Patients using chiropractors in North America: who are they, and why are they in chiropractic care?

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA AND OBJECTIVES: Alternative health care was used by an estimated 42% of the U.S. population in 1997, and chiropractors accounted for 31% of the total estimated number of visits. Despite this high level of use, there is little empirical information about who uses chiropractic care or why. METHODS: The authors surveyed randomly sampled chiropractors (n = 131) at six study sites and systematically sampled chiropractic patients seeking care from participating chiropractors on 1 day (n = 1275). Surveys collected data about the patient's reason for seeking chiropractic ca

Ultrasound measurements of lumbar spinous process movement during flexion distraction manipulation: a preliminary descriptive cross-sectional study with healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain is a prevalent condition that impairs productivity and quality of life. While spinal manipulative therapy reduces pain and disability, the biomechanical mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. This study utilized diagnostic ultrasound to measure lumbo-sacral spinous process movement (L3-S1) during Cox® Flexion Distraction manipulation, Protocol I, providing insight into spinal intersegmental motion. METHODS: This study analyzed a convenience sample of generally healthy participants, aged 21 years and older, from both sexes and various ethnicities

Baseline individual factors associated with clinical outcomes in adults with non-specific low back pain following manual therapy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Primary care providers consider the identification of patient subgroups as a high research priority. Unfortunately, evidence to support the benefit of treatments targeting subgroups of patients with NSLBP remains inconsistent. Specifically, little is known about baseline individual patient characteristics associated with optimal clinical improvement from manual therapy. This systematic review aims to identify baseline individual factors (BIFs), including patient characteristics, self-reported questionnaires, clinical examination, and ancillary test factors associated with clinical

Resolution of Cervicogenic Dizziness, Syncope, and Neck Pain Following Restoration of Cervical Lordosis Using Chiropractic BioPhysics® Orthopedic Rehabilitation: A Case Report With One-Year Follow-Up.

We report improvements in debilitating cervicogenic dizziness (CD), as well as neck pain and upper and lower back pain, using Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®) orthopedic rehabilitation with a one-year follow-up. CD is extremely debilitating and strongly impacts health outcomes. Reports of successful conservative treatments for CD combined with neck and spine pain with improved outcomes and sustained long-term results are rare, and this study adds to the literature. A 29-year-old female suffered from sudden-onset dizziness and frequent syncope elicited by cranio-cervical extension motions. The p

No increased risk of spinal cerebrospinal fluid leak after spinal manipulative therapy: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, a rare but debilitating condition, have been described following spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) in case reports. However, the nature of the potential association between SMT and CSF leak is uncertain, and symptoms such as neck pain or headache may reflect preexisting leaks rather than effects of SMT. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis of no significant association between SMT and spinal CSF leak, comparing chiropractic SMT recipients to matched controls undergoing physical therapist-supervised therapeutic exercises (PTE). METHODS: We sear

Recovery of reversed basilar artery flow as seen by transcranial sonography and MRA source images for vertebral dissection.

The dissection of the intracranial vertebral artery (VAD) is a common cause of young age brain stem stroke. VAD can be detected by conventional angiography, but there is yet no agreement on the most effective tool to use for the detection of VAD. Here, we report a patient with VAD, who was diagnosed with an intimal flap within the left vertebral artery by the magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) source images. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) showed a reversed flow in the basilar artery. After 4 months, TCD and transcranial color-coded Doppler (TCCD) confirmed a normal anterograde flow of the verteb
