB were followed prospectiv

There is significant evidence that the etiology of chronic otorhinolaryngology infections such as chronic rhinosinusitis, adenotonsillitis, and otitis media depends on biofilms. As biofilm-forming bacteria can be resistant to the immune system, antibiotics, and other treatments, biofilm infections are often chronic. To identify the genus and species of the clinical isolates obtained from the swabs collected from the patients with chronic infections of the nasal and paranasal sinus, nasopharynx, and oropharynx and to evaluate phenotypic and genotypic methods for the detection of biofilms and an

We evaluated the incidence and risk factors of Staphylococcus aureus colonisation in 300 treatment-naïve HIV patients. Swabs from anterior nares and pharynx were cultured. Eighty-eight patients (29.3%) were colonised with S. aureus (47.7% nasal, 23.8% pharyngeal and 28.5% at both sites), which yielded 112 isolates. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus was detected in 25.9% (29/112) of isolates. Panton-Valentine leucocidin gene was present in 18.8% (21/112) of isolates. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified CD4 count <200 cells/mm3, public bath use, alcohol intake and other sexually trans

INTRODUCTION: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a human pathogen of global public health importance. A key element of MRSA decolonization strategies is the administration of mupirocin, an antibiotic also used to treat superficial skin infections. However, the emergence and global increase of mupirocin-resistant (mupR)-MRSA highlight the need for active surveillance to support evidence-based MRSA control measures. This study investigated the antibiotic resistance, genetic diversity, and plasmid profiles of mupR-MRSA from Germany and South Africa.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important public health hazard at the human-food-environment interface. Poultry meat has been increasingly implicated as a potential source of MRSA exposure, yet molecular data from the Middle East remain scarce. This study aimed to characterize MRSA isolated from retail chicken meat in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using a DNA microarray platform and to compare these profiles with recent UAE clinical MRSA data. A total of 34 non-duplicate MRSA isolates recovered from retail chicken meat were analyzed using a high-resolution DNA microar

BACKGROUND: Nasal carriage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is associated with an increased risk of infection. Colonization with MRSA is observed in < 1% of the general Dutch population. Increased risk for MRSA carriage is known to occur in several key groups, one of which is asylum seekers. However, little is known about MRSA carriage among undocumented migrants and uninsured legal residents. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of nasal MRSA carriage among these groups in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, between October 2018 an

A better understanding of virulence gene profiling and molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus isolates associated with bloodstream infection (BSI) may provide further insights related to clinical outcomes with these infections. We analyzed 89 S. aureus isolates including 37 MRSA isolates (41.6%) recovered from 89 adult patients with BSI from 4 hospitals in Zhejiang province, eastern China. Thirty-five (94.6%) of MRSA isolates and 4 (7.7%) of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates were resistant to multiple antimicrobials. All isolates harbored at least 2 of 22 possible vi

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to reveal reservoirs potentially leading to Staphylococcus aureus infections in haemodialysis clinic clients in the tropical north of the Australian Northern Territory (NT). This client population are primarily Aboriginal Australians who have a greater burden of ill health than other Australians. Reservoir identification will enhance infection control in this client group, including informing potential S. aureus decolonisation strategies.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: The study participants were 83 clients of four haemodialysis clinics in the Darwin region of the N
